The GOP in Congress is wondering why President Obama is continuing to endorse the Home Loan Modification Program. Since its inception two years ago the incompetence of the people running it has created a hopeless quagmire of red tape. It’s been an utter failure of government bureaucracy and it’s simply not helped enough people.
Desperate homeowners agree and say when they try to apply for a modification they get shuffled from person to another and it takes several hours for their initial contact to obtain the forms.
The applicants complain they are faxing in all the required documents in a timely manner, but somehow they’re being lost on the other end. And it gets worse, whatever the last action was comes up on a computer scene entered by the last person they talked too, this is often completely wrong and so they have to restate all the previous information to newest contact. If they have the stamina to stick around by the fourth or fifth follow up and after weeks and months of delays and many more hours of dealing with the program by phone, they are too often told they have been declined for a loan because something wasn’t faxed in on time.
After two years $38 billion dollars still sits in banks across America that was supposed to go to help homeowners nearing foreclosure.
The GOP wonders why have the program if they are not going to use the money to help the people it was intended for?
The Democrats have responded by saying thousands of homes have been saved by this program, but in truth this is just a fraction the amount that is out there. As for the banks, well they seem pretty content to keep those billions in their vaults rather than to cooperate in refinancing.

I was talking to my business attorney about this stuff. It’s still a bit over my head, but I think it’s ridiculous that we keep supporting these programs.
