A New Twist on the Right to Bear Arms

by Jack Lee

Does a concealed weapons permit dovetail with the Constitutional [right] to, keep and bear arms?

One might think so, the concealed carry weapons permit (CCW) is a mere bureaucratic extension of the right to carry. However, in actual practice the concealed carry permit has been issued arbitrarily. The Kern County Sheriff issued over 3000 permits in a 3 year period, only 12 had been handed out in San Francisco and only 3 in Los Angeles County.

In a number of California counties your odds of getting a CCW permit go up proportionate to the size of your contribution to the Sheriff’s re-election fund. If you were a local politician, you most likely got your permit, but if you were merely Joe Blow the taxpayer the odds of getting that weapon’s permit range from zero to good depending on which county you happen to live in.

A City Chief of Police is legally able to issue such permits, but rarely does now because that power was reined in by their City Council who feared a lawsuit.

Chavez Says Hell Take Gitmo Detainees

** Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has said he is prepared to receive detainees held by the US military at the Guantanamo Bay camp in Cuba. (Snip) Mr Chavez made his offer at a summit of South American and Arab countries. It is highly unlikely the Pentagon will take him up on it, however, given the poor state of US ties with Venezuela. Stevens Conviction Set Aside

The Ted Stevens Scandal

** After yesterday’s dismissal, time to put prosecutors in the dock. *** Last fall, the senior Senator from Alaska was the poster octogenarian for political corruption. As of yesterday, Ted Stevens is merely another casualty of abusive prosecutors out to make a name for themselves. *** The Justice Department yesterday moved to set aside an October conviction on ethics charges and forgo any future trials for Senator Stevens. He walks free, in other words, an innocent man. In the motion, Justice said it “recently discovered” that prosecutors withheld from the defense notes about an interview last April with the state’s star witness, Bill Allen, that contradicted his subsequent testimony. Under the Brady Rule for evidence, Justice was obliged to share that with Senator Stevens’s lawyers. *** This was one of many prosecutorial missteps that came to light after Mr. Stevens was found guilty less than two weeks before Election Day. The Republican narrowly lost his bid for a seventh term. Attorney General Eric Holder yesterday promised a “thorough” probe into the conduct of prosecutors, which is the least the Department owes Mr. Stevens. The Obama Administration made the political calculation here to walk away from the original mistake made by Bush Justice rather than further embarrass the Department in post-trial hearings. Up in Smoke

Posted by Tina

** WASHINGTON (AP) One of President Barack Obama’s campaign pledges on taxes went up in puffs of smoke Wednesday. The largest increase in tobacco taxes took effect despite Obama’s promise not to raise taxes of any kind on families earning under $250,000 or individuals under $200,000. This is one tax that disproportionately affects the poor, who are more likely to smoke than the rich. AP **

He’s against Americans using our oil but….

It’s Hugo Chavez’ B-Day!

by Jack

March 30: This is Hugo Chavez’ birthday..in case you want to celebrate it. Chavez is asking his one known loyal follower in the USA (Cindy Sheehan) and the other three or four dozen devotees in his own country, to declare for themselves a two day holiday in his honor so they can extole his greatness in a love fest of adoration.

Elsewhere BBC reports, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez missed his birthday party in Tehran on Friday, but his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has some presents in store for his fellow anti-U.S. firebrand on Saturday. Iran’s presidential office invited reporters to Tehran airport to greet Chavez who turns 52 on Friday. But after several hours waiting they were sent home. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad expects to present Chavez with the Humanitarian Medal, one of Iran’s highest honors.

PETA – Where’s Our Millions Being Spent?

by Jack Lee

PETA is a non-profit organziation and the funds it uses are from donations, however a number of recent news stories indicated the donations may not be going to where they were intended. Like most of you, I thought PETA was mostly about lobbying and protesting for animal rights. I was surprised to know they run animal shelters that they claim are for finding dogs and cats good homes. I was even more suprised to find out that 95% of pets in their care…were killed. So where are all those many millions in donations going, executive salaries? One thing is for sure, the money is not going to find good homes for the animals in their care!

According to a recent news story, “an official report filed by PETA itself shows that the animal rights group put to death nearly every dog, cat, and other pet it took in for adoption in 2006. During that year, the well-known animal rights group managed to find adoptive homes for just 12 animals. The organization killed 2,981 of the 3,061 “companion animals” it took in.

According to David Martosko, Research Director for CCF… “It is absurd to classify PETA as a ‘humane society’ when its employees are slaughtering nearly every companion animal they bring in. PETA has killed over 17,000 pets since 1998. Given the group’s astonishing habit of killing adoptable dogs and cats with such ruthless efficiency, it’s only fair that the state of Virginia refer to PETA as a slaughterhouse.”

ZEROIts a Relevant Number!

globe.STK22122NXS.jpgby Tina Grazier

In the mid to late eighties I noticed something wonderful had happened, an amazing number of small businesses had cropped up and were flourishing everywhere I looked. There was an explosion of industry and of artistic expression. Whether on Main Street, or in my mailbox in the form of mail order catalogues, enthusiasm for the entrepreneurial spirit had inspired a deluge of cottage industries. Funding for these small businesses and growing firms came from people in the private sector as the Great Communicators tax cuts and small government policies put invigorating power into the hands of the American people. It was an exciting time and it was exactly as Ronald Reagan had envisioned.

The buying and production power in America soon began to have an effect in other countries around the globe. Even small nations with poor inhabitants found their citizens working and bringing home the bacon as factories sprung up to aid and supplement the growing industries in America. Whole countries embraced the Reagan vision and brought growth and prosperity like they had never seen before. Independence, opportunity and growth sparkled in the global air as clearly and as brightly as a Fourth of July fireworks display. America, and the entrepreneurial spirit of her people, became, once again, an inspiration to the world.

Guru Gore in the Spotlight for Earth Hour

AlGore100px-AlGoreGlobalWarmingTalk.jpgPosted by Tina

A photo circulating online is purpotedly the lit up home of Al Gore. It looks like an extremely gauch Christmas display…but the following local discription is probably more accurate.

Al Gore Leaves The Light On For Ya, by Kleinheider Post Politics, Nashville Post

** Even during Earth Hour. President of the Tennessee Center For Policy Research Drew Johnson takes a Saturday drive by Al Gores during the time most environmentalists went dark: I pulled up to Als house, located in the posh Belle Meade section of Nashville, at 8:48pm right in the middle of Earth Hour. I found that the main spotlights that usually illuminate his 9,000 square foot mansion were dark, but several of the lights inside the house were on. *** In fact, most of the windows were lit by the familiar blue-ish hue indicating that floor lamps and ceiling fixtures were off, but TV screens and computer monitors were hard at work. (In other words, his house looked the way most houses look about 1:45am when their inhabitants are distractedly watching Cheaters or Chelsea Lately reruns.) *** The kicker, though, were the dozen or so floodlights grandly highlighting several trees and illuminating the driveway entrance of Gores mansion. *** I [kid] you not, my friends, the savior of the environment couldnt be bothered to turn off the gaudy lights that show off his goofy trees. **
