If this is true, why are blue states (for the most part) net contributors to the U.S. economy, while red states (for the most part) are net takers?

Re *1 Chris: More silly political garbage from the master of garbage. Evidently he did not bother to read the caveats.

“The graphic defines Republican states as those “that have voted Republican in a previous presidential election.” Because the data is from 2005, that means states that voted for George W. Bush in 2004, which is a larger number than voted Republican in 2008.

“But the definition of states as Republican or Democratic isn’t immutable. Just four years later, in the 2008 election, six states in the right-hand chart and three states in the left-hand chart switched from Republican to Democratic, making both charts more heavily blue.

“We should also note that some of the margins of victory were quite narrow. In fact, a dozen or more states can be characterized in most elections as swing states, which might be more appropriately shaded in purple.”

Chris, your source is more than three years old. Here are more current articles.

Republican governors taking comfort in improving economic conditions: (Jan. 2014)

    United States gubernatorial elections, 2014:

“All totaled, the Republicans had a net gain of two seats (giving them 31 total), the Democrats had a net loss of three seats (leaving them with 17 total), and an independent picked up one seat. Due to no candidate receiving 50% of the vote, the Vermont General Assembly will elect their governor in January 2015.”

We’ll have to wait a few years to see how these states do with their new Republican governors.

Thanks for pointing out the caveats, Pie and Peggy.

Yes, it is reductive to simply say that “blue states support red states” without more context. But isn’t it just as reductive, if not more so, to say that “conservatives could exist and live quite well without liberals?” Isn’t such a statement pretty hard to prove, not to mention divisive and petty?

I know plenty of conservatives I couldn’t live without and a few liberals I couldn’t live without. Memes like this only spread division at a time when we need more unity.
