New Evidence Shows Former IRS Official Lois Lerner Sent Confidential Taxpayer Information About Conservative and Tea Party Groups to FBI Before the 2010 Election

Posted by Tina

The Daily Caller previously reported that Lerner shared confidential taxpayer information on nonprofit groups with high-ranking White House officials Ellen Montz and Jeanne Lambrew in 2012. Lerner was held in contempt of Congress by a full House vote after stonewalling the chamber’s investigation into her improper targeting of conservative and tea party groups between 2010 and 2012.

“We were extremely troubled by this new information, and by the fact that the IRS has withheld it from the Committee for over a year,” House Oversight chairman Rep. Darrell Issa and Oversight member Rep. Jim Jordan wrote in a letter to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “We were astonished to learn days ago from the Justice Department that these 21 disks contained confidential taxpayer information protected by federal law. We ask that you immediately produce all material explaining how these disks were prepared and transmitted to the FBI.”

“The IRS’s transmittal of this information to the FBI shows that the IRS took affirmative steps to provide sensitive evidentiary material to law-enforcement officials about the political speech of nonprofits,” Issa and Jordan wrote. “At the very least, this information suggests that the IRS considered the political speech activities of nonprofits to be worthy of investigation by federal law-enforcement officials. The IRS apparently considered political speech by nonprofit groups to be so troublesome that it illegally assisted federal law-enforcement officials in assembling a massive database of the lawful political speech of thousands of American citizens, weeks before the 2010 midterm elections, using confidential taxpayer information.”

Hmmmm. NPR recycles features and it’s annoying. They don’t try and recycle “news” stories though. Point to my side.

There’s nothing new about this. And, I looked at some of these emails, and they do seem to ORIGINATE with law enforcement, not the IRS.

I wish Darrell Issa would just go home and enjoy being rich and stop wasting my money.

  2. Tina says:

Sorry Libs, this is new evidence Evidence that has not previously been available. I think the emails you may be referring to were between Lerner and White House officials as reported by the Daily caller: “Lerner shared confidential taxpayer information on nonprofit groups with high-ranking White House officials Ellen Montz and Jeanne Lambrew in 2012”

This is correspondence between the IRS and the FBI: ““We were extremely troubled by this new information, and by the fact that the IRS has withheld it from the Committee for over a year,” House Oversight chairman Rep. Darrell Issa and Oversight member Rep. Jim Jordan wrote in a letter to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “We were astonished to learn days ago from the Justice Department that these 21 disks contained confidential taxpayer information protected by federal law…The IRS’s transmittal of this information to the FBI shows that the IRS took affirmative steps to provide sensitive evidentiary material to law-enforcement officials about the political speech of nonprofits…”

Libby this is not only illegal but if there was coordination with the White House represents an egregious abuse of power. If a Republican president ever did this your hair would be on fire five alarm. In fact you guys hounded Nixon from office and he only attempted to use the IRS against political enemies, not private citizens.

You can wish all night and day from here to election in 2016…this is not going away.

Political behavior by civil servants is the cause of the “wasted” money…take it up with your party and next time nominate someone worthy of the office.

  3. Pie Guevara says:

Nothing to see here! Disperse peaceably! Ooops, sorry, I just had a Chris, Dewey, Libby, and Joe Shaw moment.

  4. Pie Guevara says:

By the way, Nixon was rightly hounded from office, not so Obama.

  5. Harold says:

Yes Pie, apparently recorded dictation is more of a violation of office in politics then dubious or cover-up incompetence.

That is as long as the constant distribution of entitlement funds are flowing to their supporters.

  6. Tina says:

Nixon also did the honorable thing and stepped down to save the nation the expense and indignity of a long drawn out impeachment process.

Charges of illegal and unconstitutional activity by this administration are a much greater offense to our nation and our nations citizens since some of it involves targeting individuals directly. Some of those charges are coming from Democrats.

Dare we hope the “hounding” has begun? Couldn’t happen too soon; we’re dying here!

  7. Pie Guevara says:

No, Harold, Nixon was hounded from office because he unfortunately, willfully, and with full knowledge engaged in a criminal act and then went on to try and cover it up.

Of course that sort of behavior does not apply to modern Democrats, except on rare occasion.

Yes Tina, Nixon did end up doing the honorable thing. And no, I do not believe the MSM will hound Obama, Holder, Clinton, Learner et. al. They are still in the bag, although some cracks are showing.

  8. Harold says:

? Now I am not sure know what you meant in post 4, I was agreeing with you, albeit sarcastically with my comment.

My point being, In todays politics Nixon’s actions/crime in office would create little or no sustained news by the media, possibly not even calling for impeachment proceedings.

Today, especially when compared to the numerous quagmired investigations on numerous different allegations, that have been created by the Obama administration. It seems once exposed they (WH) claim to turn it over for investigation with some appointed partisan committee and all we hear after that is ‘WE cannot comment while under investigation’ and the Obama cover up machine, oiled by media guile which works to prevent accountability or disciplinary actions toward anyone.

    Sadly, different times.

BREAKING: New Emails Show Lois Lerner Was in Contact With DOJ About Prosecuting Tax Exempt Groups
    Katie Pavlich | Apr 16, 2014

“According to new IRS emails obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request from Judicial Watch, former head of tax exempt groups at the IRS Lois Lerner was in contact with the Department of Justice in May 2013 about whether tax exempt groups could be criminally prosecuted for “lying” about political activity.”

