Let’s Celebrate, America!

by Tina

We celebrate the American worker today by taking a day off to relax!

Americans have a lot to celebrate today given the fact that they finally see good jobs coming back and their wages rising. Yes, our thriving economy has produced fantastic opportunities for workers all across the fruited plain. Construction jobs, manufacturing jobs, service jobs…authorities say there are more job openings than there are workers to fill them. This is the fulfillment of a campaign to “Make America Great Again.” It follows many years of stagnation and despair for middle class and poor workers.

The fascinating thing about this year and this holiday, with the many positive reasons for celebration, is the nonsense that falls from the mouths of some in the political arena. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, for instance, said of the bonuses American companies gave their employees following the tax cuts, “I’m not sure that $1,000 … goes very far for almost anyone.” Nancy Pelosi, called the tax cut bonuses “crumbs,” which is ironic since she once described a $40-per-paycheck tax cut under Obama as a “victory for America.”

The press has also downplayed the good economy as a positive for Trump and the American people. The Washington Post didn’t think Trump deserved credit for the economy: “Trump doesn’t deserve credit for all the economic good news.” Larry Summers claimed that “while Trump will probably try to take credit for all the economic good news, it is unlikely that he deserves it.” And the New York Times tried to convince the American worker that his experience of the economy wouldn’t turn into a positive for Trump at the polls: “Booming Economy May Be Little Felt as Voters Decide.” Another WaPo story featured the headline: “The good economic news is actually bad. Here’s why,” and included the following: “…all economic news is bad — especially good economic news, because it gives rise to bad behavior…recent Wall Street Journal front-page headline: “Americans Save Less.”

We Americans can laugh at all of this biased partisan blather because consumer confidence has risen to a fifty year high…because the middle class and poor finally have good jobs…their kids are finding work and moving out of the basement…and the booming economy is crushing records for minority and women employment. The economy has improved significantly (4.2% GDP last quarter) since Donald Trump and the republicans in Congress cut their taxes and Trump removed unnecessary job-killing regulations. Trump DOES deserve credit for advancing these policy changes!

President Trump’s message for Labor Day celebrates the working people who make America great:

“On Labor Day, we celebrate the American worker: The bulwark of our national prosperity and the cornerstone of our national greatness. America’s workers pay our taxes, support our values, serve in our military, raise our children, protect our Constitution, and build our communities. They deserve, in return, the unwavering fidelity of their Government. Thousands of Americans have found a renewed sense of purpose in our resurgent economy. The dedication, resolve, and pride of the American worker are the reason our nation has achieved prosperity that was once thought unattainable. We have kept our promise to always keep the White House door open to members and leaders of our country’s labor organizations. The dedication, resolve, and pride of the American worker built the greatest country in the history of the world — the envy of nations and the pride of countless millions — and now, we are bringing to life the next great chapter in the history of this magnificent Republic.

“Make America Great Again” was a campaign slogan that was meant to inspire hope for the future for all Americans after a dismal decade of economic malaise and failing companies. Trump’s detractors and enemies are now attempting to say that Trump implied America was never great. How petty and cheap.

Let the nasty remarks of politicians and talking heads roll off your back and have a great day today whatever you do…even if it’s work!

    Celebrate America, you say?

    When it’s become this?

Yes, coming to a public library near you…

I got to admit when I read about that the other day I had to double check my calendar to make sure it was not April fools. I never thought I’d see the day when my tax dollars pay for this.

Drag Queen Story Hour sparks protests in conservative towns
    https://www.yahoo.com/news/drag-queen-story-hour-sparks-protests-conservative-towns-130205923.html

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Once upon a time, in 2015, a writer in San Francisco named Michelle Tea got the idea for “Drag Queen Story Hour”: men in full drag reading children’s books to kids and parents in programs aimed at providing “positive and unabashedly queer role models.”

Since then, Drag Queen Story Hours have been held at libraries or book stores in big cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, and costume-loving New Orleans — where over-the-top hair, makeup and gowns and stories about gender fluidity aren’t exactly new.

What kind of parent would expose their kid to this, Mrs. Tina?

And of course if I think that drag queens reading children books in drag is not entirely normal, or I don’t want my kid to think that is “normal”, I’m a hate-monger and a string of other “ists” and “isms”. I’ll bet if I tried to go to California and read children books on conservative values and free market capitalism, I’d be physically attacked and called an extremist.

I never thought I’d live to see the day that this country was so bat sh*t crazy.

      Indeed you would Joe!

Once content to live their alternative lifestyles while letting the rest of America live as they choose the LGBTQ… community now insists on forcing their beliefs and mores on others through schools, media and the courts.

