SOTU: A Very “Presidential” Address

Posted by Tina

President Trump stood before the American people tonight to speak about the progress we’ve made toward the goals he promised as a candidate for his office. The report card was impressive. But much of his speech centered around the undying spirit of the American people and it’s defenders and it was clear from the start that it is the people that Trump credits. As to our political leaders, he made it clear they are placed in office to be responsive and serve all of the people and to protect the Constitution and American values. The President also outlined his plans for the coming year. Help me fill in the details guys…

(I didn’t watch the Democrat response. The tone of it had already been conveyed by those present in their defiant faces and rigid bodies. How ungracious they are!)

Your thoughts?

  1. Harold says:

Although I didn’t have time to watch it all, I was able to view about 30 minutes .

The Dem’s clearly displayed their childlike resistance to making America a great Country once more. Most likely because President Trump has achieved so much in spite of their undermining actions.

Every once in a awhile, a Dem would stand and applaud, breaking from the “Pelosi position” of a sphincter so tightly puckered she was stuck to her seat. Even Schumer stood on occasion, but I believe that was more a PC photo op BS than any real support of what was being conveyed by President Trump.

As long as Dem’s continue to disrespect their elected positions by being anal stubborn verse actually preforming the job they were elected too in finding ideological compromise in resolving Americas issues, President Trump will just keep on his path of making America work again with or without them.

Pelosi and Schumer can continue to act the fools they have proven themselves to be, while ignoring any real effort to resolve things, and play their game of trying to advance their one-upsmanship mentality, President Trump can, will and has guided America to a much stronger position than it was a year ago.

    • Tina says:

Harold your description of the Democrats couldn’t be more apt!

It was fairly disturbing to see our leftist representatives scowl and sit rigidly in protest and resistance as the President described rising pay, low unemployment for minorities, and getting MS13 off our streets! When they can’t even celebrate the things that are making life better for Americans they have truly lost their way. Imagine! The Black Caucus frowned at the fantastic news that more blacks now have jobs!

They also looked pretty stupid when the President offered them a deal on the “Dreamers” that included a million more (1.8 million) than Obama wanted…scowls and boos in protest. The President is right they don’t want to make a deal and will not work in “bipartisan” fashion. If they can’t get the credit they won’t play. It’s the votes they want. What self serving p&#@kS!

But I don’t think their anti-Trump (anti-America-anti-the people) tactics are working for them. How does anyone get excited about such petty negativity? FOX reported this morning that 43% of Democrats polled liked what the President had to say last night.

    • Libby says:

Well, now, Harold … it’s all a matter of perspective, now isn’t it?

      https://www.politico.com/story/2018/01/30/trump-state-of-the-union-2018-democrats-pelosi-377930

In fact, Nancy was quite stern with the troops: “If you’re not going to behave yourself, don’t show up.” And if you’re talking public decorum, there is an argument to be made that it was the Repugs who behaved like they were at a Dead Concert, bouncing all over the place … in an effort to make the speech look like more than it was.

      Tacky, I call it.

      • Tina says:

        You would…sore loser!

        Tacky is:

        1. Refusing to attend (15 was the number I heard) like spoiled children.

        2. Walking out’ cause you can’t stand to hear shouts of pride expressed about the “U.S.A.”

        3. Frowning and booing at the news that black and Hispanic unemployment has hit record lows.

        4. Grumpy scowls at the news that Americans get to keep more of what they earn and companies are giving bonuses, higher wages, and greater opportunity.

        5. Moody grimacing at the news that Trump is willing to offer legal status to a million more “dreamers” than Obama suggested as a cooperative effort of bipartisan compromise….and more.

Tacking is voting AGAINST the American people in favor of the Democrat Party.

Yours is the party of divisiveness and hatred…the flag has been raised and is now clear for all to see. SHAME on all of you!

  2. J. Soden says:

Listened to it on TV while watching comments on Twitter and Gab.ai so I didn’t see the disgusting Demwits and their sit-down responses.
Plenty of comments on Pelosi and her apparent denture failure . . . and many pointed out that the Clowngressional Black Caucus couldn’t even stand when TheDonald mentioned the lowest Black unemployment numbers in our history!

