CA AB109 Has Many Unintended Consequences – Such as Prisoners Voting

Posted by Jack

In 2011, California voters passes Assembly Bill 109 (AB 109), known as “realignment.” The effect of this bill was to divert people convicted of certain classes of felonies from the Department of Corrections (state prison) to local county jails.

AB 109 remains the subject of significant controversy, a controversy intensified by the February 20, 2017 shooting death of Whittier Police officer Keith Boyer. As a consequence of realignment, the suspect in that case was on locally supervised probation rather than the more stringent jurisdiction of the Department of Corrections.

In addition prisoners will be afforded the right to vote from county jail, with certain guidelines.

You CAN vote while in county jail if you are:

  • 18 years of age or older, and
  • a citizen of the United States, and
  • awaiting trial or on trial for any crime, or
  • in jail for a misdemeanor conviction, or
  • in jail on a probation violation, or
  • in jail on felony probation, or
  • serving a county jail sentence under Realignment (AB 109).

Tens of thousands of convicted criminals and persons accused of serious crimes awaiting trial, sitting in county jail will be voting soon.   Being a good citizen once meant having a  right to vote, but the liberals in CA have lowered the bar again.  It’s so low now, you would have to dig a hole to get under it.  They want illegals to have the vote too….chances are it will happen.
