Waging Quiet War

by Tina Grazier

When we think of war our minds go to extreme images…explosions, gunfire, burned out buildings and towns made mostly of rubble, tanks, air and sea craft, weapons of all kinds and of course terrible injury and death. But we also need to be aware of the quieter versions of war…war being waged within our own borders…battles for control of institutions and minds:

“Listening In
Congress, wiretapping and Ma Bell.”
– Saturday, September 8, 2007 12:01 a.m. EDT

When the German government announced arrests this week in a terrorist plot against American and German targets inside Germany, one telling detail got little notice: Two of the suspects were identified, in part, based on telephone conversations intercepted by American intelligence. *** This week, by unhappy coincidence, the House Judiciary Committee began hearings on the National Security Agency’s al Qaeda wiretapping program. That program was given a six-month reprieve last month. But Democrats in Congress are trying to prevent a further extension, if they can muster the votes to oppose a program that continues to protect American lives, la this week in Germany.

Please choose wisely in the voting booth next November.
