Butte County to Ban Fracking

by Jack

The supervisors wouldn’t waste their time holding hearings and crafting an ordinance to ban the practice of fracking when there’s no oil to be fracked would they? Well, seems supervisors are doing just that to take a stand symbolic stand against fracking!

Not having a fracking ordinance to stop these dirty frackers is like not having a paper bag ban! We couldn’t live without it! Can you imagine going through life without a paper bag ban to help you shop correctly? How we’ve gone this long without a fracking ban is nothing short of a fracking injustice.

Good job Butte County!

Butte County and the rest of the North State is destined to always be an economic wasteland.

It’s a Fracking shame…a county run by unreasonable fear and loathing of a material that occurs in nature and that has provided enormous benefits to mankind and insured an amazingly high standard of living (pre-O-man).

Think of all the products and services that rely on this substance and the energy source it provides.

    Consider the medical field:

Crude oil is refined into several grades of petroleum. Petroleum is the base material from which plastic is formed. Plastic is used in almost every facet of medicine, from the plastic bottles that contain your prescription, to the plastic wrapper used to keep surgical instruments sanitary until procedure, to the glasses you wear when you are undergoing any kind of dental exam.

Further, crude oil is refined into the petroleum that powers the ambulance that transports people to the hospital – or, in some cases, the helicopter – it’s also used in some power plants to generate electricity, and it is often the fuel source that provides backup power to the hospital in the event that there is a failure in the main power grid.

    How about food:

According to researchers at the University of Michigan’s Center for Sustainable Agriculture, an average of more than 7 calories of fossil fuel is burned up for every calorie of energy we get from our food. This means that in eating my 400-calorie breakfast, I will, in effect, have consumed 2,800 calories of fossil fuel energy. (Some researchers claim the ratio is as high as 10 to 1.)

But this is only an average. My cup of coffee gives me just a few calories of energy, but to process 1 pound of coffee requires more than 8,000 calories of fossil-fuel energy — the equivalent energy found in nearly a quart of crude oil, 30 cubic feet of natural gas or about 2 1/2 pounds of coal.

People that believe we can do without this stuff are delusional. Not in my backyard isn’t smart.

Tina, I look at this proposed ordinance against fracking like the no nukes law in Chico. But, you make a good point about the mindset behind it. What a silly thing for the supes to waste time on.
