Senate Republicans Offer Obama an Out on Obamacare

Posted by Tina

All 45 Republicans in the Senate have called on President Obama to “Permanently delay the implementation of Obamacare,” according to The Weekly Standard. They made the request in the form of a letter:

“We write to express concern that in your recent decision to delay implementation of the employer mandate, you have unilaterally acted and failed to work with Congress on such a significant decision. Further, while your action finally acknowledges some of the many burdens this law will place on job creators, we believe the rest of this law should be permanently delayed for everyone in order to avoid significant economic harm to American families,” the senators write.

In response to questions about the administration’s decision, your senior advisor Valerie Jarrett said, “We are listening,” while referring to the concerns of the business community over the onerous employer mandate that will result in fewer jobs and employees working fewer hours. We have been listening as well, and as more employers have attempted to understand your burdensome requirements in the Affordable Care Act, the louder their outrage has become.

We are also listening to the views of the American people. A recent Gallup poll from June of 2013 showed that a majority of Americans disapprove of the Affordable Care Act. The same survey revealed that for every one person who believes they will be better off under the Affordable Care Act, two believe they will be worse off. Opposition to your health law is growing, and it will continue to grow as more Americans realize that the law is built upon broken promises and will result in higher health care costs and more taxes.

Under the individual mandate, the IRS, which is still under multiple investigations for unfairly targeting conservative groups, will play a central role in the implementation of the health care law in our country. Last fall, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that nearly six million Americans, primarily in the middle class, will have to pay a tax under the individual mandate, which was two million more than previously estimated. When the Affordable Care Act is fully implemented, the average individual mandate tax will be nearly $1,200, which clearly contradicts your previous statement that the individual mandate “is absolutely not a tax increase.”

Further, families are facing significant increases in premiums. Last week, the Wall Street Journal published an analysis of premiums and concluded that under your law some Americans will see their premiums “double or even triple,” which is the opposite of your promise that premiums will go down by $2,500 for American families.

Given the widely-held belief by the American people that the Affordable Care Act will not fulfill its promises and will result in higher costs for American families, we implore you to listen to the American people. This law is unworkable and harmful to the economy and to American families, and your actions to delay the employer mandate are an acknowledgement of this fact. While your recent action provides temporary relief for some, we believe that all Americans deserve permanent relief from this onerous law, so that we can adopt common-sense reforms that will actually lower costs and that Americans support.

The signatories include: “Senators Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Richard Burr (R-N.C.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), Jeffrey Chiesa (R-N.J.), Dan Coats (R-Ind.), Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Dean Heller (R-Nev.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Mike Johanns (R-Neb.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Mark Kirk (R-Ill.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), John McCain (R-Ariz.), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), David Vitter (R-La.), and Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), as well as Senator Rubio and Senator Thune”.

The White House is sending mixed messages. On the one hand they have selectively called for a delay in implementation. On the other, the HHS Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius, is spending even more money (multi-millions) in an attempt to sell the unpopular product to a citizenry that isn’t buying and hasn’t a clue what to do in states that are also grossly unprepared to implement the law.

This train wreck can be avoided completely. It’s likely that all politicians running for reelection would like to avoid having Obamacare become an issue at election time next year. Call your representatives and congressmen and let them know that you know the Obama choo choo is designed to derail (And explode)…it should never be allowed to reach its proposed destination.

Ralph Tupper Steps Down at Chico Air Museum

by Jack Lee

There’s so much negative news these days, sometimes we get the impression there’s a distinct lacking of good in people in this world and then a good guy steps forward and restores a little bit of our lostCAM2 faith in humanity.   This time I’m speaking about Chico’s Ralph Tupper, personnel supervisor at the Chico Air Museum.   He’s been part of the museum since the beginning.  He could have spent his retirement years doing things for himself, but instead he chose to work with other volunteers trying to get our air museum up and running.    Fortunately for all their efforts we have a fine museum now.

