New York: A deep blue wave just hit the moderates of the Democrat Party as voters chose an avowed socialist to replace the incumbent:
(CNN)Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina running her first campaign, ousted 10-term incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley in New York’s 14th congressional district on Tuesday, CNN projects, in the most shocking upset of a rollicking political season.
An activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Ocasio-Cortez won over voters in the minority-majority district with a ruthlessly efficient grassroots bid, even as Crowley — the fourth-ranking Democrat in the House — outraised her by a 10-to-1 margin.
This was the first time in 14 years a member of his own party has attempted to unseat Crowley, who chairs the Queens County Democrats. His defeat marks a potential sea change in the broader sphere of liberal politics…Ocasio-Cortez ran defiantly to his left — with universal health care, a federal jobs guarantee and the abolition of ICE headlining her demands — Crowley touted a formidable liberal record of his own. He was the first member of the House Democratic leadership to sign on in support of “Medicare for all” and has been a vocal advocate for immigrants’ rights. But he also stumbled, repeatedly, on the campaign trail, the likely residue of passing so many years without a primary test.
Ocasio-Cortez is a twenty-eight year old newcomer to politics who won with a 57.5% of the vote. Her former job was bartender, where she worked to help support her “working-class” family. Her next challenge will be to defeat the Republican in November, Anthony Pappas, in a district that has been solidly Democrat for “the past nine elections.” Looks good for the Socialist.
Her bona fides derive from her organizational experience in the Bernie Sanders campaign. She studied economics in college but since she backed Bernie her education was definitely shaped by leftist thought.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is definitely wet behind the ears. If she makes it to Congress she’ll have a lot to learn. But I predict Old Nancy will see to it that she’s walking in lock-step before you can say Maleficent.

Could also be that voter’s choice was the lesser of 2 evils for Demwits . . . . If you can’t figure out whom to vote FOE, at least decide whom to vote AGAINST.
Remains to be seen if she’ll prevail in November.
The turnout resulting in her election was really low, apparently. Her chances of beating out the incumbent Republican may not be all that great as long as republicans don’t stay home.
It’s an interesting year. Usually the opposition party wins big…may not happen this year.
