The Code Pink banner read, No Military Predators in Our Town!
A few dozen un-Americans, mostly women in pink, camped near the Marine Recruiters and sang old hippy peace songs, but they were shouted down and jeered at by a much larger crowd of Americans who supported the Marines. The Code Pink fiasco in Berkeley and the harsh statements by the Mayor now has the City Council backing down and the Mayor publically apologizing to Marine Corp. A rally for the Marines was set for Tuesday and I have a call in to the organizers to see if it will continue.
What sparked the sudden about face? $2.3 million in pork spending was destined for Berkeley, but that pork was threatened to be stopped by 6 Republican Senators who were going to draft legislation to stop federal funds from reaching this liberal city. Of course rabid left-wingers like Congresswoman Barbara Lee-D and Senator Barbara Boxer-D vowed to fight such a bill. To them pork is their life’s blood and to not be able to squander tax money on frivolous and irresponsible giveaways would be too shocking to even imagine! (Uh, how come they are still in office anyway?)
I say pull the pork spending anyway, it was wrong and the Mayor’s weak apology won’t make it right! In fact we should pull all pork spending. If the Republican’s want to work their way back into favor with the average voter they better get tough and stand up for things conservatives believe in for a change! Maybe Wally Herger-R Congressman from Chico could draft a bill ASAP to put a halt to ALL PORK spending? What do you say Wally, can you handle that one for us?
