Sen. Chuck Schumer Speaks Candidly About Immigration Reform

Posted by Jack (with thanks to Hal for finding the video)

Illegal immigration has been a long standing problem in republican circles, but it also one that has been recognized by the democrats.   It has been candidly addressed by President Clinton and more recently by Sen. Chuck Schumer, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security.   For your educational benefit please watch this compelling and inspiring 2 minute video.   After watching this video one must wonder with such amazing agreement on both sides of the isle, why so little has been done to correct it?  But, if you think there really isn’t true agreement, then please ask yourself who it is that has sold out America and who has been steadfast?

Schumer is articulating a moderate, compromising position and is arguing that both the left and the right have gone too far in their rhetoric and policy. He starts by mainly describing what he sees as the left’s failures, but toward the end makes it clear that the right has also failed to compromise because of a “border first” position–in other words, the Wall. I have seen a lot of people use selective quotes from Schumer and other Dems to argue that there is no difference between their old positions and Trump’s–I’m not saying you’re doing that, Jack, but I’m getting in before anyone else does. I don’t hear anything in this speech about giant border walls spanning the entire border, family separation, zero tolerance for border crossers, turning away or detaining people seeking asylum, massive raids, indefinite detention, or banning citizens from entire nations from immigrating, which are all the Trump policies regarding immigration that have drawn the most ire. So while I am much more liberal on immigration than Schumer is, I would love to see Republicans hew closer to his stances on this issue than to Trump’s.

Trump’s top immigration official also spoke rather candidly about immigration yesterday, revealing his loathing of American values and certain types of immigrants:

“Would you also agree that Emma Lazarus’s words etched on the Statue of Liberty, ‘Give me your tired, give me your poor,’ are also a part of the American ethos?” NPR’s Rachel Martin asked Cuccinelli on “Morning Edition” in an interview published Tuesday.

“They certainly are: ‘Give me your tired and your poor who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge,'” he replied. “That plaque was put on the Statue of Liberty at almost the same time as the first public charge was passed — very interesting timing.”

Of course that poem was referring back to people coming from Europe where they had class-based societies, where people were considered wretched if they weren’t in the right class, and it was written one year after the first federal public charge rule was written,” he added later.

The fringe of the right-wing has been saying the quiet part out loud for a while for so long now that they’ve moved to positions of power. We are now told by the top immigration official in the country that our values should not extend to poor immigrants, and maybe shouldn’t even be extended to non-European (non-white) immigrants either. This is pure bigotry and it’s against everything our country stands for. America is supposed to be a refuge–that’s how it was founded and that’s how it should remain. People like Trump and Cuccinelli don’t believe in that, because they only believe in power for themselves and people who look like them. Every American should stand against them.

You know, the Colbert clips are as much as I can take of that man, and even they will be clicked ahead. Either another denture adjustment is in order, or his senility advances apace.

A little domestic terrorism, a foundering global economy we can weather. I just hope nobody decides to pounce on our leaderless state.
