AIG Clarifies Agent Meeting – Market Watch

* NEW YORK, Oct 08, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) — American International Group, Inc. (AIG) Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Edward M. Liddy sent a letter today to U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry M. Paulson to clarify the circumstances of a business event held by an AIG subsidiary which was discussed during an October 7, 2008 hearing by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. *** The event, mischaracterized as an “Executive Retreat,” was held by one of AIG’s insurance subsidiaries for independent life insurance agents, not for AIG employees. These agents were top business producers for the company, and of the more than 100 attendees, only 10 were employees of the AIG subsidiary who were there to represent their company. No AIG executives from headquarters attended. The meeting was planned months before the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s loan to AIG. *** In his letter, Mr. Liddy assured Secretary Paulson that AIG now faces very different challenges, and “that we owe our employees and the American public new standards and approaches.” Mr. Liddy assured Secretary of the Treasury Paulson that AIG is “reevaluating the costs of all aspects of our operations in light of the new circumstances in which we are all operating.” *** Mr. Liddy concluded, that “AIG is focused on doing what is necessary to address our capital structure, repay the Fed credit facility and emerge as a healthy global insurer. In the meantime, our insurance businesses continue to operate normally and satisfy the needs of our policy holders.” *

Congress Eyeing Your 401K

Posted by Tina

A look at what the Democrat Congress might have in mind if given unchecked power this November is revealed in a proposal offered today regarding your 401K. Progressives dont consider the money you earn and save as your propertyit ALL belongs to them ! YOU should feel priviledged to turn it over to them as a contribution and be happy with the crumbs they toss back (under the table where the dogs eat, natch).

Congress mulls major 401(k) changes, By Sara Hansard

* A wide range of sweeping changes to the 401(k) system were proposed Tuesday at a hearing on how the market crisis has devastated retirement savings plans. *** Chief among them was eliminating $80 billion in tax savings for higher-income people enrolled in 401(k) retirement savings plans. *** This was suggested by the chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor. *** With respect to the 401(k), it appears to be a plan that is not really well-devised for the changes in the market, Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., said. *** Weve invested $80 billion into subsidizing this activity, he said, referring to tax breaks allowed for 401(k) contributions and savings. *** With savings rates going down, what do we have to start to think about in Congress of whether or not we want to continue and invest that $80 billion for a policy that is not generating what we say it should? Mr. Miller said. *** Congress should let workers trade their 401(k) assets for guaranteed retirement accounts made up of government bonds, suggested Teresa Ghilarducci, an economics professor at The New School for Social Research in New York. *** When workers collected Social Security, the guaranteed retirement account would pay an inflation-adjusted annuity under her plan. *** The way the government now encourages 401(k) plans is to spend $80 billion in tax breaks, which goes to the highest-income earners, Ms. Ghilarducci said.
That simply results in transferring money from taxed savings accounts to untaxed accounts, she said. *** If we implement automatic [individual retirement accounts] or if we expand the 401(k) system, all were doing is adding to this inefficiency, Ms. Ghilarducci said. *

Note to the public: The taxes are deferred not eliminated as the language suggests. The money is taxed as income when it is taken out of the 401K

NOTE TO CONGRESS…IT’S NOT YOUR MONEY!

Illegal Nobels?

OSLO – The Nobel Peace Prizes awarded to Mother Teresa and Al Gore violated the terms of Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel’s will that created the awards and so are illegal, a lawyer who has written a book on the subject said today. Only 45 per cent of the Nobel Peace Prizes attributed since World War II are in line with the spirit and terms of Nobel’s will, according to Norwegian lawyer Fredrik Heffermehl, author of “Nobel’s Will.” – Agence France-Presse

Obama’s “New Party” Membership

Posted by Tina

The American people are being told not to worry about Barack Obamas ties with radical left wing organizations and persons. Questions into Obamas past associations are dismissed as partisan efforts to smear the opposition candidate. But what if the concerns are legitimate? Shouldn’t the public know about his associations before they vote? I think we deserve to know and since the media has a slanted political groove I feel compelled to help them out.

We begin over at NewsBusters with a pertinent contrast:

* The mainstream media thought that the membership of Todd Palin, who is not a candidate for any office, in the Alaska Independence Party important enough to report in such outlets as the Los Angeles Times, MSNBC, and the New York Times, among others. So now that Barack Obama’s membership in the far left New Party has been unearthed, will they report his membership in that Socialist organization? – NewsBusters *

My guess is they willl not.

ACORN

Planting Seeds of Disaster ACORN, Barack Obama, and the Democratic party, by Stanley Kurtz

* Youve got only a couple thousand bucks in the bank. Your job pays you dog-food wages. Your credit history has been bent, stapled, and mutilated. You declared bankruptcy in 1989. Dont despair: You can still buy a house. So began an April 1995 article in the Chicago Sun-Times that went on to direct prospective home-buyers fitting this profile to a group of far-left community organizers called ACORN, for assistance. In retrospect, of course, encouraging customers like this to buy homes seems little short of madness. *** At the time, however, that 1995 Chicago newspaper article represented something of a triumph for Barack Obama. That same year, as a director at Chicagos Woods Fund, Obama was successfully pushing for a major expansion of assistance to ACORN, and sending still more money ACORNs way from his post as board chair of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge. Through both funding and personal-leadership training, Obama supported ACORN. And ACORN, far more than weve recognized up to now, had a major role in precipitating the subprime crisis.

