You got it half right. The truth is it sucks to be a part of either party. Each party is guilty of taking issues that needs to be addressed, running them through the political process where the issue gets puked on by politicians, and then putting their spin machine to work to justify the bastardized version of their version of the “fix”. Examples: The left knows we need to help the poor but the political process doesn’t take into account the simple concept that “compassion without accountability is enabling”. The right knows we need to keep terrorism from coming into our country but doesn’t understand that when we kill innocent people in other countries “fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here”, we create more terrorist’s. The left knows that union and government jobs are the back bone of the middle class but doesn’t realize that when their annual salaries and pension packages are more than triple that of the “average” private sector working wage, it is not sustainable. Union jobs end up going over seas and tax payers keep paying more to sustain the government workers benefit packages. The right knows that our escalating debt is unsustainable and believes that rather than raise taxes we need to cut spending but they go after seniors, the poor, and education and rarely talk about going after corporate or agriculture subsidies or the ridiculous amounts we spend on the military. The left understands that we need to do something about immigration but won’t do anything that might upset a large part of their voting base. The right wants government out of our lives except in the areas where our freedoms challenge their personal and religious values, then they want the government to make more laws restricting those freedoms. It all sucks.
The magnificent Joe Shaw deigns to drop by to tell Post Scripts and their readers how it is. All bow and continue to ignore his blog.
And bingo! I am once again reminded why I quit responding to this blog a while back. If the purpose of PS and it’s readers is to debate and share ideas, why do you guys put up with this guy (David Walton as I remember?) who likes to insult all those whom he disagrees with, and then through his own naivete’, mistakes his insults as “calling liberals on their crap”? He’s a conversation killer. Why don’t you take apart my points David? Why do you have to go straight to insults? I don’t think you lack the intelligence because I have read your letters to the editor and the big words you like to use tells me you are at least good with the Thesaurus. So why don’t you get out your Thesaurus and tell me like a big person why I’m wrong instead of employing your 7th grade attempts at putting me down? Here’s where I stand….If in the future you can respectfully tell me why you disagree with anything I say, I will offer the same courtesy to you. But if you want to insult me, that’s fine, I’ll respectfully quit responding to PS again and leave you guys to preaching to the choir except for the 2 or 3 liberals who don’t seem to have a problem putting up with your crap. Up to you.
Joe: “The right knows we need to keep terrorism from coming into our country but doesn’t understand that when we kill innocent people in other countries “fighting them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here”, we create more terrorist’s.”
So it’s your opinion that our troops fighting and dying to make innocent people safe and free isn’t appreciated by any of the people in the ME? You are wrong my friend!
And you think that the (regrettable) collateral damage that always accompanies war is more compelling for new jihadist recruits than the constant barrage of extremist ideology preached to them from birth on a regular basis? I’d say your assessment has a big hole in it.
You have managed to swallow whole the lefty notion that the people in the ME are all the same and none want to live in peace if it means “others” come to the rescue…especially the so-called “imperialistic” American. Sad! It may suprise you but there are a lot of people over there who are tired of the radicals and their influence and radicalism who would like to join the rest of us in the current century…and they welcome (smart) intervention and assistance from liberators from America! Were it not for the constant, nearly eight year drum beat of derision and disdain during the Iraq war, which magically disappeared when Obama took the helm, a lot of that negative opinion would simply not exist.
“…but they go after seniors, the poor, and education”
A damn lie! A damn lie constructed and perpetrated by Saul Alinsky radicals who themselves use seniors, the poor, and education as cash cows and to garner power! They are willing to frighten black people and seniors into thinking fellow Americans would actually take steps to hurt them…pathetic!
Big education has invested more dollars into the Democrat coffers than any other entity…think about that and our now much lower standing in education in the world and find a way to justify it or their lies about the Republican views on the poor, seniors and education!
“…then they want the government to make more laws restricting those freedoms.”
Like what?
Laws that protect life? That would simply represent a return to the values that protect your own right to life! In truth most people on the right would prefer that Americans chose to protect the unborn on their own as a matter of conscience, because we do value freedom. But when our society seems to have forgotten it’s promise that, if granted abortion rights, abortions would be rare; and when abortion clinics like that of Mr. Gosnell make grizzly headlines; and when the people begin to defend partial birth abortion and taking young girls to abortion clinics without telling their parents, then maybe, just maybe, it is time to take a look at the direction we are going to see if there aren’t some limits we should put on abortion. A nation without such limits has a good chance to resort to barbarism within a few generations. Civility and morality is not genetic, it must be taught and lived! (Ditto on the marriage issue; time for the GLBT community to do some compromising of their own for the sake of civility)
How about weed? Well we have an experiment going on in Colorado right now. Do you think it might be a good idea to see how things go there before we plunge head long into federally legalizing yet another recreational drug that is arguably quite dangerous to the health? At a time when the left has been pushing against salt, fat, sugar and tobacco based on health concerns it might be smart to go slow on this one.
Conservatives and Republicans are looking for reasonable solutions and honest conversations to address the problems we face. We want economic and social policy that supports the most people possible in being able to care for and support themselves. We want an economy that gives everyone a better chance to create their own nest eggs and futures. We want education that puts our kids…all of them…at the top internationally so they will be able to compete in an expanding arena. We want immigration reform that encourages people to adhere to our laws. We believe that tolerance by everyone expressed in a live and let live context would better serve the people. We want a smaller, less powerful and intrusive federal government…after the IRS and NSA abuses and after billions being wasted to give us a measly 1% to 2% growth, and after poverty and unemployment levels that rival the Great Depression it’s not a bad idea. What’s not to like?
Education has been a failure. Not coincidentally, the administration of our education system has been greatly influenced and controlled by progressive radicals over the last thirty to forty years. Duh! We do not attack education…we abhor the loss the broken system means in terms of real education for our children!
We do “go after” corporatism…we hate it! We also defend against specious blanket claims that corporations are inherently evil or covetous and envious claims that people shouldn’t be allowed to make a lot of money.
The current administration has overseen an expansion in poverty not seen since the great depression. The differences in approach by the two major parties could not be more evident and the consequences to our entire nation more dire.
Republicans don’t have all of the answers. Compromise is an inevitable reality in politics and law making. What we can’t abide is radical left governance that has/will throw this nation into permanent poverty and despair for all but the elite.
The personal religious values that were at the foundation of this nation are the same values to put the guarantees of individual freedom and rights into our Constitution. The people managed to live side by side with others who did not share those values for a couple of hundred years without major troubles. It is the activism and assault on these values that are creating division and strife.
Open your eyes and your mind, Joe; sitting on the fence like that is bound to give you a rash.
Gee whiz, Joe really told me off. I wonder if his blog is getting a few more hits now.
There is no reason whatsoever that I should respond to Joe’s pronouncements, they speak for themselves as constructions weaved from stereotypes, prejudices, and self-aggrandizement.
That is pure Joe Shaw.
Re #4 Tina : Will someone please explain to me what “corporatism” is and why it is always used as a pejorative?
Pie in America we substitute the word corporatism for crony capitalism. Unions, and particularly education unions have become corporatist in our politics.
See a good general explanation here. It should give you an idea how far afield of our founders intent it is.
The relevant question may be, “Do we care?”
The relevant answer is “Who gives a f***.”
Remarks spoken in 1975 by John Wayne about liberalism could have been said yesterday. Content warning: A bit of salty language.