Ralph spent a fair amount of his own money and dedicated over 8 years of his life volunteering for the Chico Air Museum. I’m hoping Ralph won’t be mad at me for writing this because he’s the kind of guy who doesn’t care about recognition for his good deeds, but I think this is something than needs to be said for Ralph and for all the CAM volunteers.  (Pic on the right is Chico’ army flying school c1944)

I got to know Ralph about a year ago when I volunteered to work at the Chico Air Museum, then last Sunday Ralph told me it was his final shift after giving us countless hours of his well earned retirement to be key CAM member.   He was the guy who made sure the museum was properly staffed and kept open according to the schedule, and he did it without ever drawing a paycheck!

CAM1Almost every Fri., Sat. and Sun. Ralph was out there, open up, putting in a full shift, talking with visitors, helping docents learn the ropes and so much more.  At home he continued his volunteer work, emailing other volunteers, coordinating work schedules and signing up new volunteers. When a shift went unfilled, Ralph took it upon himself to be there just so people could count on the museum being open. Without taking away anything from our other fine volunteers, it’s a safe bet that Ralph put in as much or more time than anyone else on staff.  He made one tremendous effort on behalf of the citizens of Chico!

However, time takes it’s toll on all of us and there came that day when Ralph said he just couldn’t keep up his rigorous schedule, often opening early and closing late.  So it was that Ralph decided to let someone else take over.  It was by sheer chance that I had the privilege of working with him on his last shift, Sunday, 7-7-13.   There was no retirement party, no well deserved accolades from his fellow docents, it was just a normal day, business as usual, and it was exactly how Ralph wanted it. He’s a quiet kind of guy who doesn’t like to take up a lot space, if you know what I mean?

Ralph is a retired pilot, an author and just an all around great guy. I wish him well in whatever future endeavors he has planned. I know you folks would want to wish him well too. Thanks to Ralph and our other great CAM volunteers, we have an air museum we can all be proud of and one that’s hosted many thousands of visitors.

Now here’s the good news… it’s about to grow to the next level.  It looks like we may have a new hanger facility, with many more aircraft exhibits that have been sitting in storage looking for space to hang them.  This museum and our future facility would not have been possible without those great volunteers like Ralph, always operating quietly behind the scenes to make things happen.   He will be missed, but maybe we can get him back once in awhile as a docent, he’s got a lot of great airplane stories kids love to hear!

A Look at Gun Violence, General Violence and Most Important…. Rhetoric v. Truth

As you review the statistics below keep in mind that liberals are quick to point out that strict gun control laws are working to save lives.   The statistics I found make no such conclusion.  Consider that California ranks number 1 as the toughest state in the union for restrictive gun control laws, yet three of the nation’s top 10 most violent cities are in California!    As a State, California ranks as the 14th most violent in the nation (per capita).  That’s sure nothing to brag about, is it?

The District of Columbia has hands down the most strict gun laws around, yet they are twice as violent as the worst state!   In fact, many of the 20 most violent states are also among those with the most restrictive gun laws and so are some of the more relaxed gun law states, which is why I say the gun statistics alone are less a predictor of violence than poverty or race.

Now, if you look only at gun violence the names and rankings of the states will change a bit, but still many of those most violent States rank tops in gun control laws too.   If there is any conclusion to be reached here it is that poverty is a good indicator for violence as evidenced by many of the poor Southern States with high crime.    As long as we’re being candid, I can’t let this go unaddressed.  The most over represented portion of our population in poverty are black Americans.   Blacks are also the most over represented in prison.  Proverty = Crime =- Prisons….it’s not that hard to figure out.

Clearly we have serious issues in one segment of our American society, but for some reason it’s not politically acceptable  to  notice it?   If you do, watch out, you’ll be fingered as a racist.   Guns alone are a much easier issue to address, even though gun violence is skewed by the actions of one group…. black Americans.  Omitting this serves no useful purpose for problem solving.

The statistics shown below are, ambiguous or inconclusive that tough gun control laws make for safer states and cities.   However, keep in mind the statistics below do not discriminate between legal (justifiable) and illegal shootings.  Therefore, to look only at gun violence is to take the narrow view.  That may be more helpful in scoring political points for the left, but it doesn’t address the more complex underlying problems.   Overall violence is the statistic we need to address because this is broader and more logical view if we are to determine our relative safety in any given city or state.   Gun violence is only one component of the big picture.

