Dred Scott Decision Determined by Democrat Justice

by Jack

As his statue is being torn down from in front of the capitol building in Maryland, I wondered who Justice Taney was?   Turns out he was a very active democrat, a slave owner in the northern state of Maryland and he cast the deciding vote in the infamous Dred Scott decision.  I would not have know that if it were not for his statue being in the news.  But, I suppose that getting rid of it helps sanitize the history of the democrat party.   Pretty soon ol Taney will be virtually unknown and then history can be re-written for political expediency.   Yep, I can sure understand why democrats would want this statue taken down.

Ironically, the descendants of the Scotts and Taneys families prefer the opportunity for reconciliation by erecting statues of Dred Scott and Frederick Douglass to stand in position of dialogue with the Taney statue.  That seems very reasonable, but local dems say no.  Statue must go.

Roger Brooke Taney March 17, 1777 – October 12, 1864, he was the fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, holding that office from 1836 until his death in 1864. He delivered the majority opinion in Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857).

In Dred Scott v. Sandford, a slave named Dred Scott had appealed to the Supreme Court in hopes of being granted his freedom based on his having been brought by his masters to live in free territories. The Taney Court ruled that persons of African descent could not be, nor were ever intended to be, citizens under the U.S. Constitution, and thus the plaintiff (Scott) was without legal standing to file a suit. The framers of the Constitution, Taney wrote, believed that blacks “had no rights which the white man was bound to respect; and that the negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit. The court also declared the Missouri Compromise (1820) unconstitutional, thus permitting slavery in all of the country’s territories. Taney died during the final months of the American Civil War on the same day that his home state of Maryland abolished slavery.

Yes, that’s right, Maryland fought for the North and was also slave state.  If the civil war was just about abolishing slavery why would Maryland have done that?

This case perfectly exemplifies the times. Slavery had been around for centuries. As abhorrent as it is to us now, we must remember that it was accepted practice in the times. This wasn’t a black and white issue. All the people’s of the earth had engaged in this practice. But still, the people that had united behind the idea of freedom and justice for all were struggling with it. A huge barrier had to be overcome to make real the original vision of the founders. The awful Dred Scott decision was a last gasp in a dying ancient practice. Americans were pressing for what they believed was right. Nothing that is ingrained in the human psyche is easily overcome. Add to this horrendous struggle the fact that the South could not compete without cheap labor and the reality that the Northern states had power to impose punishing conditions.

Good timely article on this at the American Thinker.

A interesting article from the Chicago Tribune, maybe some are waking up to the fact that the removal of historical landmarks may leave a gap in American history.

Out of sight out of mind, really? or more likely just some DNC supported “PC c$%p” liberals are promoting to hopefully disrupt the WH from leading America away from the failure’s of Obama’s administration, (and more of the same from Hillary was not going to unify America one bit.)

We may be currently ideologically spilt as a country, mostly because of Obama’s words and polices, but I do believe the Liberals are more afraid that Trump will create a untied country more than anything else. .

They may now also realize that this will bite them also, as did Obamas reign, and people will rediscover the Democratic party was the party for the support of slavery and that the Republican Party were the abolitionist’s of slavery.

So why do liberals fight so hard to divide us even more, they need the dividedness to hold office!

Another outstanding AT article that expressed my same issues with the GOP.

“What is a nation who has been lied to by both parties supposed to do? What is the base of the GOP going to do?

I don’t know, but I do know I’ve never seen the center right base so disgusted and angry at its own. GOP: Trust me, the base hasn’t left Trump, but it has left you. It’s not official yet, but the avalanche is about to begin. The anger is going to boil over. Upon you. GOP: you’re not going to like it, but you have no one to blame but yourselves.”

Trump’s Unintended Consequences: The Republican Party Reveals Itself:
    By David Prentice

“I think that the Sermon on the Mount applies to the vast majority of Republican Party officialdom right now.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”

The Republican Party once was the party of conservatives. It still is the only place any conservative can be elected in today’s political world. So far. Unfortunately, the party of Reagan has disappeared. Trump did not make them disappear, but his improbable run, and win, has revealed who the party really is.

    And it ain’t pretty.

It’s been apparent for a while that they are the stupid party. But I never thought they were this stupid.

It’s been apparent for a long time they had Stockholm Syndrome. Captured by the left, they have been cowed into being spineless mushes afraid to be called names. But I never thought it was this bad.

