Vacation in Mexico? Don’t Be Stupid

Posted by Jack

Radio talk show host George Noory — host of Coast to Coast — had his vacation plans unexpectedly changed into escape plans when the limousine he was supposed to be taking ended up being driven by a would-be kidnapper. Here’s the segment from Noory’s show explaining the incident:

The incident, Noory says, began when a limousine style van picked him up at the airport, purporting to be his transportation to his hotel. On the way, Noory noticed that the van was taking him through a less-than-savory area of Mexico and that the driver was behaving oddly. When Noory tried to exit the van, the door handle broke off in his hand. Only through a real stroke of luck was he able to get away by hailing another car and paying the driver $100 in cash.

Noory’s ordeal has been described by law enforcement officials as an “express kidnapping,” meaning a kidnapping where someone is picked up by a van and driven around to various ATMs, where they are forced to empty their bank accounts at gun point.

Police in Cancun and other tourists sport are also known for fleecing tourists.   Get slightly off the beaten path and get stopped and the cops will rob you of your money.  Sometimes they force you to an ATM and make a max withdrawl and this is done under threat of arrest or worse.   Robbing tourists and kidnapping for ransome is big business in the tourist places.  Then there are the regular thugs and cartels, Mexico is a dangerous place for the unwary and sometimes even for professionals in the security business.

Why would you ever want to risk that kind of danger for a cheap vacation?

Was a travel agent for 21 years – surviving 21 years of airfare wars. Quit recommending Mexico in the late 70’s or early 80’s due to a combination of Mexican goofernment corruption, and disliking to be searched on roads by teenage “Federales” carrying Uzis.
Hasn’t gotten any better since then, and you still get Montezuma’s revenge.

Tourists have plenty of choices when it comes to vacations, but Mexico should be crossed off your list.

Hello Mexico has been doing this for years.

For five years in a row back in the 90s a group of friends and I went for a week vacation to Puerto Vallarta and had a wonderful time each year. We stayed in the old part of town in an old hotel that was beautiful and lovingly made by hand and not machines. All of us were single and most of us were women and the hotel staff went out of their way to make sure we were always safe and watched over us. Once one of the guys in our group was stopped from entering the hotel because he looked Hispanic. They explained they didn’t want someone off of the street sneaking in with us. We understood and expressed our thanks for their security measures.

The people were all wonderful and the venders selling their goods on the beach became our friends too and would just come by to spend time with us. We could order the best chocolate and apple pies from Georgia and she’d deliver them the next day for us all to enjoy.

I love Mexico and treasure my fond memories and the wild adventures I had through the rain forest jungle in rented jeeps. Seeing the Federales patrolling the beaches and streets with their rifles was always a comfort because they were there for our protection as long as we obeyed their laws, which we always did.

Would I go back today? No. But, I wouldn’t go back to Europe or any other country either. The world has changed and not for the better.

I have friends who fish in Baha and Baha Sur California every year. All over from Cabo San Lucas to tiny dirt road backwater places on the east and west cape. They fish from the beach, from small pangas, to large deep sea fishing vessels and have never had a problem.

I won’t call George Noory a prevaricator, but I don’t believe anything he says and I don’t believe anything his guests say. The same for Art Bell, although Art Bell was (and is) far more fun and interesting than Noory, even though Bell made me wince too.

It all depends on where you go in Mexico. I have seen the good the bad and the ugly. Use to work sister cities with Mexico. I have been escorted to places with protection. It is a dangerous country and nowhere near a democratic state of mind. They do like tourist money though.

Kinda sweet really. Bet they don’t have a clue as to what a Bernie administration would mean to them or their neighbors. I know they’ve got the “dream” down pat but the reality, nah!
