Just An Observation

by Jack

The one big consolation from getting older is hindsight.  We’ve hopefully learned from our  life mistakes and that adds up to wisdom.  It’s no guarantee, even though it should be, unless, unless…. and this is core of the story:

A friend of mine recently turned 65.  She spent most of her adult life as a school teacher.  Another friend of mine, nearly the same age, spent most of his life working in real estate.  He crafted deals, did some building, selling, and also ran several small businesses outside of real estate.

Both people have bachelor degrees.  Now you would think that two, highly intelligent,  educated and mature people, who arrived at retirement age about the same time, would have a lot of overlapping views when it came to politics, right?

Nope, not even close.  She (the teacher) thinks Obama was the most wonderful president in history and she never misses an opportunity to extol what she sees as his virtues.   On the other hand, [he] thinks Obama will be rated as one of the worst presidents of all time! She points to the Affordable Care Act as proof of her passionately held view, and ironically, so does he.

What’s going on here,  its the same criteria, but two polar opposite views?

Well, when both people took personality tests there were some defining differences.  She was rated as emotional, caring, creative, with many good motherly qualities.  He (the business guy) was rated as logical and possessing many desirable leadership qualities while also being caring and creative.

If I dare venture into the area of stereotypes now, I would have to say that it’s been my personal experience that school teachers do tend to be liberal, very liberal…bleeding heart liberal!  And in many cases they are activists for the cause du jour and they vote democrat.   Not all teachers of course, but many in my opinion.

Conversely, my male friend is typically conservative; he’s well grounded, thoughtful, and makes decisions based on risk v. reward, return on equity and so on.  Smart, kind of like the way Donald Trump operates.

If these two people could have swapped careers, its safe to say that my teacher friend would either have adapted (change a lot of her thinking) to her new riskier environment or face failure after failure and eventually…financial ruin.  Much like our country is facing right now.

I can’t say the same  for my conservative friend.  I’m thinking he would be just fine in a teaching roll and better yet, his students would NOT have to do a lot of re-learning once they entered the real world.

My conclusion is, teaching is one of the few safe professions for liberals and so they gravitate there.  They overload the profession with their foolish and stupid minority views.  In teaching, they can harbor their stupid ideas and beliefs and yet do quite well.  They can even excel and be lauded for their liberal stupidity because most of their peers think just like them, another example of circular reasoning.

Now back to Obama.  His legacy is history will paint him as one of this nation’s worst presidents, because he failed at controlling the debt, failed at international diplomacy, failed at economic growth, failed at race relations, failed as a military leader, failed as a domestic security (law enforcement) leader and failed at healthcare reform.  In the meanwhile this buffoon lives it up on the taxpayer’s money like a king.  Funny, my liberal school teacher friend missed all those blunders, but my conservative friend sure didn’t!

The bottom line is:  If liberalism isn’t classified as a form of mental illness, it probably should be.  It has all the earmarks of an irrational and unstable mind.  And the last place we need crazy people … is teaching our kids or in politics.

Obumble loves getting awards, but I doubt he’ll like his Worst President Ever title . . . .

Interesting thing happened this morning. Awakened my laptop to find that my Twitter account had been switched from my home page to a page entitled “OurFirstStand.”
All of the tweets there were about anti-Trump, protests by illegals on immigration issues, protests and comments in favor of keeping Obumblecare, promoting $hrilLIARy or Fakeahontas, and of course how great the Demwits ideas are.

Twitter had to have done the switching, because I sure as heck would NOT have looked at ANY of this garbage or followed any of the fools doing the posts.

Thankfully there are enough of us conservative types both in and out of the public system who were able to keep this country from going down the toilet. I too retired from education surrounded by very strong liberals, but I also lived in an environment of two family owned small businesses that offered me views of both sides.

Gov’t funded public sector jobs of all types are filled with employees who know where their livelihood comes from and are not going to vote themselves out of their jobs. As gov’t grows larger and larger so will the Democrat voters.

A good example of this is the John Lewis disrespectful statements of pres.-elect Trump.
    Here are my thoughts.

No republican boycotted either of Obama’s inaugurations. They showed up out of respect for the office if not the man.

Are these Dems with their boycotts representing the 700,000 individuals in their district or did the majority vote for Trump? If they were my rep. I’d be finding out.