It’s been apparent for a while this is a party interested in taking a back seat, as long as they get money, perks, and some kind of fame. But I never thought it was this corrupt.

Something has gone very wrong since Trump ascended. And it’s not him. He’s virtually the only one trying to do the right things. At this point, it’s clear we have a combination of sick factions in the GOP, and none of them give a damn about the party’s voters, none of them give a damn about the principles they claim to have stood for in the past years, and none of them have a clue about what they are doing.

What has this party done since Trump saved their bacon, keeping them in the majority, saving them from becoming a worthless second fiddle to a corrupt Hillary? Nothing. Just nothing. And now worse than nothing. I am not the first to say this, but let’s be clear, the GOP has become a party of spineless wimps and frauds. They have betrayed half of America, betrayed the base that once supported them so well, and also betrayed their country.

They have been watching fecklessly as the left is destroying the agenda they were sent to put into place. They have been sitting on their hands while the left has been destroying their own party’s president, not only doing nothing, but often actively helping the left in their attempts to take him down.

They allowed this nonsense of Russia!Russia!Russia! to fester, knowing it was nonsense (and yes, it’s provable that they all knew). None of them stepped up to the plate to tell the left, the media, the public and the world that it was an asinine construct that had no evidence and simply wasn’t true.

Instead of actively coming against this pack of lies, they sat on their hands and let the dumbest narrative ever pressed into American politics fester into something almost half of the country psychotically believes. They also sat on their hands as the left attacked Trump, his cabinet, and his family about anything and everything. They watched like sheep as the agenda we voted has been neutered, all the while they, the GOP, were doing nothing, nothing at all.

It’s been a deadly mix of laziness, Stockholm Syndrome, and spineless, unprincipled crap. Add to that a few more ingredients: money grubbing from donors (who did not want what their voters wanted), along with the simple faithless actions of a lot of them. They were hoping against hope that their friends the #NeverTrumps would finally prevail and be able to say they told us so. Add the renewed iciness of their own base toward their party, and………

You have mixed a toxic drink that could virtually leave the GOP in shambles.”

  4. Libby says:

I can’t believe this is how you spent your weekend … as an apologist for the Confederacy … which was hideously racist.

    • Tina says:

What makes you think this was the only thing that occupied our time?

“I can’t believe…you spent your weekend … as an apologist for the Confederacy

Sure you can Libby! You spend your time here as an apologist for socialism whose leaders were murderous totalitarians responsible for destroying the lives of millions of people:

I calculate that the Communist regime, 1917-1987, murdered about 62,000,000 people, around 55,000,000 of them citizens (see Table 1.1 for a periodization of the deaths).

As for Stalin, when the holes in Conquest’s estimates are filled in, I calculate that Stalin murdered about 43,000,000 citizens and foreigners, over twice Conquest’s total. Therefore, the usual estimate of 20 million killed in Soviet democide is far off for the Soviet Union per se, and even less than half of the total Stalin alone murdered.

But, these are all statistics and hard to grasp. Compare my total of 62,000,000 for the Soviet Union and 43,000,000 for Stalin to the death from slavery of 37,000,000 during the 16th to the 19th century; or to the death of from 25,000,000 to 75,000,000 in the Black Death (bubonic plague), 1347-1351, that depopulated Europe.

Another way of looking at this is that the annual risk of a person under Soviet control being murdered by the regime was 1 out of 222. But, compare — the annual risk of anyone in the world dying from war was 1 out of 5,556, from smoking a pack of cigarettes a day was 1 out of 278, from any cancer was 1 out of 357, or for an American to die in an auto accident was 1 out of 4,167.[1]

Now, I must ask, with perhaps an unconscious touch of outrage in my voice, why is this death by Marxism, so incredible and significant in its magnitude, unknown or unappreciated compared to the importance given slavery, cancer deaths, auto accident deaths, and so on. Especially, especially I must add again, when unlike cancer, auto accidents, and smoking, those deaths under Marxism in the Soviet Union were intentionally caused? They were murdered.

The slavery stats above only represent black slaves taken to England and American during a specific period. We could never calculate the numbers of people of all races dragged from their homes or concurred in war and made slaves.

Perspective…and the whole truth, Libby. It matters.

Your party likes to do this divide and concur crap. People are beginning to see it for what it is. Your party uses people like props to smear and target the opposition. Disgusting! Destructive! Stooooooopid.