Some Frank Luntz Tweets last night:

“This speech represents the presidential performance that Trump observers have been waiting for – brilliant mix of numbers and stories, humility and aggressiveness, traditional conservatism and political populism. Only one word qualifies: Wow.”

“Even in foreign policy and national security, this speech a perfect blend of strength and empathy. These heroic stories break our hearts, but sturdy our resolve. This is the Trump his voters wanted him to be.”

“Tonight, I owe Donald Trump an apology.
Tonight, I was moved and inspired. Tonight, I have hope and faith in America again. It may go away tomorrow… But tonight, America is great again.”

And they say it ALL! Well done Mr. President!!!!!

    • Tina says:

      Ditto, J!

Rush just pointed out that Trump didn’t mention the memo or the investigation and surrounding scandals. I can’t see any Democrat that would let an opportunity like that pass. He has more integrity in his little finger than most of them (no matter how much they try to pose as more gracious or thoughtful).

      More numbers of interest.

Trump credits the people! He used the words I, me, or my only 29 times in the speech. “We” he used profusely! Contrast that with narcissists Barack Obama and Bill Clinton who used “I” constantly and whose presidencies were all about them and maintaining power.

All the Democrats do is pander to groups and posture for political effect.

      • Chris says:

So you’re asking us to compare Trump’s use of first-person pronouns, which is 29 times in the SOTU, to Obama and Clinton’s use of first-person pronouns, which is…a lot.

Do you not see the problem in this comparison?

  3. Tina says:

Just read another ugly headline for Democrats: ACLU Complains: “Trump Used the Word ‘America’ More Than 80 Times”

    Let’s see…

    We live in America.

The President is president OF America.

    SOTU is about America.

And as the article states right off the bat, it’s the “American” Civil Liberties Union!

    What the he77!

The radical left has definitely gone off the deep end!

    • J. Soden says:

Saw a Tweet by Lars Larsen today identifying ACLU as “American Crooks and Lawyers Union.”
Hadn’t heard that one before, but very correctly descriptive!
Consider the source – then ignore it!

    • Libby says:

It is called “nationalist jingoism”. It is used exclusively by would-be and for-real despots, and it bodes ill for global peace and prosperity.

      • Tina says:

I’d rather be a strong “nation” of free people, and an example of freedom and prosperity for others around the world, than a slave to the phony socialist dream your party hawks constantly through divisive politics and hate.

Socialism is by it’s very nature the pathway to despotism…see Venezuela in it’s current state.

  4. Libby says:

Our President read what was written for him. Not one single mono-maniacal aside!

The performance bar for the office of President is right about down on the ground.

    • Tina says:

So you actually believe that Obama wrote every word he spoke and didn’t employ writers?

      Amazing…and delusional.

Speech writers consult with the president regarding talking points and study his style prior to submitting a rough draft for his approval and changes if any. It’s a process.

Reagan was intimately involved in writing his speeches but that was unusual. He was a prolific writer over many years as his papers later showed.

I’ll leave you with a few bits of info to ponder:

      Wikipedia, “Jon Favreau (speechwriter)”

In 2005, Obama’s communications director Robert Gibbs recommended Favreau to Obama as a speechwriter. Favreau was hired as Obama’s speechwriter shortly after Obama’s election to the United States Senate. Obama and Favreau grew close, and Obama referred to him as his “mind reader.” He went on the campaign trail with Obama during his successful presidential election campaign. In 2009, he was named to the White House staff as Director of Speechwriting. … He was the primary writer of Obama’s inauguration address of January 2009. The Guardian describes the process as follows: “The inaugural speech has shuttled between them [Obama and Favreau] four or five times, following an initial hour-long meeting in which the President-elect spoke about his vision for the address, and Favreau took notes on his computer. Favreau then went away and spent weeks on research. His team interviewed historians and speechwriters, studied periods of crisis, and listened to past inaugural orations. When ready, he took up residence in a Starbucks in Washington and wrote the first draft. … President Barack Obama works with Jon Favreau on the President’s Normandy speech aboard Air Force One en route to Paris on June 5, 2009

