Sanctuary CA and the Deadly Sonoma Arsonist

Posted by Jack

WASHINGTON, DC — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Tom Homan confirmed on Thursday that a man arrested in connection with setting a fire in Sonoma County Wine Country is an illegal alien from Mexico who has been twice returned to his “home country.”

Homan also confirmed that ICE has issued detainer requests for Jesus Fabian Gonzalez five times now in the past year alone, including the one issued on October 16 in relation to his most recent arrest on suspicion of arson. All of the arrests were made “by Sonoma County on various felony and misdemeanor charges,” according to Homan.

Sonoma County is considered a sanctuary jurisdiction and does not fully cooperate with federal immigration officials. That includes not honoring ICE detainer requests. “ICE was never notified of Mr. Gonzalez’ various releases,” Homan wrote in the statement regarding Gonzalez.  (I would think that the release of this alleged arsonist is reckless endangerment and that citizens could have a legitimate lawsuit for damages against the County of Sonoma.  The Board of Supervisors who passed the sanctuary status may not be sued directly, according to my legal authority)  END

Because there were several fires in the area, and it is not yet clear what role the fires Gonzales allegedly deliberately set played in the overall disaster.  However, what is suspected is pretty bad, if it proves to be true.   He could be responsible for over 40 deaths and six thousand homes destroyed and perhaps more.  Investigators are trying to determine if the fires he was allegedly setting propagated the other fires not far away from his initial alleged acts of arson.

UPDATE:

Currently jailed in Sonoma County, Mexican citizen Jesus Fabian Gonzalez was arrested when he was allegedly caught starting a fire in a Sonoma Valley park as fires still burned in the region.

In an Oct. 18 statement, Thomas Homan, acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, called Sonoma County a “non-cooperative jurisdiction” in regard to ICE’s detainer request that the sheriff’s office hold Gonzalez 48 hours past his release date.

Here is the ICE statement:

“Once again, a non-cooperative jurisdiction has left their community vulnerable to dangerous individuals and preventable crimes. ICE lodged a detainer against Jesus Gonzalez with Sonoma County jail officials on October 16, following his arrest on felony charges for maliciously setting fire to a property. This is especially troubling in light of the massive wildfires already devastating the region. Over the past year, ICE has lodged detainers against Mr. Gonzalez after four separate arrests by Sonoma County on various felony and misdemeanor charges. ICE was never notified of Mr. Gonzalez’ various releases. Additionally, Mr. Gonzales has been returned to his home country of Mexico on two separate occasions. The residents of Sonoma County, and the state of California, deserve better than policies that expose them to avoidable dangers. Non-cooperation policies – now enshrined in California state law – ensure only one thing: criminals who would otherwise be deported will be released and left free to reoffend as they please.”

Not sure where the fake news is, but I do know that federal law trumps State law, and always has since the beginning of this country. The Sheriff has no legal right to say the federal detainer isn’t good enough for their department. It is. Then again CA has no right to declare itself a sanctuary state, but they did it anyway. Hopefully all the legislators that passed the sanctuary status will be indicted for criminal conspiracy.

      • Pie Guevara says:

My bet is that ICE has good reason for the arson charge and that the sheriff is grandstanding.

      • Harold says:

Jack, I agree that fake news is just a bias attempt by the sheriff to discredit and prevent ICE from preforming its role in detaining illegals.

Homan seems more interested in preventing future problems caused by the protection of illegals in sanctuary cities and the entire state of California than the sheriff seems to be.

This is typical obstructionism played out by a free wheeling official who lacks the requirement of protect for those he serves, at least those that are citizens and not illegal criminals

Must be a comforting feeling to illegals not only to be protected in such a manner , and given the benefit of a catch and release mentality of a State like California. Sigh

The first paragraph of the article I linked explains what the fake news was.

  1. Jim says:

The rumor I’ve heard is the fires were started by pot farmers burning out the competition to raise prices.

  2. Libby says:

The company you all keep … is not good for the “conservative” and apparently inbred tendency to paranoid conspiracy.

And, Jack, human beings perpetrate insurance fraud, not Whites, Blacks, or Hispanics (or any other subset of humanity). Whether they happen to be legal residents, or not, is also completely irrelevant to the alleged commission of said crime.

So, to suggest that this particular alleged arsonist be treated differently … is inhumane.

    Right?

    • Tina says:

The “human being” was a known arsonist. He WAS in the country illegally and his name identified his “subset,” so what’s your problem?

Nobody suggested he be treated “differently” only that he be subjected to the LAWS of our nation, as anyone else would be!

Sanctuary laws are about getting around federal law and treating some humans differently than others! It’s similar to the “pig” privilege your party embraces…some are “more equal” than others.

  3. J. Soden says:

Whether the arsonist be legal or illegal – any arsonist who causes another’s death due to their starting the fire should face First Degree Murder charges.

  4. Joe says:

I can’t possibly image why anyone would be upset about illegal aliens criminals coming into the country and starting fires which burn down hundreds or even thousands of homes and the local gooberment enabling all this. At least this is the way I would think if I’m a liberal.

  5. Peggy says:

The Kate Steinle murder trial began today. It will be interesting to see how the jury votes if they heard the Napa fires were possibly started by another illegal who had been deported and returned multiple times too.

The Napa fires death count is 42 with close to 10,000 homes and businesses destroyed, and the fire isn’t out yet.

Do California voters still believe dangerous illegals are entitled to live here at the risk of their own lives and security? I wonder.
