Debate this: GOP keeps us safe, by Peter Worthington Toronto Sun
Next Monday, the inaugural Munk Debate takes place at Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum on the issue: “Be it resolved that the world is a safer place with a Republican in the White House.” ** What makes this significant is the quality of the four debaters — and prospects of the most unusual U.S. presidential election in the lives of most of us. ** In favour of the motion are Charles Krauthammer of the Washington Post who radiates common sense, knowledge and realism, and Niall Ferguson, a revisionist historian who supported the war in Iraq, opposed the 2004 re-election of George Bush. ** Opposing the resolution is former U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke who brokered the Dayton peace accords in Bosnia, and urged military action against Saddam Hussein “Not only because he possesses the potential for weapons of mass destruction, but because of the very nature of his regime . . . a clear and present danger at all times.” ** His debating partner is Samantha Power, Irish-born Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and foreign policy specialist who favours armed intervention to prevent genocide and humanitarian crises. She resigned as foreign policy adviser to Barrack Obama after calling Hillary Clinton a “monster.” If Obama becomes president, she is mentioned as cabinet material.
So, what do you think? Is the world safer with a republican in the White House?