I would expect to find a story hour featuring a drag queen in communities where they live. I don’t appreciate indoctrination and bullying tactics that they apparently can get away with because as minorities they aren’t held to the same civic standards.

  2. Joe says:

And Mrs. Tina, I think you are missing a closing bold tag on your last paragraph there as the whole blog after that is bold now.

(Thanks Joe, I’ll fix that right away!)

And as a result of a big “poke in the eye” to folks on Labor Day from NIKE, they just went to the top of my DO NOT BUY list:

NIKE failed to learn the lesson of what happened to Dick’s Sporting Goods’ plummeting sales when they decided to join the PC BS.

I have a new pair, dang!

I might take a magic marker or the scissors to them. Can’t quite bring myself to setting them on fire like others have.

In the past 24 hours, Nike stock has dropped three per cent and some people have taken to burning their Nike sneakers…#NikeBoycott is trending

Obama had multiple quarters that were higher than that, including one at 5.1% growth. If I look for your articles commending him for that achievement, will I find them?

The fact is that the economy is following trends that started in the middle of the Obama years.

    • Tina says:

“Obama had multiple quarters that were higher than that…”

Politifact, “…Obama’s time in office, quarterly GDP growth averaged 2.0 percent, or 1.5 percent when averaging out annual figures.”

The problem with the Obama economy was that it never got off the ground, artificial stimulation by the fed kept the sock market roaring so the rich made out but his policies hurt small business and the middle class so that main street languished and died in some cases. I’m sorry Chris but huffing about a single quarter’s growth just doesn’t impress. That’s why you won’t find articles by me “commending him for that achievement.”

“…the economy is following trends that started in the middle of the Obama years.”

The overall economy is responding to positive changes made to our tax and regulation laws. There may be trends in a sector such as tech that began half way through the Obama years but even that’s a stretch considering we could just as easily say those trends started in the late sixties in Silicon Valley. The trends didn’t get people back to work…they didn’t inspire entrepreneurial ventures or revive manufacturing.

Obama’s economic policies did not favor private sector business, in fact they stifled them. They favored big government control and growth. The average working stiff suffered because of it…even college grads suffered…anyone that wasn’t working in healthcare or government had a pretty tough eight years.

I will repeat the ugly stats if you force me to.

      • Cherokee Jack says:

It’s pointless to throw facts at the losers. It won’t mean a thing to them. What’s fun is that we get to listen to them screaming and howling. The Kavanaugh hearings are a perfect example of their state of mind. Try arguing facts with that.
They’re too busy agonizing over Hillary’s Waterloo to look around and see that the country has gone back to work, or to understand all the good things happening because Trump refuses to stick to the old establishment policies.

      • Chris says:

“I’m sorry Chris but huffing about a single quarter’s growth just doesn’t impress.”

That is literally what you did for Trump right here:

The economy has improved significantly (4.2% GDP last quarter) since Donald Trump and the republicans in Congress cut their taxes and Trump removed unnecessary job-killing regulations. Trump DOES deserve credit for advancing these policy changes!

What you really mean is that looking at a single quarter’s growth impresses you if that quarter happened under Trump, but looking at a single quarter’s growth does not impress you if it happened under Obama.

The Politifact article you cited doesn’t contradict my point at all. Annual GDP growth has grown more slowly under Trump than it did under Obama.

  5. Tina says:

“That is literally what you did for Trump right here”

Not really. I wasn’t comparing quarters of GDP in the sentence. My parenthetical reference to the last quarter was an aside…an example. I could have used any number of significant stats…record breaking number of employed minorities…the revival of manufacturing…companies returning jobs (and tax revenue) to America from overseas (Apple, already the largest US taxpayer, anticipates repatriation tax payments of approximately $38 billion as required by recent changes to the tax law.)

The meat in my statement is “since Donald Trump and the republicans in Congress cut their taxes and Trump removed unnecessary job-killing regulations.”

    “What you really mean…under Obama.”

No that is not what I meant. Not at all.

“Annual GDP growth has grown more slowly under Trump than it did under Obama.”

Trump has been President for less than two years. The tax reform bill didn’t get through Congress until last December. It took time to review regulations and weed out the redundant and unnecessary red tape…they are still working on it. Get real!

Improvement on the jobs front alone is plenty to celebrate…why are you not happy?

Still sticking to the false notion that Obama’s economic policies were good for the average working aged American?

    • Chris says:

Improvement on the jobs front alone is plenty to celebrate…why are you not happy?

