“Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate — we can not consecrate — we can not hallow — this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us — that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion — that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain — that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom — and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” – Abraham Lincoln, November 19, 1863

Abraham Lincoln delivered this famous speech 150 Years ago today. We may not be fighting in the fields and hollows with swords and breechloaders but we are a sorely divided nation. This speech is as timely today as it was in Lincoln’s day. The words and sentiment have long endured; let us hope the cause of liberty continues to endure.

    Obama refused invitation to speak at the ceremony extended to him over the past year. Gettysburg, PA is a 20 minute helicopter ride from DC.

    He also omitted the words, “under God” from his portion of the documentary by Ken Burns.

    Yes Peggy, I read yesterday he had turned down the invitation. It would be a tough gig but it really is an important event that cried out for the President’s presence.

    I commented on the Gettysburg address challenge article about his leaving God out of his recorded version of the address and asked…hasn’t he done this before? (Made a meatloaf for dinner in the interim)

    In searching for the answer I discovered he has. But it’s not just by Obama but also Diane Sawyer and Harry Reid, among others. The omission in 2008 was in recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. This is not a particularly big deal because the words reflect a personal conviction. An atheist can swear allegiance without recognizing God…it would be meaningless if he left it in. But Obama claims to be Christian so his omission raises questions.

    The Gettysburg Address is another matter. These are not his words nor do they represent an oath. He has an obligation to recite the address as delivered, doesn’t he?

    I also discovered an article in the LA Times that is of interest:

    America’s most irritating atheist is at again. That tiresome Michael Newdow and a bunch of other anti-God types have filed suit to bar prayer and references to God at President-elect Barack Obama’s swearing-in on Jan. 20. Newdow also filed lawsuits to remove prayer from President George W. Bush’s inauguration ceremonies in 2001 and 2005, and you may also remember him as the crank who tried to get the phrase “under God” eliminated from the pledge of allegiance.

    They never stop…I don’t know what to think of Obama’s omissions.

    I understand there are four copies of Lincoln’s address, two with the “under God” and two without. His choice to leave it out brings one to ask why. Especially if he is a Christian as he claims to be.

    I’ve also changed how I feel about him not going to Gettysburg. I’m glad he didn’t, because I don’t think he’s worthy of standing where Honest Abe once stood.

    Lions and Tigers and Bears oh no! Who cares how another person recites something! One persons Religion is not the dictator. We are a country with the freedom to choose one’s religion. Freedom is not religious nut jobs dictating their beliefs.

    There are a few different copies of the Gettysburg address. So who cares ask ken Burns! We as citizens will not be dictated to.

    The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855–1931), who was a Baptist minister, a Christian socialist!

    LOL It was changed several times. Religion will not dictate to this country like the Middle East Does.

    Say the pledge written by the Christian socialist however ya want. I pledge to remove the Tea Party threats to our country and allow freedom of religion.

    Peggy, as I explained on the other article, Obama did not leave out the phrase “under God.” The draft he was given, which is believed by some to be the first, does not contain that phrase. There are five different drafts of the GA, and two do not contain the phrase “under God.” This information is readily available on the website of the Gettysburg Foundation, and could have easily been discovered by the Daily Caller if they had been interested in doing research on their claims before making them. But they’re clearly not.

    I think he plays golf an awful lot and if he has time for that and a basketball game in Oregon he has time to be at the 150th anniversary of the Gettysburg Address, especially since he made such a big deal about Lincoln early in his presidency.

    But in addition to that, as President of our nation he represents the people. It would be nice to have our President accept his leadership position. Whoever does his scheduling missed a great opportunity for him…maybe that should bother you.

    Still on the 150th anniversary I think it would have been a nice gesture to read the draft that Lincoln actually used and is recognized on his memorial.

    There are other republicans and democrats guilty as well however the Koch agenda, heritage Foundation, freedomworks, ALEC and other orgs are all on the same agenda to corporate rule.

    That is exactly why the Tea party is not interested in the TPP. Cause it creates a World court that is over the sovernighty of any country who signs it.

    So let’s enjoy the conversation and get to real truth and differences.

    The blogs used here are funded propaganda, Dick Army even busted Rush Limbaugh for reading freedom works commercials like news!

    The mere fact Tea Party will not accept true facts and is trained to talk past it all for an agenda is obvious. All truth is blocked.

    I find it unchristian like myself. Each to their own, just use facts and realize We are a diverse country and there are many religions here.

    That to push people into poverty after an unregulated market crash and deficit caused by starting 2 wars on a credit card at the same time giving tax cuts and a tax cut to move our jobs overseas is not right.

    Then blame those who lost their jobs, healthcare and are working in poverty.

    Jesus told me to help those people not persecute them.

    I get it you do not like Obama, any democrat, any progressive, well hate is not what Jesus teaches us.

