Media Bias, Prosecutorial Misconduct and Matters of Ethics

by Tina Grazier

“The public cannot be too curious concerning the characters of public men.” – Samuel Adams, letter to James Warren, November 4, 1775

You remember Ted Stevens, the Republican Senator from Alaska? The federal case against him was widely publicized, how could anyone forget! Stevens was convicted of a low-grade felony for failure to list on his Senate disclosure forms gifts and renovation work on his home. The sensational case was rushed toward prosecution, and in the process his reputation trashed, during the Obama/McCain presidential campaign. Recently this case has come under scrutiny under allegations of prosecutorial misconduct.

Prosecution of the much more serious charges against Democrat Representative William Jefferson were subject to much delay after he came under investigation in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina. He was eventually indicted by a Federal Grand Jury June 4, 2007 on sixteen charges related to corruption. Jeffersons trial, originally set to begin on Dec. 2, 2008, was postponed until after the 2008 December 6 general election in Louisiana’s 2nd congressional district.

Obama Sides With Bush on Detainees

Posted by Tina

** Washington – President Obama sided with the Bush administration Friday, saying detainees in Afghanistan have no constitutional rights. In a two-sentence court filing, the Justice Department said it agreed that detainees at Bagram Airfield cannot use U.S. courts to challenge their detention. The filing shocked human rights attorneys. (Snip) The Supreme Court last summer gave al-Qaeda and Taliban suspects held at the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the right to challenge their detention. AP **

SMOKE EM IF YA GOT EM

flag1a.jpg

abruce.jpgand just remember, the more you smoke, the more money becomes available for childrens health care. A bill now signed into law provides for spending an additional $32.8 BILLION on the State Childrens Health Insurance Program (SCHIP.)

Wheres the money coming from to pay for it? Lawmakers generated the extra revenue by increasing the federal tobacco tax. The bill (now signed into law) boosts the federal excise tax on a pack of cigarettes to $1.01 a pack. That means an awful lot of smokers wont be able to afford the habit anymore and theyll have to be replaced by new smokers.

In the original stimulus plan, on page 61, it included 75 MILLION dollars for smoking cessation programs. So, the one hand, we have the politicians introducing bills to try to get people to STOP smoking, while on the other hand, encouraging people to smoke MORE to pay for childrens health care, yet adding exorbitant taxes to make it more difficult.

On the one hand, were told smoking and second hand smoke kills while on the other, were encouraging people to smoke in order to pay the bills for children health care insurance. While smokers are encouraged to keep lighting up for the sake of the children, politicians write laws so lawyers can sue tobacco companies, making the price go up, which discourages people from smoking, and lessens the amount of revenue being generated.

For smokers that can still afford the habit, they find it increasingly difficult to find a place to light up. How do they expect people to run up all that lovely revenue if they cant smoke?

So, for the time being, smoke em if you can afford em, and can find a safe AND legal place to light up. Just remember, the more you smoke, the more money will be generated FOR THE CHILDREN.

STOCKHOLDERS FEAR FEDS WILL NATIONALIZE BANKS

Posted by Jack Lee

DollarWings2.jpg NEW YORK (Reuters) – Bank of America Corp and Citigroup Inc shares plummeted for a sixth straight day on Friday, hammered by fears that the U.S. government could nationalize the banks, wiping out shareholders.

Bank of America shares were down 19 percent to $3.20 in early trading, their lowest level since 1984, while Citigroup shares fell 20 percent to $2, their lowest price since the early 1990s.

Both stocks have lost more than 90 percent of their value in the last year.

“It’s a clear sign that the markets are expecting a high probability of them being nationalized,” said Mike Holland, founder of Holland & Co. “The clear expectation is that shareholders would effectively be wiped out.”

The KBW Financial index was down 6.8 percent to 20.42, with Wells Fargo Co shares down 11.6 percent to $10.60, and J.P.Morgan Chase & Co shares down 6 percent to $19.39.

Bank of America Hit’s Record Low

by Jack Lee

Have you ever seen a crisis where government didn’t come away with more power and more of your money? The ultimate power grab would be nationalizing our major banks. This fear has certainly been reflected in the share price of Bank of America Stock (symbol BAC on the NYSE).

In 1946 my thoughful parents opened a saving account for me and I’ve been a B of A customer ever since. It pains me to think this great institution could be taken over by the government quicker than you can say, “Good-bye sweet America”.

big.jpg
This chart shows how 30 years of careful, continuous progress has been virtually wiped out in 6 months time.

I’ve feared for over the last month that pension funds would make a run on the banks in a sudden divestment and this would only compound our already catatrosphic level of financial problems. A government run pension fund must divest from a stock that doesn’t meet certain criteria for stability, such as when a share price goes under $5. We’re well under that price now and if it stays there for long BAC stock could be delisted from the NYSE and pounded down to a penny stock. I know this is hard to believe, the nations 3rd largest bank in the most rapid decline in its long history. In the past 52 weeks the stock has dropped from $43 a share to sub $3.

Nationalizing banks is a nightmare scenario that many local Chicoans can barely bring themselves to think about, yet Wall Street is telling us there is a high probability it could happen. BAC is off about 21% today. Imagine, 21% of the entire worth of BAC stock, evaporated in just a few hours? It’s hard to wrap your brain around that one, this was a quality blue chip company in a very solid sector, but then so many things have changed so much recently, it’s almost unfathomable how much has changed.

Government is on a spending frenzy with more pork projects than I’ve ever seen in my life, the nation is about to double it’s total accumulated debt from many past decades past in one year. And what if this spending isn’t working, is this the time the feds will nationalize our banks? Will Bank of America survive? Will America survive?
What’s next for us heaven only knows, but if you believe our President, the worst is yet to come.

Rush’s Letter to the President

06limbaugh_1-190.jpegPosted by Tina

The following is an open letter Rush Limbaugh has penned to ask our president an important question. The subject is free speech as it pertains to the use of our airwaves and specfically, talk radio. It’s an important topic and deserves our attention. I hope you will follow the link and read the entire superb article which begins…

** Dear President Obama: I have a straightforward question, which I hope you will answer in a straightforward way: Is it your intention to censor talk radio through a variety of contrivances, such as “local content,” “diversity of ownership,” and “public interest” rules — all of which are designed to appeal to populist sentiments but, as you know, are the death knell of talk radio and the AM band? **

Mr. President, Keep the Airwaves Free – As a former law professor, surely you understand the Bill of Rights.” – Rush Limbaugh, Wall Street Journal

Lest you think Rush Limbaugh is just being paranoid consider the following articles and reports taken from the web…

Looking for a Good State with Low Taxes and Lots of Freedom?

mapofjefferson1.jpg A truly free state based on Jeffersonian ideals was a movement that was started decades ago. The State of Jefferson was really taking shape in 1941. In fact, you can see a proposed map and lots of other info on www.JeffersonState.org . Unfortunately, the movement was cut short by the patriotic organizers when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor.

Recently, a groundswell of support has rekindled. A growing number of Americans are fed up with the actions of the government in D.C. Many Californians have had it with the hypocritical and petty fighting of our dysfunctional legislators in Sacramento that are bankrupting and ruining our state. We have a number of Jeffersonian activists and organizers in most of the counties on the old map shown above. In fact, there will be a meeting to really get things moving in our local counties at 4pm on Sunday, March 1st at the Chico Main library. Anyone who wants personal freedom and a truly constitutional government is welcome to come.
