Recommendation: No on Prop 50

Harold writes: Please post this for Monday review by our readers, I think it is important that this poorly written Prop be sent back for a rewrite with a clear definition of use!

“Proposition 50.

Is it the right thing to pass? Do politicians, accused of terrible crimes, have the right to the presumption of innocence?
Yes and they should be held to a higher standard of activity.

HOWEVER, nothing in the proposition requires that suspension of pay (which is only for the period of suspension), ONLY be used in criminal cases and that raises the possibility that suspension without pay could be used as a weapon of political retribution.

Which given the bias of politics in California’s legislature these days is highly likely.

There is no good news with Prop 50, because if legislators start getting arrested on corruption charges at a pace like in 2014 then we have bigger problems with our political system than Prop 50 can fix.” That’s why it will not get my support as written.
