New Study, Veggie Diet Worse Than Meat for Environment – Educators Wise Up

roast-beastPosted by Tina

A new study from Carnegie Mellon indicates that vegetables, fruits, dairy and seafood may have a more negative effect on the environment than meat:

The meat-less diet increases energy use by 38 percent, water use by 10 percent and greenhouse gas emissions by six percent.

“Eating lettuce is over three times worse in greenhouse gas emissions than eating bacon,” Paul Fischbeck, professor of social and decisions sciences and engineering and public policy, told Carnegie Mellon. “Lots of common vegetables require more resources per calorie than you would think. Eggplant, celery and cucumbers look particularly bad when compared to pork or chicken.”

Oh dear, if this is true, green vegetarians are going to be in a perpetual state of anxiety and conflict.

But that’s not the only fun/good news for climate deniers and the next generation. According to a study by the National Center for Science Education, forty percent of educators are now teaching their students that human caused climate change is controversial. The article’s author, Jonathan Zimmerman, is upset about it; he’s one of the “97% of scientists” believers who complains that deniers lie and distort the truth. He only wants our kids to hear from the myth makers, the group that touts “97% of scientists,” a political story which derives from:

…a handful of surveys and abstract-counting exercises that have been contradicted by more reliable research.

See also here, here, and here.

Ya gotta laugh at the insanity…“oh no, deniers are causing kids to hear what top scientists think who don’t agree with the opinions of the so-called 97% of scientists. YIKES!”

What harm can a little knowledge do?

Never fear, boys and girls, we can eat meat without fear! We can send kids to school knowing they will actually learn about various scientific ideas on the subject of climate change. We can rejoice that the truth will continue to be pursued. So let’s all just relax and, please, pass the roast beast!

Ho! Ho! Ho!

    Tina,
Clearly, this kind of information could be offensive to the Enviro/Green religion and it’s blindly faithful followers, and is going to have to be banned on campuses like Yale.

  2. Libby says:

No they don’t wise up. They delude you, which is much too easy to do.

Which uses less resources: quinoa from the field to your gut, or corn that goes from the field to the cow to your gut?

You just don’t give, even rudimentary, thought to anything.

    • Tina says:

Well Dearie, since a lot of cows are mostly grass fed your scenario doesn’t quite hold up.

But you need to take your assumptions up with Paul Fischbeck, professor of social and decisions sciences and engineering and public policy who did the study. I’m sure he would have a few facts that would likely escape you since you’re only interested in information that supports you’re highly invested position.

Please explain how consensus is anything but a delusion which you, with your rudimentary abilities have bought hook line and sinker.

Geez, just the alarmist predictions since the seventies from the warming clowns, which have NOT come to pass, should raise big red flags. Rudimentary? You haven’t reached even that level!

  3. Soaps says:

Of course a veggie diet is worse for the environment. Vegetarians live longer than carnivores, so the longer you are here, the more stress on the planet. If we all ate lots of bacon and hamburger, we would die sooner. The fewer people, the better off the environment. Simple logic.

  4. Tina says:

Can’t wait to see if your logical explanation will be too “rudimentary” for Libs.

A study that supports the vegan is better position is interesting but doesn’t convince me. Too many variables are involved, genes being one of them. I would bet genetics has more to do with health and length of life.

  5. Libby says:

Tina, look at you: touting elitist credentials over common sense.

As I said, you don’t think for yourself.

  6. Libby says:

Soaps, do you know what you just said? Progressives will out … if you all don’t kill the planet first.

  7. Pie Guevara says:

So, let me get this straight. According to Libby any study that claims eating meat enhances Anthropogenic Global Warming is accurate, and any study that says eating just vegetables instead of meat enhances Anthropogenic Global Warming is a fraud intended to delude Tina.

    OK, got it.

I actually believe Anthropogenic Global Warming is caused by humans. Is is humans who made it up and perpetuate this pseudo-science fraud. There are 100 factors (at least) that affect the climate, the notion tweaking one (anthropogenic carbon dioxide) will have a controlling effect is ludicrous snake oil. This notion is perpetuated by people trying to save their jobs and their research funding, and greenies seeking political clout to promote their half-baked aggendas.

  8. Pie Guevara says:

Hmmm, the comments section is now posting in italics. I wonder if the code will stop it …

    Test end italics.

  9. Pie Guevara says:

    Nope, how about this …

    Test end italics.

