Super Tuesday Approaches!

A Barack Obama surge has wiped out Democratic White House foe Hillary Clinton’s once-gaping opinion poll leads on the eve of “Super Tuesday,” a historic national nominating showdown.

The former first lady, voice almost a whisper and fighting off a cough, wiped a tear from her eye Monday, as she appeared at Yale University, where her political journey started as an earnest 1970s student in bell-bottom pants.

“Well I said I would not tear up, already we are not exactly on the path,” said Clinton, 60, as she set off on a gruelling final-day campaign swing to battle Obama for votes in northeastern Connecticut and Massachusetts.

Obama, 46, boosted by new polls showing him chasing down Clinton, even in her strongholds, meanwhile headlined another high-octane rally in New Jersey, a battleground state where he is breathing down his rival’s neck.

The cliffhanger Democratic race contrasted with signs that Senator John McCain would all but settle the Republican nominating fight Tuesday, to complete one of the most staggering comebacks in recent US political history.
