Construction hasn’t yet begun on the first leg of the California high-speed rail project and estimated costs are exploding!

SFGate

Environmental reports released Tuesday show the first segment of the line in the Central Valley will cost between $10 billion and $13.9 billion, far more than the 2009 estimate of $7.1 billion. ** State Sen. Doug La Malfa, R-Willows, said he is preparing legislation that would ask voters to reconsider the project in June 2012. Voters authorized $9 billion in bonds for the project in 2008, although most of those bonds have not yet been sold.

By the time this “boondoggle” is completed the ticket price from LA to SF will rival the cost of a trip to the moon.

Hmmm….arranging such a trip for its backers and supporters might be the cheaper way to go. In fact, it could work out as a win/win! The sane would be rid of wasteful spenders and they would be spared the global warming disaster they claim will soon be visited upon us…where’s Ralph Kramden when you need him?

If you get a chance to vote no on this expensive project take a page from Kramden…BANG ZOOOM!

I can’t hear the words “high speed rail” without thinking of Professor Harold Hill:

It always starts with some out-of-town Jasper. Then one-two-three – you got TROUBLE!

They put a “light rail” in Sacramento – only the state workers used it, and it jacked up Downtown traffic roughly every 28 minutes. And the tracks were a real hazard for pedestrians and cyclists. It was a huge train, just running alongside cars, who were supposed to get the hell out of that center lane when they looked in their rear view and spotted a train. Too weird. Imagine this:

Everywhere they have trains crossing crowded urban areas, they have terrible accidents. When will they figure – trains and crowds of human beings don’t mix. And speed kills, by the way.

Oh, and the money – puh-leeeze!