Pathologist: Zimmerman Should Have Been Taken to Hospital for Head Injury

Posted by Tina

The Zimmerman trial continues this week with a number of witnesses whose testimony only adds to the case the defense is constructing that Zimmerman acted in self-defense. I found the testimony of one expert witness a pathologists very interesting:

Vincent Di Maio, a pathologist testifying on Tuesday in the trial of George Zimmerman for the 2012 murder of Trayvon Martin, asserted that the police were wrong to take Zimmerman from the scene of the incident directly to the police station and not the hospital. He said that the injuries Zimmerman sustained were serious enough to merit a hospital visit. Di Maio added that, if Zimmerman had succumbed to his wounds, his family could have sued the Sanford police department and won. …

…”Even, you know, looking at them outside – someone looking at them can say, ‘oh, they’re all right,'” he added. “It happens all the time. People think they are all right and then they die a few hours later.”
“That’s why police in this case should have taken Mr. Zimmerman to a hospital, not to the police station,” Di Maio continued. “Because if he had died in the police station they would have been sued and the family would have won the lawsuit because he had head injuries that means you take him to the hospital.”

The first thing that came to mind for me was the big flap about head injuries in professional football. It isn’t just the blow to the skull that’s dangerous…it’s the brain rattling around inside. Repeated blows to the head can result in more than concussion.

This testimony pushed the issue of self defense up a notch for me…how about you?

Freedom and Capitalism Work

Posted by Tina

Throughout the land people are frustrated and angry.

While the rest of the world is running as fast as they can from the tyranny of control from the top through redistribution and corporatism America, the nation best known for freedom, is rushing to the abyss. It’s time to turn our frustration and anger into a countrywide call for freedom and free market principals that will allow our capitalist system to thrive. It is, unfortunately, necessary at the same time to extol the virtues of capitalism in the land that was once the envy of the entire world. Our children have not been apprised of their heritage and so most do not understand that freedom and capitalism work. That’s right…of all the systems devised by man freedom and capitalism, supported by the rule of law, work best to uplift mankind from poverty and despair and afford them the opportunity to live in dignity.

In the 1980’s the world was inspired by that great voice of liberty and freedom, Ronald Reagan, to move toward greater freedom and free market capitalism. Since that timepoverty levels around the world have dropped significantly:

In 1990, there were more than 2 billion people throughout the globe living under the international poverty line of $1.25 a day. By 2010, 1 billion of those people had risen out of poverty! This is an example of the positive impact economic freedom has on the world.

If these countries maintain their economic growth rate, poverty would fall from the one billion it’s at today, to just over 200 million by the year 2030.

That’s an amazing statistic but if the trend is to continue it is imperative that the United States return to its natural roots and become a leader for freedom and capitalism once again. America needs strong inspirational voices…voices of experience like that of Rafael Cruz, father of Senator Ted Cruz, who spoke recently at a Freedom Works event in Utah:

The Cuban-born father of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz spoke at length about his life in Cuba, his experiences with socialism and authoritarianism, and the false promises of dictators. Cruz told the crowd of tea party supporters, “as a teenager I found myself involved in a revolution. I remember during that time, a young charismatic leader rose up talking about ‘hope and change.'” As the crowd laughed, Cruz threw them a curve ball: “His name was Fidel Castro.”

Rafael Cruz then drew comparisons between policies of Castro and Obama, stating, “That same man who had been talking before about hope and change, now was talking about how the rich are evil, about how they oppress the people, and about the need to redistribute the wealth. He began attacking the press, curtail freedom of the press, attacking religion, confiscating property. Then he began instituting socialized medicine, and imposing wage-and-price controls. Basically reducing everybody’s salary to a least common denominator.”