      NewsBusters:

On Monday’s edition of PBS’s Charlie Rose show the host invited on former Obama speechwriters David Litt, Jon Favreau and Jon Lovett to wax fondly about Obama’s “great” communication skills when it came to delivering both serious speeches and funny lines. When Lovett, now a writer in Hollywood, told Rose he was most proud of the “serious speeches” on the economy and health care, Favreau jokingly jabbed that Lovett was responsible for the now infamous lie about keeping your health insurance plan. Rose and the entire panel cracked up at the line. (see video)

The problem for you is that his “performance” was not what you expected. You were hoping for something to pounce on and there was only a positive attitude and goals that will serve ALL Americans…plus, a deal for the Dreamers which your party will foolishly fail to support. That wouldn’t have happened in Tip O’Neills day….tells you how low and far left the Democrat Party has moved.

    • Peggy says:

Oh Libby you really should take up being a stand up comic. You could start with Obama pronouncing our military “corpsmen” as if they were dead bodies.

Most people don’t write speeches with words they have no idea how to say, unless you’re BO and your followers believe he could walk on water and every word from his mouth is Allah blessed.

  5. J. Soden says:

Found this while browsing today and thought I’d pass it along. Doesn’t need a comment – it speaks for itself!

    Enigmas

    (1) Isn’t it weird that in America, our flag and our culture offend so many people, but our benefits don’t?

    (2) How can the federal government ask U.S. citizens to pay back student loans, when illegal aliens are receiving a free education?

    (3) Only in America are legal citizens labeled “racists” and “Nazis,” but illegal aliens are called “Dreamers”.

    (4) Liberals say, “If confiscating all guns saves just one life, it’s worth it”. Well then, if deporting all illegals saves just one life, wouldn’t that be worth it?

    (5) I can’t quite figure out how you can proudly wave the flag of another country, but consider it punishment to be sent back there.

    6) The Constitution: It doesn’t need to be rewritten, it needs to be reread.

    (7) William F. Buckley said: “Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other points of view, and are then shocked and offended when they discover there are other points of view.”

    (8) Joseph Sobran said: “‘Need’ now means wanting someone else’s money. ‘Greed’ means wanting to keep your own. ‘Compassion’ is when a politician arranges the transfer.”

    • Peggy says:

      May I suggest #9.

If a illegal breaks our laws they are given sanctuary and not deported so they can stay with their children to care for them. We are told it would be cruel to separate the family.

If a US citizen breaks our laws, they are sent to jail/prison and their children go into foster care.

Where’s the equal treatment for American “Dreamer?”

  6. Peggy says:

I watched it all on Fox along with 11.5 million other viewers. Fox came in #1 again while all of the other cable and network viewers ranged from 3.6-7.1. People have learned who to trust for the most accurate news.

    http://deadline.com/2018/01/donald-trump-state-of-the-union-ratings-cable-news-cnn-msnbc-fox-1202275329/

I agree with Newt who said Trump’s speech was equal to those given by Reagan. He was presidential and spoke of what he and his team had accomplished, what his vision for the future is and extended his hand across the aisle for Democrats to join them in restoring America for the people.

What the Democrats displayed was a pure hatred for Trump and our country. Mark Levin on his radio show last night explained their behavior as the finished product of a statist controlled party where individual thought is not allowed. Group think is their their governing style which was on full display with Pelosi, Schumer and the Black Caucus. If one of their members doesn’t follow the party’s mandates they are attacked until brought back in line or done away with.

The polls show the coast states scored him very low, while the central states scored him very high. Once again showing he’s talking to the blue collar hard working people and not the liberal elites who benefit from the taxes paid by those in the fly-over states.
Poll: 75 percent of voters approve of Trump’s State of the Union:

“Still, Trump outperformed among all these groups, with 97 percent of Republicans, 72 percent of independents and 43 percent of Democrats saying they approve. By contrast, a CBS poll released earlier this month found that only 33 percent of independents and 7 percent of Democrats approve of the job Trump is doing in office.
Sixty-five percent of those surveyed said Trump’s speech made them feel proud, 35 percent said safer, 21 percent said angry and 14 percent said it made them feel scared.