    I am not an Obama fan but blocking any and every bill for the people and only wanting more tax cuts for the extremely rich who have turned congress into a rich dudes brokering house of laws is the end

    Bush also graciously said that Obama shouldn’t be criticized. I say graciously because Bush was viciously criticized by the left for most of his eight years and that includes President Obama who until recently has ungraciously continued to blame Bush for all of his problems.

    If the President can make time for golf and still meet his obligations as President I’m all for it. The President is under a great deal of pressure and needs time out.

    Events like these are planned at least a year in advance. Obama or one of his aids would have made this decision in advance. It’s a mystery. why would he not take advantage of this wonderful opportunity?

    Dewey, as I said above I personally didn’t care if he went, it was the citizens of Gettysburg who wanted him there and extended the invitation to him a year ago. According to the PA journalist in the below video Obama only had a couple of meetings and a speaking engagement with the WSJ very late in the afternoon.

    In other words it looks like he didn’t go because he didn’t want to. I just find this very strange since he has said he was a great admirer of Lincoln and even used The Lincoln Bible both times he was sworn in. And having his advisor try to explain his absence by saying he had to fix ObamaCare is laughable.

    Again, I’m glad he didn’t go. And now to find out he and his cronies “cooked the books” from the census bureau two months before the election so he could present a fictitious employment rate to steal the election from Romney.

    Bottom line is he could have been there if he wanted to. He obviously didn’t want to go. So be it. Move on.

    It really wouldn’t kill either of you to do some basic research before you make assumptions. Many historians believe that either the Nicolay or Hay copy, neither of which include the phrase “under God,” is the version Lincoln actually delivered. There is debate over this, but the fact is we just don’t know for sure. Obama may have very well been reading from the version of the speech that was delivered.

    I am really tired of uninformed criticism.

    This story represents neither a scandal nor a lie on Obama’s part. The only lie came from the conservative media you rely on who told you that Obama “ommitted” the phrase “under God” from his speech. Unless…could this be the work of Time Traveler Obama again? Is the scandal that he went back and deleted the phrase from the original drafts of the speech?

    Peggy, I decided to research your claims about the fake employment number. That accusation has apparently been made by one former Census worker. But according to the Census Bureau, he was fired in 2011, and thus would not have had any knowledge about the jobs report in Fall 2012.

    Reasonable people will see that and conclude that the guy is probably lying. Unreasonable people will see it as more evidence for their conspiracy theory. I already know which category you will fall into, Peggy.


    The U.S. Census Bureau said Tuesday that a source named in a New York Post story claiming it had “faked” unemployment data hasn’t worked at the Bureau since 2011.

    A Census spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that the Census Bureau employee quoted in the story, Julius Buckmon, has not worked there since August 2011. This was first reported by CNBC’s Steve Liesman.

    The Post story never mentions this fact. A spokesman for the Post didn’t immediately return a request for comment as to why.

    “We have no reason to believe this isn’t an isolated incident,” the Census spokesperson told Business Insider. “This was an employee who was willfully disobeying Census procedures and disobeying the law.”

    The spokesperson said that because of privacy laws, she couldn’t comment the reasons for a specific employee leaving the Bureau. But the spokesperson did say that when the Bureau discovers inappropriate activity, the matter is referred to the Department of Labor’s Inspector General. The field representative would be subject to disciplinary action if the IG finds any wrongdoing, including termination.

    The story never provided a specific timeframe for Buckmon’s employment at the Census Bureau. But the article painted the picture, citing Buckmon and anonymous sources, that Census employees have manipulated data that has gone into the monthly unemployment report.

    The report — titled “Census ‘faked’ 2012 election jobs report” — claims that employees conducting the household survey (the one that determines the unemployment rate) were pressured by higher-ups to fudge surveys to fill in data gaps when they could not get adequate response rates.

    Beyond Buckmon, the Post story cites an anonymous “knowledgeable source” who claimed that the data manipulation “escalated at the time President Obama was seeking reelection in 2012 and continues today.”

    This source is also responsible for the allegation that a weird-looking jobs report in September 2012 — which conservatives at the time suggested could have been intentionally manipulated — was “faked” to produce a decline in the unemployment rate from 8.1% in August to 7.8% in September.

    The Post story also cites confidential documents — but all of the issues cited from the documents are from 2010.

    The Census spokesperson said that the Bureau has more than 7,000 field representatives like Buckmon, so it would be close to impossible for one employee to have a significant effect on the overall report.

    Others, like Business Insider’s Joe Weisenthal, also pointed out issues with the Post’s story, like the fact that the September jobs report was very much on trend with the declining unemployment rate.”

    Ronald Reagan traveled 4,000 miles for the 40th anniversary of the Normandy invasion. I find it hard to believe he wouldn’t travel to Gettysburg if possible.

    Once again you are misrepresenting what I said. I corrected my first statement and said there were four copies. He had the choice to use the “under God” quote or not. His choosing to not is known as a tell.