    September 2013:

Emails show IRS’ Lois Lerner specifically targeted tea party:

    Sept. 12, 2013

“Lois G. Lerner, the woman at the center of the Internal Revenue Service scandal over special scrutiny of conservative groups, specifically targeted tea party applications and directed that they be held up in 2011 in order to come up with an agency policy, according to several of Ms. Lerner’s emails released by a House committee Thursday.

In one 2011 email, Ms. Lerner specifically calls the tea party applications for tax-exempt status problematic, which seems to counter Democrats’ arguments that tea party groups weren’t targeted.”

I think you’ll get the idea, without going further, that Lerner’s emails have been dripping out for over a year. And note it took a FIOA from Judicial Watch to jet the emails the IRS said they’d given or would give.

What a pathetic way to run a country. Ashamed or afraid to tell the whole truth should be enough to have everyone involved removed from office and criminal charges brought against them.

  10. Peggy says:

The IRS is now claiming they can’t turn over Lerner’s emails because they’ve lost them.

This administration will lie and lie to keep the truth from us.

The Clever Way GOP Congressman Is Pushing Back After IRS Claims Lois Lerner Emails Were ‘Erased by a Glitch’:

“Rep. Steve Stockman (R-Texas) asked the National Security Agency on Friday to turn over all the metadata it has collected on the email accounts of former IRS official Lois Lerner from January 2009 to April 2011. Stockman’s clever move comes hours after the tax agency apparently claimed it had lost Lerner’s emails from that same time period due to a computer glitch.

“I have asked NSA Director Rogers to send me all metadata his agency has collected on Lois Lerner’s email accounts for the period which the House sought records,” Stockman said in a press release. “The metadata will establish who Lerner contacted and when, which helps investigators determine the extent of illegal activity by the IRS.”

“The claim incriminating communications were erased by a glitch conjures memories of Rose Mary Woods,” the congressman added. “Barack Obama has brought us Jimmy Carter’s economy and Richard Nixon’s excuses.”

Veteran IT Professional Gives Six Reasons Why the IRS’ Claim That It ‘Lost’ Two Years of Lois Lerner’s Emails Is ‘Simply Not Feasible’:

“A veteran IT professional tells TheBlaze that the IRS’ claim that the agency lost two years’ worth of former IRS official Lois Lerner’s emails is “simply not feasible.”

On Friday, members of Congress revealed that the IRS would not be able to hand over Lerner’s emails to and from other IRS employees from January 2009 to April 2011, possibly due to a “glitch” or “crash.” Lawmakers were seeking the emails as part of their investigation into the IRS targeting scandal.

Norman Cillo, an Army veteran who worked in intelligence and a former program manager at Microsoft, argued it is very difficult to lose emails for good and laid out six reasons why he believes Congress is “being lied to” about the Lerner emails:”

Lois Lerner’s Lost Emails: Questions for the IRS
    by Sharyl Attkisson

  13. Tina says:

Peggy Sharyl Attkisson does a fabulous job. I loved her reporting on Fast and Furious. Glad she has her own gig now!

Her questions about the “lost” emails are terrific…call the evading liars on their excuse.

My initial response was, “No problem, just make a call to the NSA”

  14. Tina says:

    Rick Moran at PJ Media:

Alan Joel at Tax Politix ferreted out an interesting tidbit of information. He recalled the Treasury Department Inspector General report from last year; and, sure enough, the IG used numerous email sources to develop a timeline of IRS targeting activity.

The period of missing emails from Lerner is January 2009 to April 2011….

Joel also found this interesting bit from Eliana Johnson of NRO written a couple of days ago when the story broke about the IRS sending the FBI private taxpayer information in 2010:

[the IRS] sent a database on 501(c)(4) social-welfare groups containing confidential taxpayer information to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, according to documents obtained by a House panel. The information was transmitted in advance of former IRS official Lois Lerner’s meeting the same month with Justice Department officials about the possibility of using campaign-finance laws to prosecute certain nonprofit groups. E-mails between Lerner and Richard Pilger, the director of the Justice Department’s election-crimes branch, obtained through a subpoena to Attorney General Eric Holder, show Lerner asking about the format in which the FBI preferred the data to be sent.

Funny how relatively innocuous information takes on a much more important sheen when you discover that email from Lerner to Pilger may not exist anymore./blockquote>

IT guys will tell you the “lost” excuse is totally lame. Even if Lerners computer crashed not everyones has and hard drives can be restored…data material retrieved.

  15. Peggy says:

Tina, Of course they’re lying again. But, they’ve gotten away with their lies so many times before they’ll do it until like the kid that cried wolf no one believes anything they say.

If this is a repeat forgive me. Last Christmas when my computer’s hard drive took a dump I decided to replace it instead of having it fixed. And guess what was right there when I signed onto my email account? All of my emails. My computer had nothing to do with my emails and neither does Lerner’s.

They are really getting desperate trying to pass off such a lame lie. A completely illiterate geek like me understands emails are not stored on individual’s computers, they’re stored on the providers servers.

I too loved that the congressman is submitting a bill to have the NSA release all of Lerner’s metadata for that time period. Great idea! At least something good will come out of the NSA spying on all of us. It does fall under the “foreign and domestic” threat.
