MARKET FALLS AGAIN, 449 PTS! – Is this the time to panic?

Posted by Jack

Yeah, it was another bloody day on Wall Street. But, I took a look at some of the stocks I bought recently and then I compared them to the best price one would have paid for them in just the last 6 months. The 15 well diversified stocks I picked were all rated 3-4 stars by S-P, so these are not dogs; these are good quality stocks on the NewYork Exchange and they had a total value of $499,600 in that 6 month window. Today, thanks to fall of Lehman Bros., Fannie, Freddie, Bear Stearns and now AIG, the value of those stocks is a mere $154,000. That represents about a 70% drop and this is not unusual for many portfolios, but it also hints at bargain basement prices and that final big sell-off before the market begins to recover.

Desperate Feminists – Desperate Times

300px-Feminist_Suffrage_Parade_in_New_York_City%2C_1912.jpegPosted by Tina

With Tina Fey’s Saturday Night Live portrayal of Sarah Palin, U. S. feminist-liberalism has come round to define one of its core beliefs: The Bimbo Doctrine. Any political woman who doesn’t sound and look like either a cynical wisecracking babbling babe on The View or a frowsy academic from the Council on Foreign Relations is, under the Bimbo Doctrine, two frying pans and a bikini away from being Miss America. – Terrence Corcoran, National Post (Canada)

With that hilarious yet pointed observation in mind consider the following:

State Budget a Sham Arnold Should Veto

State budget relies on sham revenue, by Dan Walters

Remember those Democrats who promised to end years of deficit borrowing and bookkeeping trickery with a straightforward budget that raised taxes to cover obligations? They embraced a get-out-of-town scheme that’s the antithesis of common sense budgeting, and hid most of the details until the last minute. *** Remember those Republicans who made noise about not raising taxes, even temporarily,

Chico City Council Puts Price Fixing on the Agenda

by Jack Lee

There is an old saying, “the price of freedom is eternal vigilance”. To me that means we must be wary of all things big and small that could in any way serve as an impedance to freedom. And that my friends is why I went to our city council tonight.

1292-ist1_3994351-gavel-flag.jpgAs you may already know our Mayor, Andy Holcombe, was determined to push “Price fixing” on the citizens of little Chico and call it fair, actually he calls it a “Fair Trade Town policy”. Well, I’ve got news for the Mayor, another old saying says, “A rose by any other name….Is still price fixing!”

The approving council members say it has yet to be determined how this proposal will read if adopted, so tonight was simply a vote to agendize it or not.

The first rebel to be called was me and Iall they wanted to hear was whether I was for or against the so-called “Fair Trade Town” concept, and I said of course I was against it and it looked like I was not going to have a

(Pelosi) Drill? Oooops, Sorry…No…Not Really!

Yesterday I reported that Speaker Nancy Pelosi had finally caved on the drilling issue and would back a bill to allow offshore drilling on both coasts. The little vixen is up to her usual tricks, however, and the bill is totally unsupportable. As Marlo Lewis has said over at Planet Gore, “…her proposed compromise is a cynical ploy that no self-respecting supply-sider will touch with a 2,000-foot oil rig.”:

Immigration Laws A Law Enforcement Perspective

by John Freitas, Homicide Investigator, LAPD, RET.

(Mr. Freitas responds to another poster regarding the ACLU Article shown further down. He makes several excellent points well worth considering. The post was so good it was placed here as a featured article)

la.jpg“Penn. Mayor Lou Barletta … authored a City ordinance that called for the enforcement of US laws, ….”

Libby, I don’t know the cause of this, but I can tell you when I was working Los Angeles, we had a series of Homicides tied to the Mara Salvatrucha 13 gang. We worked up enough evidence to obtain a series of search/arrest warrants. MS 13 had a large membership consisting of Illegal Aliens, when we did large warrants like this, we brought INS along, (I know they are called something else now)

We werent deporting people reporting crimes or contacted as witnesses, hell, we needed them for court. But La Raza came to the aid of criminal gang members, who were here illegally, and the City went along with it. Tell me Libby, if you could prevent one murder of an innocent person, would you?

La Raza pitched a fit; the liberal City Council precluded us from enforcing immigration laws or even calling Immigration agents. My feeling was that it was an unlawful order, but it was done. So you are, again wrong, sometimes political meddling prevents laws from being enforced. You are right; it is nonsense that an action like this should be necessary. But you are wrong that it would never be necessary. And if there is hypocrisy, isn’t it on the part of the one who would make this necessary?

Oh, and by the way MS 13 is now nationwide. Wouldn’t it have been nice if some of the compassion for their victims in Southern Cal, could have prevented this murderous gang from becoming so powerful?

Fixing a Problem…

…requires that you first acknowledge the source of the problem.

The melt down, as the financial failures are being called, can be a learning experience for Americans or it can signal yet another round of government fixes. Usually the latter leads to greater opportunities for fraud and deception as well as a fat premium to be paid by consumers and taxpayers. Investors Business Daily has an excellent article that offers some historical background on the subject and an alternative explanation for the current troubles in the financial markets.

The Real Culprits In This Meltdown – IBD

Obama in a statement yesterday blamed the shocking new round of subprime-related bankruptcies on the free-market system, and specifically the “trickle-down” economics of the Bush administration, which he tried to gig opponent John McCain for wanting to extend. *** But it was the Clinton administration, obsessed with multiculturalism, that dictated where mortgage lenders could lend, and originally helped create the market for the high-risk subprime loans now infecting like a retrovirus the balance sheets of many of Wall Street’s most revered institutions.

Drill…Drill…OK, Go Ahead and…Drill!

4489-19011.jpegby Tina Grazier

It could be the single digit approval ratings of the Democrat controlled Congress. It could be the overwhelming cry of the American people for relief from high gas prices and assurances that we will move forward on energy policies in a balanced and thoughtfull manner. It could even be that the new Republican VP candidate made quite a splash in her debut…but most likely it’s the whispers that democrats on the Hill are in danger of losing their jobs when they thought they had a slam dunk going. Whatever it is the following is good news for the American people:

Congressional Democrats, balancing political reality against a policy they have long opposed, are on the cusp of approving legislation that would open the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to oil drilling as close as 50 miles offshore. With votes scheduled this week in the House and Senate, Democrats have essentially given up defending the current ban on drilling within 200 miles offshore along both coasts. – Washington Post

We won’t hold our breath but we might consider taking bets!

SEC To Blunt Short Sellers

An AP story posted on Yahoo offers small comfort to those with big losses…

“SEC plans measures against short-selling, by Marcy Gordon

WASHINGTON – With Wall Street engulfed in crisis, the Securities and Exchange Commission is planning measures to rein in aggressive forms of short-selling that were blamed in part for the demise of Lehman Brothers and which some fear could be turned against other vulnerable companies. *** During emergency meetings between federal
