In the Headlines – Syrian Rebels in Trouble and Congressman Denied Entry to US Army Base

It appears there are cracks forming in the ranks of the rebels in Syria. The front line fighters claim they are not getting the support they need to continue and they have issued an ultimatum to their exiled leaders. Send reinforcements within 1 week or they will lay down their arms and retreat. “We, the leaders of the brigades and battalions … give the National Coalition, the [opposition] interim government, the [rebel] Supreme Military Council and all the leading bodies of the Syrian revolution a week to send reinforcements and complete aid,” the statement said on Wednesday (local time). “Should our call not be heard, we will lay down our weapons and pull out our fighters,” it added. Here’s a good one: A Congressman was refused entry into one of these camps housing young illegal aliens. An Oklahoma Congressman who visited an Army base being used to house illegal immigrant children now wonders what the federal government is hiding after he was denied access to the facility. “There is no excuse for denying a Federal Representative from Oklahoma access to a federal facility in Oklahoma where unaccompanied children are being held,” Rep. Jim Bridenstine said in a statement following his visit Tuesday to Ft. Sill Army base near Lawton. The Department of Health and Human Services has set up housing at Ft. Sill and two other military bases – Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio and Ventura County Naval Base in Oxnard, Cali. – to house thousands of unaccompanied alien children, or UACs, who were apprehended at the southern U.S. border. Border Patrol Agent Apparently Defies Gag Order to Go Unfiltered on CNN – Hear His Big Claim About Obama Admin.:

“Border Patrol agent Hector Garcia on Thursday accused the Obama administration of “aiding, abetting and facilitating the smuggling of illegal aliens across the border.”

In an interview with CNN, Garza said the current influx of illegal immigrants is “organized” and “orchestrated” by the drug cartels. Additionally, he said the federal government is giving illegal immigrants a “free pass.” He said the feds are using the equivalent of the honor system in asking illegal immigrants to later report to an immigration hearing — even though the majority of them will never do so.”

Remember Elián González and this countries policies on illegal immigrants from Cuba? I do.

    From Wikipedia:

“The Elián González saga exposed deep divisions among the residents of Miami-Dade County. While there were protests in favor of Elián staying in the United States, there were similar demonstrations in favor of sending the boy back to live with his father.

Commentators[39][40][41] have suggested that the Elián González affair may have been a factor in voters’ decisions in the 2000 United States presidential election, which could have affected the close outcome in Florida.[42] Al Gore’s[43] handling of the matter may have been as great a factor as anger by the predominantly Republican Cuban community over the boy’s return to Cuba. Gore initially supported Republican legislation to give the boy and his father permanent residence status,[44] but later supported the Administration position. He was attacked by both for pandering and being inconsistent.[45]”

I remember the Elian Gonzales episode where our government (Clinton’s AG Janet Reno) sent armed agents in the dead of night to rip Elian from his relatives arms (Why at night) because he had to be returned to his father in Cuba. His mother died bringing him here in a little boat to escape the communist regime, he had relatives to care for him, American policy was that if the boat touched land…

Should have had a better lawyer, I guess. Or maybe had he been ill…all I know is they were sure determined to send him back to Cuba.

    Elian today.

I suspect we will be hearing from Congressman before this is all over…and from governors and mayors too.

Required reading from Frank Miele, Daily Interlake in Montana who writes in an editors note: “The following column was written in July 2006, but the concatenation of the Fourth of July holiday, the immigrant children’s crusade on our southern border and the declaration of the Islamic State in the Mideast made the warning expressed herein more relevant than ever. Eight years later, we are even closer to darkness. —F.M”

Perhaps it is time to consider a corollary to Santayana’s famous aphorism about history. My proposal? Those who close their eyes to the dangers of the present are condemned to die in the dark.