He then became more specific, saying, “I think the most ominous words I’ve ever heard was in the last two State of the Union addresses, when our president said, ‘If Congress does not act, I will act unilaterally.’ Not much different than that old bearded friend that I left behind in Cuba. Government by decree, by executive order, just like a dictator — like Fidel Castro.”

Later, Cruz urged the crowd to fight back, saying, “When I faced oppression in Cuba, I had a place to come to. If we lose our freedoms here, where are we going to go?’ There is no place to go.”
Rafael Cruz added that the Obama administration had compelled him to “remain silent no more.”

“I feel so offended when our president goes around the world apologizing for America and negating our American exceptionalism,” he said. “But the truth is, this country is exceptional and unique in the world… And you know, when we see the intrusion on our liberties; when we see — whether it is looking at our emails, or listening to our telephone calls — or we see the IRS targeting tea party groups — freedom-loving groups — for their political ideology, I say we can remain silent no more. Silent no more.”

The people of America, and particularly young people, need to hear from people like this wonderful man who speaks not from ideology but from his personal experience. Americans need to know that the best hope there is for a positive future is freedom and the opportunity to create personal wealth. They need to know that poverty can be eliminated when freedom and capitalism are fully embraced. They need to know that the wealth and technology that will solve the world’s problems requires free markets to thrive. They also need to understand that in America it is the more conservative politicians that are most likely to move America toward policies that create freedom and that remove barriers so that businesses can grow and thrive. They need to get to know those politicians who are most likely to restore our nation as the leader of freedom in the world. We all need to get behind those leaders and support them to remove those who believe that control from Washington DC is better. A reminder: more people are living in poverty in America today because of the policies of the current administration. America deserves better…America IS better.

Let freedom ring!

Sex for Ammo?

This morning I lucked out and was able to buy two boxes of ammo. I placed the boxes on the front seat and headed back home, but stopped at a gas station where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a short skirt was filling up her car at the next pump.

She glanced at the two boxes of ammo, bent over and leaned in my passenger window, and said in a sexy voice, “I’m a big believer in barter, old fella. Would you be interested in trading sex for ammo?”

I thought for a few seconds and asked, “What kind of ammo ‘ya got?”

After 117 Years Farmer Calls It Quits – Stupid FDA Regulations!!!

Posted by Tina

I know a lot of people around here are in the farming business so when I read about Bessemer Farms shutting down a portion of its business it made me angry…and then of course sad. Bessemer Farms of Akron, Ohio has been in Business for 117 years. In that time they have grown a lot of corn, shipped it all over the world, and fed a lot of hungry people. They have also grown vegetables for the local markets…this is the part of their business that is under federal attack.

The FDA will soon implement new regulations that trace every vegetable from seed to market in order to “pinpoint where contamination occurs.” The regulations create new methods and inspections that spell out a daunting, expensive task for growers. It means Bessemer Farms will no longer supply local markets or sell from their road side market. Mr. Bessemer has called it quits and planted his vegetable fields in soybeans, a commodity that isn’t affected by the new rules. Unfortunately he also had to let all of his workers go:

“We don’t want to quit, we were forced out of the business. We can’t spend enough money to comply,” he said. “We’ve been farming for 117 years. I’m the third generation and we’re being put out of business by the government. We can’t comply with all of the safety laws. We haven’t poisoned anybody with an ear of corn for 117 years and we’ve shipped it all over,” he said.

“I can fight the bugs, I can fight the lack of rain, but when the guy comes with a clipboard what are you going to do?” Bessemer said.

While I applaud efforts to keep food safe for consumption I doubt very seriously that new regulations beyond what we already have in place will make enough difference to justify the nightmare and cost of these new regulations. As for Mr. Bessemer, at aged seventy he says just isn’t up to making the changes that will be required of him. It occurs to me that farms that sell organic produce may have a big shock coming their way…organic vegetables are already expensive…this could really hurt their bottom line.

This is just flat out ridiculous! The federal government shouldn’t be trying to micromanage every little thing that goes on in every business. The government has proven itself to be the most wasteful, corrupt, mismanaged operation in the country and they imagine they have the smarts to inform farmers (And other business) how best to deliver a quality product safely to market? How dare they!