  10. Pie Guevara says:

Oh well, that was fun anyway.

  11. Pie Guevara says:

    Hmmm…what does this do?

    Eh?

    • Tina says:

Thanks Pie…I finally got to posting comments and found your experiments quite entertaining.

It’s fixed now in the article where I had failed to close the italics following the word “Yikes!”

  12. Dewey says:

How about we make noise about the USA being threatened with 1 Billion dollars of sanctions by Mexico and China? Why? Because we have USDA and country of origin labels on our meats.

Sovereignty? The WTO tells us what to do now?

Better help fight these trade deals – we lost that one under NAFTA. I rather eat USA meat than Chinese meat.

    • Tina says:

And you are free to eat American beef, so?

Trade with China hurts in some areas and helps in others. The trick is to make enough deals with enough countries so that all of our industries benefit.

This article is from 2011. The Chinese economy has been slowing considerably since then so the numbers may not be accurate for today. They do show the benefits to American workers and consumers that trade with other countries help to provide:

U.S. exports to China topped $100 billion for the first time in 2011, the latest in a series of rapid expansions, according to a new report from the US-China Business Council.

That means China — the world’s second largest economy — trails only Canada and Mexico as a buyer of American goods. Exports hit $103.9 billion in 2011, an increase of $12 billion over the previous year.

What did China buy? “$14.7 billion in U.S. crops in 2011, plus $13.7 billion of computers and electronics, $13.6 billion of chemicals and $13.2 billion worth of transportation equipment. China also purchased a rather large amount of waste and scrap — $11.5 billion worth.”

Sanctions cut both ways. We need a very good negotiator, as Trump would say.

American consumers, especially the poor, benefit from trade with China. Affordable clothing and other goods provide them with products at a cheaper price.

Here’s one article on the Mexico/Canada/WTO sanctions flap, in case you guys want to know what the heck Dewey is babbling on about tonight.

We cannot fix every problem. We can’t even hope to stay on top of all of them.

What we could do, if we’d wise up, is preserve the last best hope for mankind… America!

America is unique in all the world. Recognizing both the flaws of human beings and the oppressive nature of tyrannical governments our founders wisely devised a republican form of government with power vested in the people, the individual, as spelled out in the Constitution and supported by the rule of law. We have been given the privilege and the responsibility of living in freedom. How precious is that freedom? so precious hat people litterally risk their lives to come here.

But our freedom is swiftly being undermined by misguided ignorance, by those who seek power and control over the individual in the name of emotionally promoted causes. those who seek to undermine our freedoms and our republican government find their home and their seat of power in the Democrat Party. Democrat candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie sanders present themselves as lovers of Democracy. But in every proposal they make you will find another seed of oppression. A means to expanding the power of the few at the top and diminishing the power of the individual to direct the course of his own life.

      Think about it…please.

I know you’re stuck in revolutionary thinking but you really should expand your education a bit…others have and found freedom.

      • Pie Guevara says:

Re Tina : “Sanctions cut both ways.”

And kowtowing to Mexico or Canada is not a solution. COOL should not be repealed and to call it “blatantly protectionist” is ridiculous.

Of course COOL will be repealed if Democrats demand it be. Republicans will appease them.

Canada and Mexico have been granted $1 billion in sanctions by the WTO.

“R-CALF, a group of U.S. cattle producers, said the ‘absurd’ decision overstated the damage.”
$1 Billion In Sanctions Imposed 1

“Mexico’s economy ministry said it has started internal procedures to strip benefits from some imports of U.S. apples, dairy, alcoholic drinks and personal hygiene products.

“The previous Conservative government in Canada had drafted a lengthy list of possible targets, ranging from beef and pork to wines and cherries.”
$1 Billion In Sanctions Imposed 2

    • Pie Guevara says:

How about YOU make a noise on your own blog?

      • Dewey says:

How about you speak from knowledge… babbling? This all was the result of NAFTA signed into law by Clinton.

Bottom Line they are going to make it illegal to label the origin of Meat in the coming bill because a tribunal the WTO has enforced law over the country of the United States of America.

In other words a corporate court outside our country gets to decide what is legal in this country based on lost projected profits of other countries.

You are no longer allowed to know whether it is US Meat or Chinese meat. The USA is not in charge. #Sovereignty

The fact you had to dig for info tells me you have not a clue on these trade deals.

  13. Dewey says:

Sorry that is Canada not China late here.
