State of Jefferson Gains A Major Ally

By Terry Raposa

The notion of carving out a 51st state — Jefferson — from California’s northernmost counties has been the talk of the North State since the Siskiyou County supervisors declared their desire for a fresh start back in September. As a practical idea, though, it’s always seemed far-fetched.

At least one Californian, however, is thinking even more ambitiously. One new state? Why stop there? How about five?
Timothy Draper, a successful retired venture capitalist, announced last week that he is polishing the final details but plans to file an initiative seeking to break California up into six separate states. Silicon Valley would go independent (and claim the name). So would Jefferson, which the draft initiative sees spreading across 14 rural northern counties. The initiative also provides that counties could join the new state residents choose.

Why six states? California, instead of two senators in Washington, would have 12 and thus more representation in Congress. Breaking up the “monopoly” of state government and creating competition would allow more innovative government and a “fresh start.” And smaller states would be more responsive to local needs.
Go figure. The tech investor sounds a lot like the folks at the tea party.

Breaking up the state remains an improbable venture. Who knows if this Silicon Valley-based initiative will develop beyond “vaporware”? But don’t be surprised if the Jefferson boosters suddenly find themselves with a patron and a champion.

State’s Will Be Downsized Says Experts

by Jack Lee

According to a new book just released, America 3.0, the days of a strong centralized goverment that has a one size fits all mentality is doomed and a new decentralized system is in the making.

John B. Wells was joined by experts on society, history, and culture, James Bennett and Mike Lotus, who discussed how America is currently going through a painful transition period, but our best days may be yet to come. “The current crisis we are in is not the demise of America,” Lotus contended, suggesting that the present polarization of society is a pang experienced by the nation as it transforms into something new as the populace grapples with how to adjust to this evolution.

Driving the transformation of America, they argued, is the breakdown of our current system of government, particularly the “welfare state model,” which has shown to be unsustainable going into the future. Their idea is that states that are too large must be broken down into smaller states to bring government closer to the people and therefore more accountable and more responsive. The effeciency of smaller, more connected state governments will lead to cost savings while still keeping the federal model in place, using what works and tossing out what doesn’t. The pair solidly stand behind the idea of CA splitting into two states and possibly more. They see this as ineveitable if the people are ever going to regain proper representation. Many CA would agree, seeing our state as basically ungovernable in it’s present configuration.

While the authors were concerned about the increase in police militarization and government spying, they suggested that these trends are symptomatic of systemic failure which they see happening to the country. Bennett explained that as a political system breaks down, it sees diminishing returns from its usual practices which leads to people in power to “double down” on their tactics in an attempt to maintain the status quo.

Lotus dismissed the notion that the United States is not headed toward a “1930’s like Nazi takeover scenario,” since America has historically been resistant to totalitarian government or fascist political parties. Additionally, he surmised that transforming America into dictatorship would require “massive support” and could not be done via a small coup or executive order.

Ultimately, the duo predicted widespread positive changes for America that could come into effect within the next 30 years as the transition to ‘America 3.0’ blooms.

Lotus anticipates the end of a large, centralized federal government in favor of one which focuses on its “core functions,” such as defense and maintaining free trade throughout the country. Ensuring this promising future for America comes to fruition, Lotus stressed, requires “replacing the things that aren’t working, repairing the things that are worth saving and preparing ourselves for a better future.”

Bruce Road – Too Dangerous for Bicyclists

by Jack Lee

Bruce rdFor years rural Bruce road has been an important leg of the spring Wildflower Bicycle Race. It’s also the only connection for the bike path starting at Little Chico Creek estates, and works it’s way behind the Hank Marsh Jr. High School and eventually goes under the freeway and ends on Humbolt a few blocks from Main Street (an access the downtown).

Bruce Rd. is an key corridor for bicyclists and it’s become increasingly popular for cars traversing from the Skyway to East Ave. in the morning commute and back again for the evening commute. What Bruce Rd. is not, is safe.

