Right after the Broward County school shooting, it was strongly suspicioned by many in law enforcement that the shooter was known to the FBI and they had an opportunity to intercede. Now it comes out that was exactly what happened. Today the FBI admitted they dropped the ball, but they are not being forth coming about where it went wrong and that ought to be made public!
“The FBI released the details in a statement conceding their employees did not follow protocol to follow up on this tip. ”Under established protocols, the information provided by the caller should have been assessed as a potential threat to life,” the statement said. “The information then should have been forwarded to the FBI Miami Field Office, where appropriate investigative steps would have been taken.”
The tip was not forwarded to Miami, and “no further investigation” was conducted into Cruz.
FBI Director Christopher Wray said he is “committed to getting to the bottom of what happened,” and that members of the bureau “deeply regret the additional pain this causes all those affected by this horrific tragedy.”
The Governor of Florida demanded that the FBI tell the public where this tip went wrong, who was responsible, why they didn’t follow protocols and what’s being done about it. But, so far the FBI is stonewalling his request, just as they did during the aftermath of 9-11 when a tipster provided information that potentially would have exposed the entire plot.
The FBI works for us, not the other way around. They should not have a choice about full disclosure in this case. When they screw up and the public demands answers – we have a right to know! Three of the recent shooters were known crazies, on they were on FBI watch list! What good does that list do if they FBI doesn’t investigate? This glaring breakdown needs fixing now. However, lawmakers are not focusing their leverage on the FBI, they are seeking tougher gun control laws. Which brings up, what exactly do they have in mind? I would like to know. The people deserve to know about any proposed encroachments on our 2nd amendment right.