It’s time to rid ourselves of these bureaucratic elitist in Washington…bunch of rats, sneaking around the granaries, eating up all the profits and destroying a lot of jobs with useless, silly, expensive busywork. The only “difference” these bureaucrats are making is the total destruction of a once great nation.

Shame on them…and enough already!

Another Case of Spying (This time it could be on you!)

The License Plate Reader

It’s the size of a 200 page paperback book and when installed on the outside of police cars it can log thousands of license plates in an eight-hour patrol shift. It’s in use in a number of bay area cities that are part of a broader matrix that is coordinated by what is called in the trade, a Fusion Center. Fusion Centers typically run by a government contractor that oversees a mix of police employees and sub-contractors. The Fusion Center holds the computers and runs the detection software and then fees this information back to the subscribing law enforcement agencies. Intelligence like this doesn’t come cheap, typically a single subscriber agency is required to pony up around a million bucks, however, just to get it this project up and running as a showcase for other law enforcement customers this one cost the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center a mere $340,000.

scope23The Photograph to go with the License Plate

When news of the license plate readers leaked to the media, one concerned citizen petitioned to know exactly how many times his license plate was read and his vehicles photographed along with the occupants. He was shocked to find out his two cars had been recorded on 112 occasions, including one image from 2009 that shows him and his daughters stepping out of his Toyota Prius in their driveway. Yes, a Prius…you couldn’t make this stuff up, this guy was so straight, he’s never had a parking ticket, he certainly NEVER been accused of a crime and never done anything EVER to warrant this level of surveillance, yet there it is and it could just as easily have been you, and maybe it was, been to the bay area recently?

That photograph (not the one in this article – that’s made up), made him “frightened and concerned about the magnitude of police surveillance and data collection” said the local San Leandro newspaper. According to their investigation, a single patrol car in San Leandro equipped with a plate reader had logged his car once a week on average, photographing his license plate and documenting the time and location.

At a rapid pace, and mostly hidden from the public, police agencies throughout California have been collecting millions of records on drivers and feeding them to intelligence fusion centers operated by local, state and federal law enforcement.

Enter Big Brother

Now here’s the kicker. This goes back to the Palantir folks. They are heavily connected with the CIA and other high level intelligence agencies and have been since shortly after 9/11. At the time, it was needed too, because places like FBI, CIA, DOJ, DEA, NSA and others used their own customized software and this meant it didn’t integrate, well or at all, with other computer systems. This caused blind spots, lost data and delays in evaluating terrorist threats and then Palantir arrived on the scene! They were like this Genie that cast a magical net over all the data systems in all the intelligence agencies and then with an amazing mystical power they were able to decipher every single agency’s coded information, put it in a universal language and then redirect it that info (like a router) to whatever other intel agency was in need, but with a number of need to know restrictions. Ah, but it also did much more! Exactly how much more is still top secret, but I can assure you it involved data mining and this all seeing system was by design capable of gathering information from far more than just government agency computer files.

The Ulimate Terrorist Mousetrap is also the Ultimate Crime Mousetrap

When turned loose Palantir could gather information (data mining) on your daily activities, travel, emails, banking, medical records, relatives, friends and much, much more. Use your imagination…if the data exists out here, it can find it. However, this raised some immediate concerns by our dear leaders who didn’t want it snooping around their doors. So, it was mutually agreed that it should never, ever, be used on American citizens and that’s a promise! Rather it would be used in places like Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan and wherever there were hotbeds of terrorist activities and it would sort them out, group them by threat, and keep the boots on the ground apprised of the latest developments so they could do an occasional round up for Guantanamo. This resulted in some very spectacular captures of top Al Qaeda terrorists, but nobody outside the program knew exactly how it was being done? It was just assumed that traditional methods were working better than normal and our news media didn’t see anything odd, just really dedicated anti-terrorists units doing an extra good job! The only problem for the program was a matter of restraint, not doing too good (Osama bin Laden), lest questions be asked…

“We Promise Never Ever to use it Inside the USA”

The mission is now a decade old and as it has been with other government programs, it appears we have mission creep in the Palantir program too. Now enters domestic spying as revealed by Edward Snowden. How shall I say this now? Ummm, okay, in order to sort of sidestep some of the conditions in that original agreement about domestic spying, a de-tuned version of Palantir was created for use by law enforcement. The license plate reader was one element of that de-turned version. A tiny spin-off of the mother program, but there were others and exactly how many others remains to be seen.

