Attention: State of Jefferson Still on the Rise

Posted by Tina

The Sacramento Bee reports this morning that three more counties have joined in the ranks of those calling for a 51st state!

Woo Hoo!

Supporters of the aspiring State of Jefferson returned to Sacramento on Thursday to present “declarations of separation” from three more Northern California counties.

The petitions from Tehama, Glenn and Yuba counties, expressing their desire to withdraw from California because of a perceived lack of representation in the Legislature, bring the total number of breakaway counties to five. Jeffersonians rallied at the Capitol last August after presenting their initial declarations from Siskiyou and Modoc counties.

Mark Baird, the movement’s chairman who hails from Mugginsville in Siskiyou County, said that when he filed the petitions with state officials Thursday, “They didn’t know what to do with them. They didn’t want them.”

He’ll be back next month with another declaration from Sutter County, Baird said, and Plumas and Lake counties may follow. Once 10 or 12 counties are on board, Baird and his allies plan to ask the Legislature to pass a bill allowing the State of Jefferson to secede.

Please recall that what has prompted this very organized, very civil, and democratic move is the realization that the large population counties of California, a very large state, hold a monopoly in government that leaves the people in smaller populated counties paying taxes without power of representation.

Come on Butte County! Join the movement…a vote in favor of the State of Jefferson will return power to the people of Butte County to affect immediate concerns and the future for the children of Northern Californa.

I wish Butte County would do it. The contrast between a well run conservative state and this crazy state of California would be the best example against socialist-liberalism.

Ellen you make an important point!

A nicely done report contrasting the more liberal states and the more conservative states, and the latest counties to petition, Tehama, Yuba and Glenn, might be just the thing to prompt the Butte County Supervisors to reconsider the idea.

    Did I hear that right?

I thought I heard on K-PAY this morning that Butte County would revisit the State of Jefferson.

    Has anyone else heard anything?

If true I say kudos to the supervisors!

This proposal might seem radical at first glance but the complaints of those who support the idea mirror those of the founders of our nation, the largest being, taxation without representation.

The big metropolitan areas of this very large state control our lives according to their needs and wants (water for delta fish rather than food and farmers/ranchers; bullet train to nowhere; high taxes and regulation that kill jobs) without consideration for our needs and wants.