If you have ever had an occassion to travel Bruce from the Skyway to Hwy 32 on a bicycle you will soon become very aware of the various choke points where slow moving bicycles are forced to share the pavement with fast moving cars or take to a loose, rocky shoulder and risk a spill. There are some areas of Bruce Rd. that are so narrow a bicyclist and a fast moving vehicle are separated by mere inches, even if the bicyclist is on the road’s rocky shoulder. (See picture above) Unless I’m forced into it I won’t ride my bike on Bruce Rd. It was so dangerous at one point I had to dismount and walk my bike carefully along the edge of the road as traffic flashed past me, just north of the stop light at Picholine Way.

As the traffic flow increases on Bruce, so do the odds that we will have a fatal between a bicyclist and a car. Why it hasn’t happened before now has simply been a matter of luck. Of all the places around Chico that need improvement for public safety I believe Bruce Rd. ranks right at the top. A copy of this article will be sent to our City Council, but adding your voice couldn’t hurt!

Obama, HHS Changes the ACA Rules…Again!

by Tina

Uh oh…looks like Obamacare’s healthcare mess will just keep rolling along. HHS made an announcement that they had, “significantly relaxed the rules of the federal health-care law for millions of consumers whose individual insurance policies have been canceled,” saying they can “buy bare-bones plans or entirely avoid a requirement that most Americans have health coverage.”

This comes on the heels of another relaxation of the rules wherein insurers are now forced “to provide retroactive, discounted coverage to the many Americans who are about to lose their insurance plans ”

Huh? So now we don’t have to buy official Obamacare plans and retroactive discounted plans will be available but only if our plans were cancelled?

Does this law have any teeth left, legally speaking?

Patients with chronic conditions have been thrown into chaos along with their healthcare providers. Insurance companies are now wondering if they will need a bailout because of this edict and because the number of enrollees they were promised are just not materializing. Some of them made a “corporatist deals” with the administration and now they think they might deserve a bailout? It will serve those who made the deal right if the administration tosses them under the bus. But the insurance companies that refused to play the game will be harmed too. Ultimately, as always, it is the consumer/patient that will pay. In fact, none of us will escape damage from this massive debacle.

Happy New Year? Doubt it!

Split the State Movement Gaining Momentum (latest update)

Posted by Jack

Open letter. . .

To: Redding Record Searchlight, Redding.com

Mr. Ross,

Newspapers like the Searchlight, Bee and Chronicle continue to help make Jefferson a reality. Our movement is only ninety days old, yet one Field Poll shows affirmation with 28 percent of the vote. This number continues to increase over time. The Searchlight’s polls show us at around 60 percent in favor of State Split. The evidence for dramatic action is clear. The conversation is shifting to the real issues which face the North State. California is mired in almost one half Trillion in debt. No one knows the total of California’s unfunded liabilities. We have no effective representation in the North State. These are facts which, “the people”, are in a position to remedy.

More Committees forming. More people who want to hear what is possible if we act together, if we act now. More Inquires from San Diego to Oregon. More County governments interested in separation. We wear negativity of news outlets such as yours, like a badge of honor. People grow tired of news which is more editorial than truth. The word continues to spread and gain support with or without publications like yours. You risk making yourselves irrelevant, by ignoring or misrepresenting the truth.

The truth is plain to anyone with eyes and ears. The economic Ship called California is sinking. California has been on the same course for fifty years. Shall we continue to do the same things for another 50? Representation is the key to effective government. We have none.

The Time Has Come For 51

What A Stupid, Unnecessary Arrest!

by Jack Lee

diplomat45A female Indian diplomat, Devyani Khobragade(shown left), was arrested for deliberately falsifying the wages of a female employee on a U.S. visa application. The Obama Administration claims the female employee was a virtual slave forced to work for almost nothing.

Speaking on Khobragade’s arrest, “They were trying to humiliate her and flex their muscle, and they succeeded in doing that,” Dan Arshack, lawyer for Khobragade. But, the attorney for the housekeeper whom Khobragade is accused of underpaying said Arshack is the one who doesn’t have the facts straight. Regardless it was the manner in which this case was handled which is the primary concern.

Khobragade, India’s deputy consul general in New York, was arrested and strip-searched last week on charges of visa fraud related to her treatment of her housekeeper, who has been publicly identified as Sangeeta Richard.