I am happy. You are the one who refused to celebrate positive economic news under Obama. Trump himself denied the same jobs numbers he pushes now. He claimed that the government was lying about the real unemployment number and that it could be as high as 42%–an impossibility. And we are supposed to believe such an ignoramus is the reason for the strong economy? Absurd. He inherited an economy strong enough to withstand him. So far, that is. The real conservatives are warning about the effects that will happen as a result of Trump’s trade war. It’s unlikely these trends will continue once those hit.

      • Tina says:

        You don’t sound happy.

Many Americans, myself included, had very little to celebrate under Obama. Three of my adult kids lost their jobs and had difficulty finding work. My manufacturing company business was reduced by 2/3 during the eight years of Obama. All of the reps who once came by or called to sell us parts lost their jobs! I finally closed my doors. I wasn’t alone. Had I not been a responsible saver we’d have closed much earlier, as it is we went from 10 employees to 4 with my husband and I unpaid for several years.

Obama’s onerous policies shut down coal producers for what would be a fractional improvement in air quality…a shameful decision that cost a lot of workers their jobs and tossed the hard work of the owners in the dumper. Brick and Mortar retail, already under pressure from the internet, slowed to a snails pace…quite a few died. Construction was down…not much building goes on when the future looks so dim…no one wants to take the financial risk…same with hiring people or buying equipment…do you get a sense of the sluggishness?

Students with brand new college degrees, and fat student loan debt, were working at Burger King and living in Moms basement! A lot of people worked two or three low paying jobs and barely got by.

The recession ended in the spring of 2009. We should have seen a strong recovery by Christmas 2010 (18 months is average). We saw short lived blips of activity and then back to stagnation.

The demand for food stamps continued upward until sometime in 2013 when it peaked at 47.6 million. Demand then began a gradual trend downward but was still approx 45 million in the Fall of 2016. In 2017 it dropped to 42.2 million. In August of 2018 it was at 39.3 million.

Then there’s the extreme higher costs for healthcare insurance for many Americans who were told their premiums would be reduced by $2500 and who couldn’t afford to use Obamacare anyway because the new deductibles were too high. Or those who had good insurance through their employer but lost it…or those who were forced to buy Obamacare or pay a fine and weren’t given a choice they could afford that suited their needs.

The celebration (or not) isn’t about the statistics anyway. The celebration is about more people having the opportunity to work and thrive and see a brighter future ahead.

“we are supposed to believe such an ignoramus is the reason for the strong economy? ”

Believe whatever you want…people are finding good work again and that’s what counts!

Trump used a lot of different numbers when he talked about unemployment and jobs. He enjoys bating the left, especially the press, but he was also repeating what others had said or written, including economists. USA Today:

Trump, Feb. 9: I am going to be the greatest jobs president that God ever created. Remember that. Don’t believe those phony numbers, when you hear 4.9 and 5% unemployment. The number’s probably 28, 29, as high as 35. In fact, I even heard recently 42%. Do you think we’d have gatherings like this if we had, if we had 5% unemployment, do you really think we’d have these gatherings? …

… David Stockman, a former director of the Office of Management and Budget under President Ronald Reagan, used a “real unemployment rate” of 42.9%, which he based on the potential labor hours if every American adult, ages 16 to 68, worked full time.

Obviously not all working aged Americans want to or need to work. Stockman’s figure includes stay at home housewives, teenagers, retirees, wealthy people, etc. But I think that’s where Trumps 42% figure came from. The point he was making was not the number…the point was the long stagnation that caused too many Americans to suffer!!! It’s particularly sad and annoying when the well known, well documented solution is leaving more money (power) in the hands of individual, job creating, wealth building citizens. A solution you big government socialism types refuse to admit…and government does not suffer, revenue wise.

        May 2018, Bloomberg:

The U.S. posted its largest monthly budget surplus on record in April, which the Congressional Budget Office said reflected stronger economic activity over the past year.

Receipts in April totaled $510 billion, about 12 percent more than the same period last year, while outlays increased by 8.4 percent to $296 billion, the Treasury Department said Thursday in its monthly budget statement. The monthly surplus was $214 billion, the highest in records dating to 1968.

“He inherited an economy strong enough to withstand him. So far…”

A totally ignorant statement, Chris, given what the people have done in response to his policies to build this economy!

        “The real conservatives… (really, Chris?)

…are warning about the effects that will happen as a result of Trump’s trade war.”

Trumps high risk trade policy scares a lot of people but it has born some fruit.

At the end of July a preliminary trade deal with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was announced where the parties agreed, “to work toward zero tariffs and subsidies, and boost soybean imports to benefit American farmers.”

The recent deal with Mexico has been completed and negotiations with Canada are ongoing. That should wrap up soon. Trumps team is working hard to produce better deals for Americans.

All presidents make mistakes and no president can please everyone. You will have opportunities to complain for a number of years if he continues to win for the people, Chris.
