Chico Council Chambers to Become a Homeless Daycare Center?

by Jack

As you know the Chico City Council Chambers doesn’t get much use, except for council meetings a few times a month and maybe a few civic events, all in the evenings. Well, I have an idea, I think we should open it up during the day time as a sort of adult daycare center for Chico’s homeless! It has nice seats, carpeting and it’s air conditioned. If a large screen TV was placed where the council sits it could provide hours of clean, safe entertainment for our homeless while keeping them off the street and out of trouble!

The bathrooms there are under-used too and that gives me yet another great idea! The homeless could wash their clothing in the sinks or they could use the big fountain outside for bathing in the warm summer sun. This would save us a ton of money too, because we would not be faced with building an adult daycare center as has been proposed, we just need to turn the existing city council chambers into one! A win-win.

But, why stop there? Right next door is city hall. It’s new, it’s modern, it’s air condition too! And the lobby has plenty of room to accommodate at least a 100 homeless who could stretch out on their bedrolls while enjoying the cool air conditioning during our hot summer! The city employee bathrooms could serve a number of purposes, from more shelter space to washrooms. And garbage cans in restrooms and the lobby are very convenient for the collection of beer and wine bottles that the homeless could sell to recyclers! And the really good part, it wouldn’t cost us much more than we’re already spending.

If we removed the art work and those potted plants I bet we could get another 25 to 30 homeless in the city hall lobby! So, what do you think, sound like a winner? I knew you would like it!

I say the homeless should move in with Scwab, the Grundler, Chris and Libby. I know their bleeding hearts will be more than happy to take them in.

Good idea, what could also be covenant for the homeless needs would be a place to put their agglomerated supply carts, you know the ones that are generously on loan by different businesses charity through out our city. We could put up a cart tender using one of the ‘Council members only’ parking spaces. This also would help the homeless from accidentally damaging city vehicles with said stray carts.

I would only hope the council members would get to future council meeting a hour or two early to clean up the chambers, you know like business owners in the downtown area have to do in the mornings to help maintain a clean store front.

We may have to put in a “reserved seating” area in the chambers though, just so the door ways and halls do not get to congested with sprawled regulars.

I am not sure that removing the plants is a good idea, just in case say the bathrooms in city hall might be, oh just lets say impacted! the plants could serve as natural urinals.

Oh and we could install a plastic bag recycling bin, and use the bags to pick up the dog(hopefully)poop they may accidental not notice their animals left behind, win win again!

Jack, I think your on to something here!

Excellent idea, Jack! That way, the esteemed Councilmembers could get a whiff up close and personal to those they seem to want to move to Chico with the continuing “services” they provide . . . . .