Also, Lee says she can’t “celebrate” or participate in Trump’s inauguration ceremony because she doesn’t agree with him, his life-style and his beliefs. But, as a liberal progressive Democrat she believes Christians should be forced to participate aka “celebrate” in ceremonies of those who they disagree with for the very same reasons as Lee and the others. In other words if you’re a working class member of society working to support yourself and not a public taxpayer paid representative you can’t live by your beliefs any more. But, those whose salaries we pay for can because they aren’t held to the same standards. Wrong? You bet it is.

If you haven’t seen the latest Diamond and Silk video taking down Lewis it’s worth watching.

A while back I read this article about the different way Liberals and Conservative view/see things. Here is a brief outline of that article.

None of the article print has been alerted, some of the study work I left out as it was just supportive of the findings of the authors:

“According to the experts who study political leanings, liberals and conservatives do not just see things differently. They are different—in their personalities and even their unconscious reactions to the world around them. For example, in a study published in January, a team led by psychologist Michael Dodd and political scientist John Hibbing of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln found that when viewing a collage of photographs, conservatives’ eyes unconsciously lingered 15 percent longer on repellent images, such as car wrecks—suggesting that conservatives are more attuned than liberals to assessing potential threats.

Meanwhile examining the contents of 76 college students’ bedrooms, as one group did in a 2008 study, revealed that conservatives possessed more cleaning and organizational items, such as ironing boards and calendars, confirmation that they are orderly and self-disciplined. Liberals owned more books and travel-related memorabilia, which conforms with previous research suggesting that they are open and novelty-seeking.

“These are not superficial differences. They are psychologically deep,” says psychologist John Jost of New York University, a co-author of the bedroom study.

Although conservatives and liberals are fundamentally different, hints are emerging about how to bring them together—or at least help them coexist. In his recent book The Righteous Mind, psychologist Jonathan Haidt of the N.Y.U. Stern School of Business argues that liberals and conservatives need not revile one another as immoral on issues such as birth control, gay marriage or health care reform. Even if these two worldviews clash, they are equally grounded in ethics, he writes. Meanwhile studies by Jost and others suggest that political views reside on a continuum that is mediated in part by universal human emotions such as fear

Psychologists have found that conservatives are fundamentally more anxious than liberals, which may be why they typically desire stability, structure and clear answers even to complicated questions. “Conservatism, apparently, helps to protect people against some of the natural difficulties of living,” says social psychologist Paul Nail of the University of Central Arkansas.

Anxiety is an emotion that waxes and wanes in all of us, and as it swings up or down our political views can shift in its wake. When people feel safe and secure, they become more liberal; when they feel threatened, they become more conservative.

Research conducted by Nail and his colleague in the weeks after September 11, 2001, showed that people of all political persuasions became more conservative in the wake of the terrorist attacks.

More practically, instead of trying to change people’s emotional state (an effect that is temporary), astute policy makers might be able to phrase their ideas in a way that appeals to different worldviews.
On topics where liberals and conservatives will never see eye to eye, opposing sides can try to cultivate mutual respect. In The Righteous Mind, Haidt identifies several areas of morality.

Liberals, he says, tend to value two of them: caring for people who are vulnerable and fairness, which for liberals tends to mean sharing resources equally.

Conservatives care about those things, too, but for them fairness means proportionality—that people should get what they deserve based on the amount of effort they have put in.

Conservatives also emphasize loyalty and authority, values helpful for maintaining a stable society.

Haidt has a message for both sides. He wants the left to acknowledge that the right’s emphasis on laws, institutions, customs and religion is valuable.

Conservatives recognize that democracy is a huge achievement and that maintaining the social order requires imposing constraints on people.

Liberal values, on the other hand, also serve important roles: ensuring that the rights of weaker members of society are respected; limiting the harmful effects, such as pollution, and fostering innovation by supporting diverse ideas and ways of life.

Haidt is not out to change people’s deepest moral beliefs. Yet he thinks that if people could see that those they disagree with are not immoral but simply emphasizing different moral principles, some of the antagonism would subside.

Intriguingly, Haidt himself has morphed from liberal to centrist over the course of his research. He now finds value in conservative tenets that he used to reject reflexively: “It’s yin and yang. Both sides see different threats; both sides are wise to different virtues.””

Ew, Jack … what a nasty world you would make … if you could.

