Donald Trump Fought for Minorities in Florida 1997

Moving on….

The American Spectator posted an interesting article, “When Trump Fought the Racists,” by Jeffery Lord. Lord recalls a Wall Street Journal piece from 1997 that featured Trumps purchase of a piece of property in Key Largo, Florida, “…the famous Mar-a-Largo estate, built in the 1920s by Post Cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post. Trump turned the property into a club and through the process upset the apple carts of other local clubs:

The WSJ story that is linked focuses on the battles Trump faced as a new arrival to Palm Beach, including his new competition with the social clubs of the old order. The story, which quotes Abe Foxman, the longtime head of the Anti-Defamation League, says, in part, the following:

Mr. Trump also has resorted to the courts to secure his foothold here, and many residents wince at the attention his legal battles with the town have drawn — to the town in general, and to the admission practices at some of Palm Beach’s older clubs in particular.

…The culture clash began to approach a climax last fall, when Mr. Trump’s lawyer sent members of the town council a copy of the film “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” a film that deals with upper-class racism. Mr. Trump then approached the town council about lifting the restrictions that had been placed on the club. He also asked some council members not to vote on the request because their membership in other clubs created a conflict of interest.

Last December, after the council refused to lift the restrictions, Mr. Trump filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Palm Beach, alleging that the town was discriminating against Mar-a-Lago, in part because it is open to Jews and African-Americans. The suit seeks $100 million in damages.

… Mr. Foxman seems pleased that Mr. Trump has elevated the issue of discriminatory policies at social clubs. “He put the light on Palm Beach,” Mr. Foxman says. “Not on the beauty and the glitter, but on its seamier side of discrimination. It has an impact.”

In recent weeks, Mr. Foxman says, the league has received calls from Jewish residents telling of how Palm Beach clubs are changing. Locals concur that in the past year, organizations such as the Bath and Tennis Club have begun to admit Jewish patrons. The Palm Beach Civic Association, which for many years was believed to engage in discriminatory behavior, this month named a Jewish resident as its chief officer.

In other words? In other words, long before he was running for president, there was Donald Trump battling racism and anti-Semitism in Palm Beach society. Using every tool at his disposal.

This is hard evidence that Donald Trump is NOT a racist. It exists outside of the political atmosphere of the presidential election. His actions then stand in stark contrast to the howling voices that accuse him of racism today.

Let the younger generations take a lesson. Racism is serious and we cheapen the charge when loose talk is made equal with lynching or inequality of basic services: separate water fountains and bathrooms or sitting at the back on buses and in theaters.

“This is hard evidence that Donald Trump is NOT a racist.”

Uh, no. This is hard evidence that he will deal the race card in a lawsuit filed to advance his interests, no one else’s.

  2. Tina says:

Libby you show yourself to be incredibly partisan, judgmental, petty and typical of the left which never gives an inch. It would kill you to admit the man has a heart, that he actually believed the practice of quietly denying entry to minorities was evil.

In terms of his business interest how would going against the local community and the wealthy people that were powerful in the community (He also asked some council members not to vote on the request because their membership in other clubs created a conflict of interest.) be advantageous to him?

Why are his action not worthy of praise and admiration?

  3. Libby says:

No, I show myself attentive to fact, not innuendo. Any incidental positive effect of the suit does not enhance or embellish or redeem the purpose of the suit which was to advance Trump’s interest in some zoning/licensing squabble with local authorities.

And … you had to go all the way back to 1997??

    Hello!

OMG Bottom Line…Trump has collected the KKK and white supremacists as his # 1 base. That is a fact and here in the south they feel they are going to rise again!… Of Course it is all a facade for the people. Trump was brought up by a racist father and at a younger age tried to redline.

So this is futile. He has chosen to collect the racist base. He has spewed racist comments in code. Running as a candidate for POTUS

Newsflash HRC is not so human herself and I am beginning to see she may be a quiet racist.

They both tolerate Blacks. Those who they work with.

But in the end Both of them have bigger dirt than this.

While Trump is small beans in Political corruption he has Business corruption.

Hillary is huge in political corruption.

They are both corrupt and bad for the country.

Americans are weak. Allow the establishment and media to give you a choice like sheeple?

Then glorify guns because the need to feel power? Peaceful actions can help. DO something!

Look the amount of foreign corruption, money and treasonous acts by those we elect ….it is going to bring us world and civil war in the next decade.

The Bush Family is corrupt, Halliburton Cheney, pappy Bush and the Carlyle group/NSA ect ect Pappy is a CIA Op! Never forget that!

    Again….

    The Clinton’s are corrupt

    Trump is corrupt

But it is the list of participants who are not in the media eye who we should fear…………………

that is why there was no indictment of HRC or push against the others…

I smell trouble, we have a chance to open the wounds start with HRC since she is today’s relevance… The Clinton Foundation and all the foreign donations and Business deals with US companies……. Selling arms, Arming both sides of the rebel wars Middle east ect ect

I can feel it, smell it, and this cover up is BIG involves many many High Level Politicians and Donors… EVen Trump donated to the Clinton Foundation……for Building Permits albeit I bet he covered that trail pretty good he is no fool

House of cards that would rock the people, Destroy the USA,

They are all corrupt beyond our wildest dreams

    We are the serfs

    Research the Clinton Foundation

mark my words they did not indict on these low level crimes cause the truth may fall through a crack……
