Broward Deputy Failed to Do His Duty

by Jack

“The Broward sheriff deputy assigned to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School resigned on Thursday, about a week after a school shooting there that left 17 people dead.
Scot Peterson, a school resource officer from the Broward County Sheriff’s office, waited outside the school building without ever going inside, sheriff Scott Israel said during a news conference on Thursday.

“What I saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of building 12, take up a position, and he never went in,” Israel said Thursday, referring to the school building where the shooter went on his rampage.

He added the deputy “clearly” knew a shooter was inside the building, but stayed outside for four minutes while the killing continued.

“Devastated, sick to my stomach. There are no words,” Israel said describing his feelings. “These families lost their children, we lost coaches. I’ve been to the funerals. I’ve been to the homes where they’re sitting shivering. I’ve been to the vigils. There are no words.” end of article

I know from personal experience police are trained to run towards the shooting and engage without delay, because every second could mean a life. This has been the national policy since Columbine.

Generally police do acts of heroism daily and they do it perfectly and without much notice. But, this one Broward County deputy sheriff failed to respond and now he has resigned. The whole nation knows that he was in the right place, at the right time in anticipation of just such an event. He was armed and trained and he failed to do his duty. It is inexplicable. I think this disgraced man should be under suicide watch.

What have we learned from this tragedy so far? Well, not sure about you, but so far I’ve learned that you can pass all the laws you want and it’s no guarantee of safety. I’ve learned that immediately following a tragedy like this one, the emotions run so high that logic is often shoved aside, especially in public forums and for political advantage. I’ve learned that leftist democrats will always try to leverage off the misery of others following a crisis and do it for their own low, self-serving, purposes. And I’ve learned that “gun free” zones are a foolish concept and they only serve to invite trouble. I’ve also learned that the existing laws and tips provided by numerous persons, tips warning law enforcement about the dangers of this particular shooter, and over the course of several years were not heeded. I learned that both the FBI and local law enforcement were remiss in doing all that they could and should have done. I’ve learned that a crazy man, who never should have been allowed to purchase a firearm, did so many times. I learned that the laws and the system failed us and people died.

We’ve all learned our gov’t at every level has failed us, from the resource officer there that awful day, the local law enforcement who went to his house 39 times, the school administration and board, and the FBI.

Those wanting to give our failed gov’t more control are nuts!

Lessons well learned Jack, thanks for the addition of common sense.

Regarding the local officers, Sundance at Conservative Treehouse has interesting information to share in his piece titled, “Broward County Sheriff’s Office Did Not ‘Miss Warning Signs’ or Make ‘Mistakes’…”

… The Sheriff’s office did exactly what their internal policies, procedures and official training required them to do, they intentionally ignored the signs, and intentionally didn’t generate documents. … Broward County law enforcement (Sheriff Israel), in conjunction with Broward County School Officials (Superintendent Runcie and School Board), have a standing policy to ignore any criminal engagement with High School students.

When the police are hiding current, actual and ongoing unlawful conduct as a matter of standard procedure on a regular basis, what do we expect the police would do with reports of potential unlawful conduct? Of course they would ignore them. …

… As a standard Broward and Miami-Dade practice, when school law enforcement need to cover-up or hide behavior, they need time (when that behavior happens) to delete the evidence trail. As such the school policy -as carried out in practice- is more efficient with a 30 minute tape delay affording the school officer enough time to deal with the situation, then erase the possibility of a recording of the unlawful activity surfacing.

Building in a 30 minute delay on the CCTV system was one of those pesky add-on items that happened a few years ago when the School and Law Enforcement officials established the policy of intentionally not arresting students. …

… when the county education policy is intentionally constructed to ignore criminal behavior in schools, the Sheriff and School superintendent cannot rely on “law-and-order-minded” school police officers to carry out the heavily nuanced policy. The county officials need the people closest to the work, the officers, to be able to think quickly on their feet to safeguard their prized district-wide statistics.

2013 – Broward announced broad changes designed to mitigate the use of harsh punishments for minor misbehavior at the beginning of this school year. While other districts have amended their discipline codes, prohibited arrests in some circumstances, and developed alternatives to suspension, Broward was able to do all these things at once with the cooperation of a group that included a member of the local NAACP, a school board member, a public defender, a local sheriff, a state prosecutor, and several others. In early November, The Miami Herald reported that suspensions were already down 40 percent and arrests were down 66 percent. (2013 article link)

A Broward County SRO must carry a political hat and be able to intercept behavior, modify his/her action based on a specific policy need, falsify documents, hide evidence, manipulate records and engage inside the system with an understanding of the unwritten goals.

Broward County school law enforcement are given political instructions, and carrying out political objectives. They are not given law-enforcement instructions.

The school officers are the primary foot soldiers carrying out county political policy. Physical security of school students is not their role, they don’t have time for that. The Broward County SRO is in place to protect the school system “policy” and ensure students are not arrested for criminal conduct. … (continues)

“If you see something, say something” doesn’t work if nobody – in this case the FBI and the Broward County Sheriff – doesn’t want to listen.

I just learned about the policy of turning a blind eye to criminal conduct by students, so the stats will look better. What an outrage.
