The Charitable Heart

Creative enterprise and a charitable heart come together in America to make miracles happen. This is one of those great American stories…

“Former Miami Dolphin Twan Russell leaving a lasting fingerprint,” by Dan Le Batard – Miami Herald

There was the time, for example, that Russell was running through a football obstacle course with a disabled child who could barely lift his arms. The wheelchair grazed tackling dummies and weaved around cones, and the child kept laughing with uncommon delight. The boy, at one point, started barking. Russell was surprised when a woman rushed up to him then with tears in her eyes. He got scared. He thought maybe a child at camp had been injured. ** “No,” the woman said through sobs. “You don’t understand what you just did. That boy hasn’t made a sound in 10 years.”

Liberty is a space of possibility. In America it exists, or should, within a supportive structure containing limited restraints. Within this space we can choose to rise above our circumstances, think and act beyond our own limitations or successes, and contribute mightily. But we must both teach and preserve these things. How we think determines how we will live.

Unfortunately it has become a challenge to pass on freedom’s legacy. Freedom requires individual responsibility, creativity and effort and it requires an independent spirit if it is to be sustained. Dedication and intention to make oneself a contributing member of society is vital to free societies. Remaining free is hard work but the rewards and satisfaction are great as Twan Russel, his dedicated mother and the Miami dolphins exemplify.

A legacy worth passing on is one of successful independent citizens with great big charitable hearts. It’s time to inspire all of our people to become the source of such miracles and to know how blessed we are in our freedom!