The charges are serious, but not so serious that they could not have been handled with a summons. A summons could have been issued to Khobragade giving her a date to appear in court. At that time she could have presented her defense and the case would have been either settled or she would be bound over for trial. This would have been reasonable and it would have avoided all this flat about the way she was treated in custody.

The stupidest thing that could have been done was to arrest the diplomat on a warrant, take her into custody in hand cuffs and strip search her then toss her in with other inmates. Anyone in the Obama Administration, with half a brain, should have known an arrest handled this way of a diplomat would serious consequences, that it would blow up into an international foreign crisis, and it could have caused American deaths in India. The outcome on that one is still pending as unrest in India grows. This diplomatic debacle has now shifted the focus away from the alleged criminal violation.

India-U.S. relations remain tense after this arrest. “This type of fraud on the United States and exploitation of an individual will not be tolerated,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry plans to discuss the issue Thursday with Indian External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid.

The case has sparked outrage among conflicting camps: those slamming her treatment as “barbaric” and those saying the real issue is the alleged mistreatment of domestic workers.

Already the Obama Administration is starting to back peddle on the arrest. Secretary of State John Kerry expressed deep “regret” over the situation, but without saying the United States had done anything wrong. And technically we haven’t, we just should have taken an alternate path that would have accomplished the mission, but without creating an international incident. For that monstrous bungling, the Obama Administration must take full responsibility.

This was absolutely uncalled for because it was so recklessly and stupidly handled. You would think we’ve never had to deal with a foreign diplomat before! What a bunch of rank amateurs we have running this country. It’s incredibly embarassing to watch the Obama Administration create one crisis after another, at this rate it’s likely going to go down as the most incompetent administration in history.

More on this story from a friend and journalist of Khobragade, “The nanny, Sangeeta Richard, who was hired by Devyani, was to be paid $4500 per month (US minimum wage). In other words, the charge against Devyani is that she paid at a rate of a mere $3.31 per hour to her domestic help when she should have paid thrice that amount to remain safe in the US – legally and diplomatically.

But the question is how can Khobragade pay her nanny $ 4500 per month when she is being paid $ 4120 per month, a point that has been stated by her father Uttam Khobragade, a retired IAS officer. It is an important point which Washington needs to take into consideration, because this is not India’s story alone.

Besides, the US owes it to the world and come out clean with statistics as to how many countries actually respect the $4500 bottom line for diplomatic corps’ salaries and how many diplomats of various countries it has proceeded against on this count.

Khobragade has been charged with visa fraud, an allegation that is yet to be proved. Even if proven, is it a charge grave enough to handcuff a diplomat and put her into jail?”

UPDATE: Devyani Khobragade, who was arrested and strip-searched by US marshals, was on Wednesday shifted to the Permanent Mission of India (PMI) at the United Nations in New York. The transfer gives her all diplomatic privileges and immunity under the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations which she did not enjoy as a consular officer.

Record Number of Americans Say Big Government the Bigger Threat

Posted by Tina.

A gallup pole conducted December 18th found that a record number of Americans believe government is a bigger threat than either business or labor:

PRINCETON, NJ — Seventy-two percent of Americans say big government is a greater threat to the U.S. in the future than is big business or big labor, a record high in the nearly 50-year history of this question. The prior high for big government was 65% in 1999 and 2000. Big government has always topped big business and big labor, including in the initial asking in 1965, but just 35% named it at that time. >\

Since 2009 when Obama took office the percentage of people who fear and distrust government has grown steadily “…from 55% in March 2009 to 64% in November 2011 and 72% today.”

Geez if we’d only listened to that 35% in 1965 we might not be in the soup today.

U.S. Company Boeing Lost $4.5 Billion Contract Because of NSA Spying

Posted by Tina

PJ Media:

The U.S. lost a fighter jet contract with Brazil worth $4.5 billion in the wake of the South American country’s anger over revelations that President Obama’s intelligence agencies spied on the personal communications of President Dilma Rousseff.

Boeing was considered to be the front-runner for the contract with its F/A-18 Super Hornet until the leak from former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden.

Think of the job security for union members wrapped up in all that money.