How Political are Polling Numbers?

Posted by Tina

Polls make a news story. During elections they can help drive momentum. So what do we make of polls that claim one candidate has an edge over his opponent? A look back in time reveals an interesting picture.

An article dated September 14, 2000 by William Saletan, Why Bush Is Toast declared:

* Since Labor Day, the media have released about 20 polls on the presidential race. Three show a dead heat, one shows George W. Bush leading by a single percentage point, and the rest show Al Gore leading by one to 10 points. In the latest polls, Gore leads by an average of five points. It’s fashionable at this stage to caution that “anything can happen,” that Bush is “retooling,” and that the numbers can turn in Bush’s favor just as easily as they turned against him. But they can’t. The numbers are moving toward Gore because fundamental dynamics tilt the election in his favor. The only question has been how far those dynamics would carry him. Now that he has passed Bush, the race is over. *

Is It Obama or His Race?

by Jack Lee

Imagine for a moment a well educated, articulate junior Senator with very little legislative history. Is he Presidential material? Some would he has that potential, but hes not ready, not just yet. He needs more experience so we can fairly evaluate his ideas and his leadership. Lets see how he can gather support when needed and where he places his priorities on the kind of bills he endorses or creates. And most of us would think this is right and reasonable.

Now let’s view him as a black Senator. Suddenly everything changes. People are more likely to be proud of him because he is black and think warm and fuzzy thoughts of what he must have overcome to be a Senator and assume many wonderful things about his character and ability. Of course this is a form of racism, but it’s an acceptable form racism, especially among the affirmative action types.

A white guy under the same circumstances won’t get that level of instant and unearned adoration unless it comes from the Klan.

The black Senator can belong to the black caucus, but the white counterpart wouldn’t dare belong to a white caucus because, well, isn’t it obvious? It’s just plain wrong; a caucus membership should not be about race!

Now when it comes to running for election the black candidate is almost assuredly going to get the black vote and he also gets the white liberal, democrat, vote too. Will the white candidate get the same mileage off his race? Not likely, because that would be… evil and bigoted.

There are enormous numbers of whites who are absolutely desperate to elect a black person to anything, but most especially to the Presidency because they are trying to expunge that original sin, the sin of slavery in early America. They are tormented by this fact of our history and they have carried this guilt and shame for generations and they want relief! That relief can only come by promoting black people. They have their agenda fixed on a persons race first and a distant second on them being capable and qualified.

In todays politics, marginally capable black people stand a far better chance of being elected than a more qualified white, Asian or Hispanic person because a vast number of liberal Americans embrace another form of racism due to white guilt.

The issue of race has kept the GOP from going after Obama like they would any other candidate. So many areas in Obamas background are off limits because of this and for good reason. Nobody, including Republicans, want to be called racist. They have held back attacking Obama on many levels, from his limited experience to his associations with shall we say, some very odd people that if it were anybody else the GOP would have had a field day exploiting!

In todays world most people would rather be called a rapist than a racist and this is one of main reasons how Obama has climbed to power as a marginally qualified candidate. It’s not right, but that’s just the way it is and you know it. (Now I guess I have to expect to be called a racist because I just told the truth)

Razing Fuld, wink, wink?

“One Democrat even said, ‘I wonder how he sleeps at night.'”

Democrats attack their benefactor, by Randall Hoven – American Thinker

* Henry Waxman waxed righteously indignant, as the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee grilled Richard Fuld of Lehman Brothers, deploring his $480 million in pay the last 8 years. *** It turns out Richard Fuld of Lehman Brothers gave $151,300 in disclosed political donations in recent years . How does it break down? *** $45,000 to the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. *** $10,000 to the Democratic National Committee Services Corp. *** $4,600 to Hillary Clinton, $4,600 to Chris Dodd and $2,300 to Barack Obama. *** Other contributions to Democrats: Dick Gephardt, Joe Lieberman, Jack Reed, Erskine Bowles, Joseph Driscoll, Nita Lowey, Bob Torricelli, Frank Lautenberg, Brendan Byrne, Jon Corzine, Bill Bradley, Chuck Schumer, Ted Kennedy, Ed Markey, and Dianne Feinstein. *** My arithmetic says Republicans received well under 10% of Mr. Fuld’s political contributions. *** When I searched OpenSecrets for all contributions from Lehman Brothers, the page returned a fatal error because the number of contributions exceeded 1000. So then I searched only for donations from Lehman Brothers to Barack Obama. The total was $322,075. *

This tangled web just gets stickier and stickier. Democrats and Wall Street…who knew?

WALL STREET DROPS 800 POINTS – RECOVERS SOME

ws1.jpg NEW YORK (Oct. 6) – Wall Street suffered through another traumatic session Monday, with the Dow Jones industrials plunging as much as 800 points and setting a new record for a one-day point drop as investors despaired that the credit crisis would take a heavy toll around the world. The Dow also fell below 10,000 for the first time since 2004, and all the major indexes fell more than 7 percent.

The catalyst for the selling was the growing realization that the Bush administration’s $700 billion rescue plan and steps taken by other governments won’t work quickly to unfreeze the credit markets. Global banks, hobbled by wrong-way bets on mortgage securities, remain starved for cash as credit has dried up.
