Pedro Nava (SHOWN LEFT) created it and his fellow democrat legislators supported it, a 10% tax on oil production in California! Nava of the 35th Assembly District (LA area) said, “The oil companies in California are getting a free ride. California is the third largest oil producing state. But, we are the only major oil producing state that does not charge a severance tax…”
Nava says a ten-percent tax on oil production would raise one-and-a-half-billion dollars each year. He says the money would help offset some recent state budget cuts that target education and programs for the elderly and needy. Nava says on his website that we don’t need to drill more oil wells, we just need to raise the taxes on the production from existing wells and the state will generate more money for all its pet projects!
Somehow Nava has missed the last 10 years of discussions about America’s desperate need to increase our domestic oil production because its a vital part of national security. A 10% tax on the oil business would result in an increase of cheaper imported oil and that’s clearly the wrong direction. As the tax goes into place it will reduce jobs in the state by thousands.

- What tax has ever helped the economy?
- What tax has never had an impact on inflation?
- What tax did not grow government?
If the increase in dependence on imported oil is somehow blocked, there is simply no way this 10% tax will not be passed on to you the consumers, despite Nava’s nave assurances.
Either way, this new tax will have a wide reaching effect in an already broke California. And the people who will be hurt most by it the most: The poor and middle class of course. They are already paying the highest pump prices in the lower 48 states thanks to California’s requirement for specially reformulated gasoline.
Liberals assured us the reformulated gasoline would reduce emissions and help clean up the environment, instead the PTFE additive didn’t live up to the promises and we got polluted ground water. The reformulation left Californians at high risk and virtually helpless should one of our refineries go down because we can’t import gasoline from out of state because it doesn’t meet our legal standards. Now you are being assured a 10% tax on oil will absolutely not be passed on to consumers and it will redistribute the wealth from the rich to help the poor? Yeah, sure.
