University Of California Approves 32% Tuition Hike

“I think it’s outrageous. They’ve already cut out a lot of our majors and programs. I’d rather they cut some of their (administrator) salaries.” – Ayanna Moody, student protester

Ayanna is exactly right. Education is for students first. The cause for this, as well as many other ills in California, is progressive policy. That is a problem that can only be addressed by voters. I hope Ayanna and her protesting friends bother to discover the principles and policies that would support a thriving economy, abundance of jobs, and sufficient revenues sent to a more responsible “smaller” government structure. Together, and with some work, we could achieve a balance that might even find her fees decreasing back to levels we had before the Carter years. Here’s the story:

LOS ANGELES -As hundreds of students demonstrated outside, University of California leaders on Thursday voted to approve a 32 percent hike in undergraduate fees, arguing the increase is crucial because of the state’s budget crisis. The UC Board of Regents, meeting at UCLA, approved a two-phase increase that will boost the average undergraduate fee $2,500 by next fall. That would bring the average annual cost to about $10,300 — a threefold increase in a decade.
