Great Pitch – Success Would Mean Less Government

Posted by Tina

** A top aide says Barack Obama’s inauguration address will call on Americans to embrace a new era of responsible behavior – in government and in business. *** Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s choice for chief of staff, says Obama’s speech Tuesday will ask the nation to reject the “culture of anything goes.” *** Emanuel says Obama will ask Americans to restore a national value system that honors responsibility and accountability. The Buffalo News **

I think our next president means well. I think he has a strong desire to inspire our nation…to unite our nation…to see our nation thrive. I don’t think government mandates, edicts, and expensive programs will work the magic he’s hoping for…but I’d be happy if proved wrong.

Shameless Pitch

** Barack Obama has only four years to save the world. That is the stark assessment of Nasa scientist and leading climate expert Jim Hansen who last week warned only urgent action by the new president could halt the devastating climate change that now threatens Earth. Crucially, that action will have to be taken within Obama’s first administration, he added. Soaring carbon emissions are already causing ice-cap melting and threaten to trigger global flooding, widespread species loss. **

Couldnt be that Hansen is engaging in a shameless pitch for part of that stimulus package could it?

The Geesepeace Solution

Heres a quirky little postscript to the hero pilot story in the news. It involves a bit of Congressional pork from 2004:

Did an Earmark Bring Down the US Airways Flight, by Greg Pollowitz Planet Gore, NRO

** January 22, 2004 – US Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that Congress has passed $200,000 in federal funds for the US Fish and Wildlife Service to implement a Geesepeace program that works to alleviate the Canada geese overpopulation problem that threatens the health of local residents and the environment. **

Mr. Pollowitz makes an excellent point, I think an investigation into what was or wasn’t done over the years to control the geese is in order. If environmental concerns overrode passenger safety then that’s something that needs to be debated in light of yesterday’s miracle.

Representative Boehner Asks

Strange Days on Capitol Hill – Republicans for Obama, Democrats unsure, by Stephen F. Hayes – Weekly Standard

** “I just can’t tell you how shocked I am at what we’re seeing. It’s clear that they’re moving on this path along the flawed notion that we can borrow and spend our way to prosperity.” *** Boehner asked how NASA was going to spend $400 million fighting global warming, if ACORN would qualify for community development grants, and whether federal money should be used for waterslides. He wondered why taxpayers were providing handouts to universities with billion-dollar endowments. *** “I want to know how digital TV coupons are going to stimulate our economy,” he said, pointing out a Democratic proposal to help citizens who still watch television using an antenna convert to digital next month. “I just read last week that 94 percent of the people who needed a converter for their digital–to receive their digital signal–had already gotten it. And so if there’s only 6 percent of American TVs that still need these, how could we possibly spend $650 million on this?” ** (emphasis mine)

Thank you Rep. Boehner…we should all be asking these questions.

Army Field Manual Techniques Not Sufficient

Intel director backs harsh methods – McConnell says Army manual lacking, by Barbara Slavin and Eli Lake The Washington Times

** National Intelligence Director Michael McConnell warned Friday that interrogation techniques listed as permitted in the U.S. Army Field Manual are not sufficient to protect the security of the United States. *** The retired admiral, who is leaving his post with the change in administrations but will remain an adviser to the new president, was reacting to comments by incoming officials that the Obama administation will bar harsh interrogation measures, such as waterboarding. *** Eric H. Holder Jr., the nominee for attorney general, testified Thursday at his confirmation hearing that waterboarding is torture and would be barred under his leadership. *** On Sunday, Mr. Obama told ABC’s “This Week,” that “if our top Army commanders feel comfortable with interrogation techniques that are squarely within the boundaries of rule of law, our Constitution and international standards, then those are things that we should be able to do.” **

The Begining of Oppression

by Mike

Re: Gun Sales (Part 2)

How can the 2nd Amendment be honored if the people of the country cannot have the same advantages of the government, in order to keep the government in check?

This is the beginning of the oppression of the people by the government. The American people are obligated to keep the government in check so that a democracy can grow without collusion and influence.

Some argue that the 2nd Amendment interprets the right to keep and bear arms simply as a means to hunt and sport. This is not the case. Government put it there as a fail safe against its own degradation. This will be eroded away with continued Gun Control legislation.

The American people need to stop being passive in the face of growing cultural influence to “grant special trust and confidence in our government”. WAKE UP AMERICA!!!
