Apparently while we were off playing this past weekend a handful of our favorite talk radio hosts were working hard to come up with a strategy to defeat progressives in Congress who are hell bent on managing political speech and killing right talk radio. Having discovered that the American people do not support a revival of the Fairness Doctrine,
disgruntled lefties in Congress are looking for a more covert way to silence right talkers. Senator Dick Durban (D. IL) has discovered just the way to do it too. His amendment to the D. C. Voting Rights Bill requires the FCC to “encourage and promote diversity in … media ownership” and reaffirm FCC authority to mandate the presentation of opposing points of view on issues of public importance.”
How does this translate in practice? It means that KPAY, for instance, will have to answer to a local board that will have the power to decide whether KPAY has been fair enough in its programming. ** In February, the FCC floated several proposals to require stations to better serve local communities, including establishing community advisory boards to consult stations on programming. *** “We are materially increasing our commitment to community programming, increasing our accountability and broadening our public-service contributions in every local market we serve,” said John Hogan, president and chief executive officer of Clear Channel. “We believe when radio focuses on servicing local communities, it is radio at its finest.” **
Just because someone believes it would translate to “radio at its finest” doesn’t mean that it will. Radio will suffer poor ratings for many hours of radio time. Power and control will rest in the hands of a few appointed officials instead of the people through the free market. Unable to compete in thsi market and disatisfied with the coverage the MSM assures them, the political left Democrats are resorting to strong arm tactics. this is a party that loves to exercise power over the people. When this abridgement to free speech and free markets happens get ready for boring radio. Better yetget fired up and Tea Party like its 1773.
