Future News – Chico’s New Museum of Fine Art

by Jack

7047-pieswt-thumb-262x192-7046.jpg

Here’s a story that is a little ahead of it’s time, but it could be important to our City if it works out. Chico may be getting a new art museum… if talks conclude successfully. Right now negotiations are on track.

Life long resident, Reed Applegate, is offering his private collection consisting of over 400 paintings and other art forms to the public. They’re all done by Northern California artists, some well known and some not so well known, but all great artists in their own rite and they cover a very wide span of art mediums.

The old VFW hall on the Esplanade is the proposed site. However, considerable renovation work would have to be done on the 18,000 s.f. building to bring it up to suitable condition for the public, including ADA compliance.

This is going to take some time and even if the proposed plan is accepted by the City, it may take two or three years before it’s completed and ready for the public. Currently, the City is surveying the outside of the VFW building for possible repairs and surprisingly, so far it looks pretty good, not much to be done. The inside would be renovated by Reed and that would be a major project.

Some of the more famous art that would be featured are done by notables like Wayne Thiebaud, Richard Hornady, Sal Kassa and Robert Arnnessen. Reed Applegate’s collection includes, sculptures, oil and acrylic paintings, metal etchings, photography, prints, drawings and even art glass.

Mr. Applegate believes the museum would help Chico increase tourism (helping with city revenues) by adding to the existing art in away that could become a walking tour of art in the downtown. If you know Chico this would be from the Hands sculpture at City Hall on the South end, past Plaza Park to the Diamond Hotel and alli the sidewalk art. Then walking West to the Chico Museum across from Madison Bear, then on to the Bidwell Mansion, the Science Museum, and then concluding at Fine Arts museum in the VFW building. But, the art tour is far from over and for those with a vehicle; we have the Chico Air Museum in the far North at the airport as well as other art displays near the portals to Chico.

Welfare Costs – $60,000 per Family!

from the Weekly Standard. . .

New data compiled by the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee shows that, last year, the United States spent over $60,000 to support welfare programs per each household that is in poverty. The calculations are based on data from the Census, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Congressional Research Services.

“According to the Census’s American Community Survey, the number of households with incomes below the poverty line in 2011 was 16,807,795,” the Senate Budget Committee notes. “If you divide total federal and state spending by the number of households with incomes below the poverty line, the average spending per household in poverty was $61,194 in 2011.”

7045-welfarecost32-thumb-600x442-7044.jpg

This dollar figure is almost three times the amount the average household on poverty lives on per year. “If the spending on these programs were converted into cash, and distributed exclusively to the nation’s households below the poverty line, this cash amount would be over 2.5 times the federal poverty threshold for a family of four, which in 2011 was $22,350,” the Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee note.

To be clear, not all households living below the poverty line receive $61,194 worth of assistance per year. After all, many above the poverty line also receive benefits from social welfare programs (e.g. pell grants).

But if welfare is meant to help bring those below the poverty line to a better place, it helps demonstrate that numbers do not add up.

A congressional report from CRS recently revealed that the United States now spends more on means-tested welfare than any other item in the federal budget–including Social Security, Medicare, or national defense. Including state contributions to the roughly 80 federal poverty programs, the total amount spent in 2011 was approximately $1 trillion. Federal spending alone on these programs was up 32 percent since 2008.

The U.S. Census Bureau estimated that almost 110 million Americans received some form of means-tested welfare in 2011.

These figures exclude entitlements like Medicare and Social Security to which people contribute, and they refer exclusively to low-income direct and indirect financial support–such as food stamps, public housing, child care, energy assistance, direct cash aid, etc.For instance, 47 million Americans currently receive food stamps, and USDA has engaged in an aggressive outreach campaign to boost enrollment even further, arguing that “every dollar of SNAP benefits generates $1.84 in the economy… It’s the most direct stimulus you can get.” (Economic growth, however, is weaker this year than the two years prior, even as food stamp “stimulus” has reached an all-time high.)

Washington Examiner – NPR Poll – Romney 48% Obama 47%

Say what? Yes that’s right…an NPR poll has Romney currently leading the President!

Ayers said that Romney is doing particularly well among independent voters. According to NPR, “most of the gains for Romney have come from independents, who went from favoring Romney by a few points before the debates to favoring him 51% to 39% after the debates.”

Ayres added, “So were it not for the debates, I think Obama would be cruising to a victory right now. Because of the debates, this is going to be an incredibly close election.”

Latest Polling on Prop 30 – Support Faltering

Polls Show Prop 30 Falling Short, Gov. Brown making the rounds to rally support, but it may be too late. Brown will be at CSUC at noon Monday pitching Prop 30.

VOTE NO on 30 – It’s a $50B Tax Hike we can’t afford and it’s a Jobs Killer!

Who doesn’t understand that raising taxes when you’re in recession is a bad idea? Even Obama figured that out, but not our CA legislators who want Prop 30 to pass.

Here’s what you need to know about Prop 30 (aside from coming at totally the wrong time) First off, it’s being advertised with a big whopper as it’s key point. Give us the money or watch your schools fail! Well, they’re already failing… but, Prop. 30 does not require ANY cuts to schools in the event that it does not pass. Fact is, Prop 30 has no reference to any trigger cuts! See, they lied to us again.

Those so-called trigger cuts they have threatened were purely a creation of the liberal politicians in Sacramento – it’s just a way of scaring the voters to vote yes for higher taxes (pass 30 or we kill schools). It is another deceptive budget gimmick from Sacramento.

When 30 fails, the governor and the legislature can immediately go back in and correct the education funding ship. They simply need to have the will power to do it and to make the tough decisions that we are paying them to make instead of always bucking it to voters with calls for higher taxes.

The fact of the matter is the politicians and the governor can do better than this Prop. 30 gimmick. And they will. . . if we vote no on 30.

Need to know more?

Shown left are two of CSUC’s debate team members, Hannah and Michael (last names withheld) . They will partner with members from the community.

California State University, Chico students, community members and, for the first time, Butte College students will participate in this year’s Great Debate on Friday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

This year’s topic is government spending and taxation. Students will be discussing and presenting on tax havens, tax rates, Medicaid/Medicare, law enforcement, drug policy, welfare spending, Proposition 30 and a variety of local issues.

The debates, presentations and student panels will be held in Chico City Hall chambers, 421 Main St., and are free and open to the public.

Throughout the day, students from various communication studies classes will give presentations and participate in debates about this year’s topic. At the Civic Expo, held on the patio in front of the council chambers, community members will have the opportunity to learn more about spending and taxation and interact with students.

Zach Justus, professor of communication studies and coordinator of the Chico Great Debate, said the Republican Party and the Democratic Party will also have tables at the expo.

The day will also include a City Council Candidate Forum in which candidates will address local spending and taxation issues. This will take place from noon to 2 p.m. in the Downtown City Plaza.

The main event of the evening will be “Should California Pass Proposition 30?” which will take place at 6:30 p.m. in Chico City Hall.