    What I’m talking about was the eyewitness’ accounts presented the other day before the committee of what happened during the attack, which contradicts what was reported to us and the dead’s families by this administration.

    “State Department employees at the Benghazi compound knew they were in a death trap and made a series of radio distress calls to the CIA annex during the terror assault last year, according to congressional sources familiar with recent testimony on the attack from five CIA personnel.

    Sources told Fox News that the radio calls, which were described in closed testimony before the House Intelligence Committee, were characterized as almost frantic, with State Department employees who knew they could not defend themselves “pleading” for their lives.

    When the CIA team arrived from the annex about a mile away, they found the State Department employees without guns that could adequately protect them; one of the agents was found hiding in the consulate, apparently in a closet. The testimony lends more weight to repeated claims, in the wake of the attack, that the consulate was not adequately protected despite being located in a volatile and violent area prone to attack.

    When the CIA personnel were asked for their reaction to the administration’s initial explanation that an anti-Islam video and a demonstration gone awry were to blame for the attack, Fox News is told they were seething with anger because everything on the ground — from their perspective — showed it was a premeditated attack.

    At least three of the five — who were all in Benghazi — responded to the scene that night. The witnesses testified that five mortars rained down on the annex in less than a minute. They pointed to those details as more evidence of a professionally trained team, describing the attack on the annex as akin to a professional hit on the operation in order to drive it out of Benghazi.

    Congressional sources say the testimony seems to further conflict with and undercut the briefing three days after the attack by then-CIA Director David Petraeus, who likened the attack to a flash mob. When pressed on the number and precision of the mortars, Petraeus offered that Benghazi was flooded with mortars, and played down their accuracy by suggesting they could have been fired from the back of a pick-up truck.

    When Petraeus appeared on the Hill in November, following his resignation from the CIA over his admitted affair, he tried to claim that he knew it was a terrorist attack all along and insisted that he did not put the emphasis on the anti-Islam film.”

    Like Peggy I could find no evidence that showed Reagan did or did not attend (other than a few snarky comments that he didn’t), however I could also find no evidence that there was an event on the 125th anniversary. Perhaps there was not an invitation to attend?

    I am more surprised than critical about his turning down the invitation. Obama has used Lincoln as inspiration for his presidency. Hiffington Post reported that he took the oath of office using the Lincoln Bible.

    At a time when his approval ratings are sinking I would think a good speech on such an occasion would have been seen as an opportunity.

    Obama’s presidency has been divisive, however. Perhaps they feared he would be criticized from that perspective.

    I have an appointment this afternoon so I don’t have much time now but I would like to quickly point out on the employment number issue that month after month prior to the election the employment numbers were always revised the following month and were not as good as had been initially reported. So there is a pattern of reporting error that precedes this charge.

He did not choose it. And even if he had, you don’t think there could be other reasons other than the “under God” line? It’s the original copy! The one that Lincoln himself may have read from according to some historians. You honestly can’t think of any reason why Obama would want to read from that copy other than “Ooga booga scary secularist!”?

    Chris I saw a few of those news items too but the ones I saw were left wing opinion oriented complaining about conservatives questioning his nonattendance or his choice of versions of the speech. I was looking for something more substantial about Reagan’s non-attendance at the 125th. The article you posted contained a list of presidents that had visited Gettysburg but did not say whether the visits were on the anniversary date. Reagan’s name was not on that list so since he was president for that anniversary perhaps it was surmised that he did not attend when perhaps he was not invited.

    I just read my post and my comments and I found nothing particularly critical of the President. If anything I was just curious because it seems a tailor made invitation to speak for Obama and I cut him some slack.

    A. His presidency is a failure and he has made multiple mistakes including misrepresenting what he was about from the beginning and lying to the people repeatedly over many months.

    B. No matter how badly he (or his advisers, underlings, and czars) screw up, no matter how bad the economy continues to be, no matter how terrible the jobs picture, the numbers of people in real economic crisis…the left defends, excuses, and promotes him.

    C. This is the way the left has chosen to play politics for decades and it has and has had major media support.

    Not quite accurate. Media Matters reports he was asked to read the original draft…others have said he was given the original draft.

    According to the link, Abraham Lincoln Online it was the first draft. Its doubtful that Lincoln read from his first draft rather than the final version he wrote…and which was later chosen for his memorial in DC.

    Chris not all comments from the right about the things Obama does are criticism…mine certainly were not.

    Facts are facts Chris and opinions are opinions. Neither of us are entitled to alter the facts but we are entitled to our own opinions. What I stated was MY opinion.

    There were FOUR copies/draft and like Tina said I find it more plausible that he would have read the final fourth copy instead of the first draft. But, since no recording exist we will never know. Therefore, I merely expressed my opinion. I never represented it as a fact.

    My behavior since you do not know my is your opinion as to whether it is rational or not.

    In my opinion your behavior of consistently attacking people you don’t agree with is not rational.
