H1N1 – A National Emergency?

The latest news is that Obama has declared the swine flu epidemic a national emergency:

President Obama signed a proclamation declaring the H1N1 influenza a national emergency, giving doctors and medical facilities greater leeway in responding to the flu pandemic. Obama signed the declaration late Friday, which the White House said allows medical treatment facilities to better handle a surge in flu patients by waiving federal requirements on a case-by-case basis. – FOX news

I don’t know how that changes things. It does not increase the availablity of vaccines. My question is whether this is really such an emergency? We have seen example after example of “emergencies” that merely force legislation and new programs that somehow benefit Obama’s friends and campaign donors. Cash for clunkers, cap and trade, health care, stimulus bill, and so on. I don’t see how the swine flu scam does that, but I am skeptical.

So far, at last count, there have been 133 deaths in the USA attributed to the swine flu. That is not good, of course, but in relative terms it is very minor. More teenage girls than that have been murdered by their fathers in honor killings for not obeying the Koran. More people than that are killed every week in Chicago by gangbangers. Many more die when they go to hospitals for other problems, but the doctors don’t wash their hands. The last number I saw was over 90,000 deaths due to infections contracted in the hospital. Many more such comparisons could be made, but my question is, what is the emergency?