You may recall a few months ago the New York City Police Department got their hands spanked when they were caught using some law enforcement intel program to map out ethnic neighborhoods (presumably those were Islamic neighborhoods). Their excuse was it was just an experiment to see if their was any overlaps on their pin maps to indicate terrorist activity. However, nothing much came of it, except to be told not to do that anymore! Well guess what, Palantir can do that, and the New York City Police Dept., was allowed access to Palantir on a test basis because of their world class anti-terrorist unit. Do you really need anymore to connect the dots?

There’s no question that this powerful program can be extremely helpful to law enforcement. You need only a top secret clearance and a quickie look at all the top terrorists it’s helped to take down to see that. And you don’t need all the tools in the Palantir tool belt to do it, just one of them can make a big difference, like the license plate reader and the ability to analyse the data, which potentially could detect a drug house, ID everyone in the drug house, ID their suppliers and all their customers and all their friends and even dig into their families data and….. and the list keeps on growing…. ad infinitum until some day it reaches you!

Six degrees of separation is all that it takes to connect us to almost any one, any where. The good part here is this big brother program is the Code of Conduct strictly adhered to by those in government that promised to use it only for good, it’s basically the same code of conduct the IRS uses.

Now tell me you are not the least little bit afraid?   You should be…. because if you just read this you’re now on the watch list!   (Just kidding…or am I????)

Obamacare Train Wreck Averted – America Continues in Decline

by Tina Grazier

America is in trouble. Our federal economic woes grow daily, states and cities are in serious economic trouble and the deadline for implementation of Obamcare is now being delayed adding to the mess. State exchanges are nonexistent or not yet ready, people aren’t sure what will be expected of them, and many employers are still in the dark about what rules apply to them. The administration is scrambling to avoid campaign fallout in 2012 and calm growing fear and dread over rising costs and uncertainty by delaying the employer mandate for a year and by giving 16 states a waver for verification on applicant’s eligibility for subsidies. That last being an open invitation for corruption. Can it get any worse? I’m afraid it can, yes.

It’s completely credible that this health care mess was anticipated given the administration’s ultimate goal of single payer healthcare run by the federal government. How else to explain the radical foisting of such a monstrous law on the people during this time of unprecedented economic decline and failure. The Obama administration seems to be strictly committed to our total destruction…fundamental transformation is just plain ugly!

We find ourselves in a similar position to the founders who felt the heavy oppressive hand of the King of England and chose to rebel. Our nation’s economy is hurtling toward devastating ruin. Opportunities to work and acquire personal wealth have been seriously blunted and compromised. Our checks and balances system of government has been usurped. The people are falling into poverty and dependency. Government conspires with business giants and green schemers to force unproven energy technologies and block production of less expensive, established energy sources.

People, we cannot allow this tin hat punk administration to get away with transforming our free dynamic country into a third world failure. Free market principles will restore the means to economic freedom and opportunity for all Americans. But it will require strong leadership and persistent effort by the people to undo the terrible state of ruin this administration has created. Are we up to the task? I honestly do not know.

See Obamacare story at FOX News and related commentary at The American Thinker which concludes:

The fact is, these are not just accidents or normal growing pains, but the inevitable consequences of excessively complex legislation born of corrupt politics and no sound economic principles. Perhaps the majority of Americans, who now disapprove of the law, are on to something.

Some people think that dependency is too entrenched now and this lack of urge or desire, coupled with a low state of morality, will work together to make America continue on its current path to third world status. I believe what is needed is a strong leaders. That given opportunity and freedom people will become aroused as they see opportunities open. At this point I just hope we get a chance to find out.