The poll found that voters were receptive to the president’s policy pitches, with 91 percent favoring a $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan, 75 percent voicing support for his national security outline and 72 percent saying they favor his immigration proposals.”

    • Libby says:

“Poll: 75 percent of voters approve of Trump’s State of the Union”

Actually, it was 60-some percent … of people who watched the speech … who approved.

You will overstate your position; but I will always be here to burst your bubble.

There doesn’t seem to be any bursting The Donald’s bubble though. Why does that man lie, repeatedly, about stuff it’s so easy to rebut? It’s pathetic … amusing, but pathetic.

I mean, aren’t you embarrassed to know that most of the people who tuned in were expecting him to make an ass of himself, yet again.

He didn’t. But is that something to be pleased about … that he did not make an ass of himself? The bar is truly down on the ground now.

      • Tina says:

NO, actually, it was, 75% of voters according to SF Gate: “Poll: 75% of Voters Approve of Trump’s State of the Union Address”

        USA Today agreed.

CBS stated it differently, “Three in four Americans who tuned in to President Trump’s State of the Union address tonight approved of the speech he gave. Just a quarter disapproved.” (still 75%, not 60%)

Why do you lie about things that are so easy to rebut?

Only sanctimonious sore loser lefties tuned in, “expecting him to make an ass of himself.”

Instead they were forced to watch as the entire Democrat body present made complete asses of themselves, which is fitting since they “lowered the bar” in the first place. The hateful, divisive, shameful dog and pony show in Ferguson is but one example. Just because they operate with big smiles and pretty language doesn’t mean they are of high integrity. Fool!

      • Peggy says:

Thanks again for the laugh Libby.

This was the title of the article. I didn’t write it.
“Poll: 75 percent of voters approve of Trump’s State of the Union:”

And write under neath the title you’ll see quotation marks to identifying I also didn’t write the content of the article.

AND after the last quotation mark is a link to the same article with the same title.

Libs: “You will overstate your position; but I will always be here to burst your bubble.”

Interesting piece by Ari Fleischer on one of the fired FBI “leaders.”

    http://thehill.com/opinion/judiciary/371902-my-call-with-andrew-mccabe-proves-he-should-have-left-the-fbi-long-ago

    Explains a LOT!

  9. Libby says:

OK. But I do carry the point on “people who tuned in” versus your “voters.”

And I note that you are ignoring the childish lying by your President about the number of people who tuned in. Can you do that for three more years? I mean, on our side of the road, whatever the man says will always be met with: “But the man’s a pathological liar.”

    • Tina says:

Libby I can ignore what you call “childish lying,” which could simply be the result of bad information fed to Trump, over the very serious lying in your party’s leadership any day of the week.

Your party invented pathological lying. But lying in general comes very easy. A few examples both recent and historical:

Bill: I did not have sex with that woman….

Hillary: “…did not send or receive any information that was marked classified at the time.”

Obama: “If you like your doctor…”

Harry Reid: Romney “didn’t pay his income taxes for ten years”

September 2012, The American Spectator, “The DNC’s Bold Lies”…give it a read. Your party denied/omitted it’s racist past in writing on the DNC website, claiming a long history defending civil rights. I mean come on…and entire century or more?

Your party is up to it’s eyeballs in lies, corruption, and criminality but you go ahead and concern yourself with matters involving trivial exaggeration and bragging.

    • Peggy says:

Speaking of “childish lying” let’s talk about Michelle Obama’s latest one about first ladies exchanging gifts. Watch as she presents a gift to Barbara Bush then goes on The Ellen show and say, “…. Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like, ‘OK. What am I supposed to do with this gift?’ Video included as proof.

We endured eight very long years of your O man and his wife’s pathological lies. Enjoy the next seven years of truth if you know what it is.

  10. Chris says:

I agree the speech was presidential. He spoke clearly, didn’t ramble, and avoided cheap shots.

The speech wasn’t very truthful, however, especially his claims about the diversity lottery and chain migration. Consult your friendly neighborhood fact-checker to see how Trump is still spreading lies about immigration in order to stoke xenophobic fears.