Thank goodness you are quite powerless in that regard. (Silly, too. The day capitalists go to work for teacher wages … will never come.)

Trump, alas, is not. But I think, with some relentless news coverage of: dossiers, protests, conflicts of interests and lawsuits deriving therefrom, Congressional ethics charges (or criminal lack thereof), impeachment proceedings (eventually they will have no choice but to act), so on and so forth, we can minimize the damage.

    • Tina says:

“The day capitalists go to work for teacher wages … will never come”

There are many people who call themselves capitalists who make less than teachers…a lot less. All they want is the opportunity to climb the ladder of success. You Dems blunt and discourage the market and good jobs in favor of government largess and control as we have witnessed the last eight years.

Your sad little group of sore losers are like gnats at a BBQ, bothersome but basically irrelevant.

  7. Libby says:

Now, this … this is what capitalists get up to:

“(CNN)Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said Tuesday that Donald Trump’s pick to quarterback the replacement of Obamacare, Tom Price, may have broken the law with a questionable stock purchase.”

“If he knew about it, it could very well be a violation of the law,” Schumer told CNN. “Now they say there’s a broker, it’s kind of strange that this broker would pick this stock totally independently of him introducing legislation that’s so narrow and specific to this company.”‘

“Schumer also called for an investigation of Price after CNN reported that Price bought up to $15,000 worth of stock in Zimmer Biomet — a medical device maker — and then introduced a measure that would have directly benefited the company. One week after Price bought the stock, he put in a measure that would have delayed a new regulation that would have harmed the company.”

Not the moral grounding we want to give the Youth of America, is it?

    • Tina says:

You have no moral grounds on which to stand. The last eight years of evidence of scandal brought zero protests from you. Egregiously immoral, if not illegal, shenanigans from your parties leaders and their surrogates in government are blowing in the wind, stopped by corruption in the DOJ and elsewhere.

Republicans have stepped down and resigned for decades when accusations have proven to be true. They’ve done so without much support from their fellow republicans.

Not so you Democrats. You lie, cover each others butts, and refuse to admit wrong doing even when the evidence is overwhelming. In power you work against the law and the people to protect leaders. You have no standing to preach morality to us or to Trump.

These are unproven, and likely baseless, accusations from a sore loser Democrat who wanted to be the next Speaker of the House. When you have actual evidence please, by all means, bring it.

      • Libby says:

Denial is not an argument. That you refuse to believe fact contrary to your belief is well established. But the stock purchase and subsequent legislative machination are fact.

And yet more evidence of the perfidy of the Trump Administration … before it’s even started … fer pity’s sake.

        • Tina says:

Baseless accusations are not proof of wrong doing. The stock purchase is fact, Price said as much. But it is not evidence of anything but a purchase. Can you tell me when the legislation was first considered, how much Price had to do with writing it, or even whether it does indeed effect outcomes in favor of that company in particular? (No, you just have that old “seriousness of the charge” crap to fall back on.)

If the legislation had ANYTHING to do with ending that disgusting tax on medical devises that has been on the agenda since it was first advanced as part of O’bummercare. It is the most insensitively punishing tax in the entire law.

Again, when you have real evidence of wrong doing get back to me.

Democrats show up at these hearings to make speeches and ask leading questions in an attempt to trip up the candidate. The escapee from SNL made a speech running out his time without asking a single question. It was pathetic.

Price held his ground and answered their stupid questions just fine. I even saw an amused smile at one point. But you see what you want to see…Who cares!

Trump has done more that is positive for America before inauguration than the Bummer man did in eight years. It hasn’t been too hard since O put himself deep in the basement with all of his failures.

      • Libby says:

Oh, joy … oh, bliss …

        https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/erik-wemple/wp/2017/01/18/in-retraction-request-to-cnn-trump-team-confirms-cnn-story/?utm_term=.62839a33862d

Price (taking “guess who” as his model, no doubt) blustered and bloviated his way through his confirmation hearing, claiming he has no idea what he’s invested in. What horsepucky. The man opposes the ACA because it prevents him and his ilk from getting richer than they already are. Is that disgusting, or what? And he’ll be confirmed anyway, though it will make all the Repugs who vote for him look just like the hypocrites they are.

I mean, this is what The Orange One means by “draining the swamp”? Is this what you thought he meant?
