Policing the language in administration announcements and documents HAS HAD NO DISCERNIBLE EFFECT ON ISLAMIC TERRORISM. It has not kept them from feeling they are not legitimate, it has not had any effect on recruitment.

          The simple and quite obvious fact is there is no evidence whatsoever that ISIS terror and recruiting activities have abated as a result of the administration policing language. In fact, they recruitment and terror activities by ISIS appear to be on the increase.

    It’s a funny cartoon, if you buy into the premise.

    But as Libby says, it’s semantics.

    Experts under both the Bush and Obama administration say that calling the terrorists “Islamic” gives them what they want, and helps them gain legitimacy among potential radicals. Saying that they are not “true Muslims,” while certainly engaging in the “no true Scotsman” fallacy, is a strategy meant to insult them and remove their legitimacy.

    Why do you think you know more about how to fight ISIS than they do?

        Because many radicals are recruited partially on the basis that they feel the West is against them and their religion. That’s a fact. Saying we are at war with “radical Islam” is used by ISIS as a propaganda tool to convince potential radicals that we are against Islam. That is also a fact.

        These facts don’t go away just because you don’t want to hear them.

            Jack, ISIS’ own magazine, Dabiq, talks often of eliminating the “gray zone” of moderate Muslims, insisting that Muslims cannot possibly live in peaceful coexistence with non-Muslims in the West, and that all true Muslims must eventually choose to follow the path of ISIS. They also tell Muslims that they are persecuted in the West. This is a major recruiting tool. When Western politicians suggest discriminatory policies, such as banning Muslim immigration, that absolutely furthers ISIS’ narrative and gives them further help in recruiting.

            It is preposterous that you claim to be knowledgable about the threat when you don’t even know this.

    ISIS’ strategy is to create a narrative of a war between Islam and the West. The phrase “Islamic terrorism,” proposing to temporarily ban Muslim immigration, and the general fearmongering about Muslims this blog has participated in over the past week plays right into their hands.

        If I were part of ISIS, I would definitely be using this blog to help convince potential recruits of this.

            Yes, it does.

            When the government reported on the threat of “right-wing extremism,” many on the right wing–including on this very blog–took that as a personal insult. You viewed it as the Obama administration declaring that *all* right-wingers were dangerous and possible terrorists, even though that’s not what anyone in the government said.

            So why wouldn’t potential Muslim radicals feel the same way if the government declared war on “Islamic terrorism?”

    Me: Yes. It is a big deal. We are nasty little cultural imperialists, rampaging the globe foisting Coco Cola and Kojak re-runs on everybody. Some people don’t like it. They, like somebody else I could name, feel irrationally threatened and behave accordingly. You will deny it. But it’s still a factor in the mess.

    Me: What is this? Oh, I get it. The violent Jihadis are Nazis. It’s a fair comparison, I suppose, and a component in recruiting, but not the major one. You have to face it, Tina, if we had not over-thrown Egypt’s elected government 80 years ago, if Israel had not driven the Palestinians from their homes 60 years ago, if our Shah had not tried to turn them all into little Europeans 50 years ago, we would not be in this pickle right now.

    And it is imperative that we figure out how to persuade them we’re not gonna do that sort of thing no more. They have a lovely culture (fingers crossed) and we won’t meddle no more.
