Bailout Bingo

** MANAGUA — To offset the recent wave of factory closings and work suspensions at U.S. textile and manufacturing plants in Central America, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega is asking the U.S. government for an economic bailout plan for Central America. Miami Herald **

** The Internal Revenue Service, under pressure to bring in money to the faltering economy, plans to give offshore tax evaders a big break. The agency has drafted a plan that significantly lowers a penalty that applies to wealthy Americans who hide money overseas in secret accounts. *** The plan was developed amid a widening investigation into wealthy American clients of UBS but will apply to clients of other banks as well. Dark Ages Redux

Posted by Tina

** On Sunday, lefties will celebrate Earth Hour by shutting off the lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. A whole bunch of cities and corporations will also turn down the lights to show their political correctness. Besides, it is Sunday night and none of these buinesses and government offices are open anyway. We had plenty of Earth Hours in Western Europe from 500 AD to 1000 AD. We called it the Dark Ages… charleston Daily Mail **

Regulation and Oversight Emanuel Style

Posted by Tina

Weve been told that deregulation under Republicans and lack of proper oversight under GWB was responsible for failures and the economic meltdown. If thats true, how to resolve this small paragraph:

** Before its portfolio of bad loans helped trigger the current housing crisis, mortgage giant Freddie Mac was the focus of a major accounting scandal that led to a management shake-up, huge fines and scalding condemnation of passive directors by a top federal regulator. One of those allegedly asleep-at-the-switch board members was Chicago’s Rahm Emanuelnow chief of staff to President Barack Obamawho made at least $320,000 for a 14-month stint at Freddie Mac that required little effort. *** Emanuel’s Freddie Mac involvement has been a prominent point on his political rsum, and his healthy payday from the firm has been no secret either. What is less known, however, is how little he apparently did for his money and how he benefited from the kind of cozy ties between Washington and Wall Street that have fueled the nation’s current economic mess. Chicago Tribune **

It would seem that regulations were fine but one of the democrats at the helm wasnt interested in following the regulations. What good are regulations when unethical political gamers refuse to play by the rules?

Letting Go of Life

by OneVike

golden-retriever.jpg When I took our dog Hershee to the vet today for her yearly checkup and shots, there was a gentleman who brought his old dog in to be put to sleep. As I watched him carry his old dog to the room where the veterinarian would do his job I looked down at Hershee and wondered how I would handle the task of taking her on that one way journey. I realized then how hard it is for some of us to let go of life.

There are myriads of reasons why people may get a dog and anyone who has ever owned one has their own unique story of how they ended up with theirs. In today’s society we have gotten so attached to our dogs that they have literally become members of the family. Back in the very early days of civilization we used our dogs primarily for hunting and protection, we loved our dogs, but we never quite made them a part of the family.

Post Scripts Featured In New Book

Post Scripts scored a first (at least for the ER blogs) and got a little recognition from an academic book publisher. The company and the PS/author signed an agreement today to use some of our work in a new library reference book, titled, Crime and Punishment. About 7000 books will be printed in both hard and soft cover and they are destined for college and public libraries from coast to coast. Anonymous PS co-writer said, “Maybe that small number won’t get us on any best seller list, but it’s gratifying to know that our work will be used to educate others.” The book comes out in September. Sales are expected to gross about $375,000 annually.

SAVING THE REPUBLICAN PARTY OF CALIFORNIA

By Jack Lee

CSMRSTATESEAL.jpgLet’s face it, the Republican Party in California has tanked and they didn’t get that way in just the last election. This has been a long, slow process of erosion that can be traced to a lack of… action, vision and inspired leadership. In short the Republicans whimped out and failed to live up to their own idealism and it got em tossed!

elephant.jpgFor too many years the GOP gambled that they could spend a little time doing minor tweaks on a few key issues, then spin this to the public as meaningful legislation while spending the bulk of the time in session on special interest legislation. Placating the special interests brings in the cash and this is what they thought would be enough to win elections and keep them in power forever. This was an unwritten doctrine that relied too much on campaign rhetoric and too little on decisive action while in office. And it worked for a time, but you know the old adage, “You can fool some of the people, some of the time….” and eventually this political ponzi scheme failed and voters demanded retribution. This fall from grace began back with the 1992 election and the GOP in California has been losing ground ever since, and sadly, so has the State.

Fannie & Fred Execs to Get Bonuses

Posted by Tina

** Fannie and Freddie are paying out those bonuses anyway regardless of Barney Franks demands and the populist furor over AIGs bonus payouts. Frank, the chairman of the Financial Services Committee, sent a letter Friday to James Lockhart, the federal regulator overseeing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, asking him to rescind retention bonuses of at least $1 million planned for four top executives over the next two years. *** But in letter obtained by POLITICO, Lockhart tells Frank theres a great risk of key employees walking away if they dont pay out the promised bonuses. These Fannie and Freddie employee retention programs were established because federal officials believed top executives will play a critical role in ensuring the successful turnaround of the companies. – Politico ** (emphasis mine)

Animals Have Feelings Too!

Posted by Jack

In 2003, police in Warwickshire, England, opened a garden shed and found a whimpering, cowering dog. It had been locked in the shed and abandoned. It was dirty and malnourished, and had clearly been abused.

In an act of kindness, the police took the dog, which was a greyhound female, to the nearby Nuneaton and Warwickshire Wildlife Sanctuary known as a willing haven for animals abandoned, orphaned or otherwise in need.

Geoff and the other sanctuary staff went to work with two aims: to restore the dog to full health, and to win her trust. It took several weeks, but eventually both goals were achieved.

brambles1.jpgThey named her Jasmine, and they started to think about finding her an adoptive home.

The dog had other ideas. No-one remembers now how it began, but Jasmine started welcoming all animal arrivals at the sanctuary. It wouldn’t matter if it was a puppy, a fox cub, a rabbit or, probably, a rhinoceros, Jasmine would peer into the box or cage and, where possible, deliver a welcoming lick.
