Death of American Newspapers – An Unsustainable Model

by Jack

Prior to the Internet, newspapers made 90% of their money from classified advertising. If you wanted a job, car or house then you had to buy a newspaper because nowhere else advertised such things.  Now places like Facebook, Google, etc., are raking in more dough than the newspapers ever dreamed of, because those businesses reach a greater audience at a fraction of the price.

The drying up of advertising money has turned responsible investigative journalism into something closer to the realm of the tabloids trying to sell papers with sensationalism.  Those old reporters (with integrity) are being replaced by a new breed that are only interested in a headline.  They were  leftwing activist in college and now they are  posing as reporters.

But, these liberals made a big mistake, mainstream America is not left of center!  Our silent majority doesn’t think much of fake news and leftwing propaganda.  In fact, it’s a major turn off to see newspapers pushing their political agenda.   Mainstream America does not love sanctuary cities, open borders, runaway deficits or wasteful spending on illegal aliens unlike the news breed of reporters.

The damage done by these liberals to the nations newspapers is now irreversible.   The American people are fed up with their CNN style journalism (fake news wrapped in political bias.)

This is in large part why Americans are cancelling subscription in favor of something better that is easily found on the radio, smart phones or the internet.

It’s estimated that this declining trend has cost our newspapers about 2 trillion dollars over the last decade.  Ouch!

It seems a shame that our formerly respected newspapers should now fall so far from grace.  But, as Wm. Randolph Hearst might say, they were hoist by their own petard. (I love that line)  Yep, they’re all going broke as they languish in the gutter of liberalism awaiting for their final paycheck.   (Playing taps on my bugle now)

An aside–After a number of print cycles, the linotype alloy is considered scrap and replaced with fresh stock. Scrap linotype alloyed with scrap lead wheel weights (long since banned in Kalifornia) is perfect for casting your own bullets.

“mainstream America is not left of center”

Which party won the popular vote in six out of the past seven presidential elections?

    • Post Scripts says:

Answer to Chris, the democrats won the last 6/7 pres elections in the popular vote. But, that does not mean there are more people left of center. According to this poll conservatives still lead liberals by 9%. https://news.gallup.com/poll/201152/conservative-liberal-gap-continues-narrow-tuesday.aspx The conclusion from the Gallop poll is mainstream America is not left of center.

      • Chris says:

Labels are a funny thing. There are plenty of polls that show the majority of Americans tend to favor more progressive solutions and policies. The term “liberal” has been so successfully demonized that I’d wager a lot of people who favor liberal policies still self-identify as conservative. The ultimate poll is the presidential election, and on that front we have you beat.

More lying liberal media to afraid to just tell the truth.

TIME MAGAZINE COLUMNIST’S TRUMP QUOTE WENT VIRAL — THEN HE ADMITTED HE MADE IT UP:

“Time Magazine columnist Ian Bremmer on Sunday tweeted a quote from President Donald Trump about North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un that quickly went viral — but it wasn’t real.

“President Trump in Tokyo: ‘Kim Jong Un is smarter and would make a better President than Sleepy Joe Biden.’” Bremmer wrote on Twitter.

While Trump did praise the North Korean dictator’s insult of former Vice President Joe Biden, the president never said what Bremmer quoted him saying — because Bremmer made it up. (RELATED: 9 Times The Media Pushed Misinformation About Brett Kavanaugh)

Bremmer left the false post up for several hours before conceding he made up the quote and deleting the tweet, which he defended as “plausible.”

    • Chris says:

As I said on Twitter, I immediately read that quote as satire. But it was so close to what Trump actually said that I can see why many believed it and then took it as actual fake news. Goes to show that satirizing this president is hard if not impossible. If you’re outraged at this fake quote, you should be just as outraged at the real one, in which Trump spent Memorial Day weekend siding with an evil foreign dictator over a fellow American. If the quote had been real, you would have defended or ignored it, like you defend or ignore every other genuine thing the president says. Bremmer’s “experiment” was irresponsible and foolish, and wasn’t necessary to point out the president’s irresponsible language or his party’s enabling of same.

I remember some here used to claim that Obama hated Republicans more than he hated foreign terrorists. Was that projection? Because Obama never would have said this about a political rival:

I know Chris, that is very juvenile and un-presidential to say that garbage. I hate that part about Trump and I wish he would knock it off.

        • Chris says:

          I appreciate the honesty, Jack.

        • Peggy says:

Jack, Trump didn’t say, ‘Kim Jong Un is smarter and would make a better President than Sleepy Joe Biden.’ Some stupid liberal reporter made it up. He later deleted and apologized.

          • Post Scripts says:

Hi Peggy, I didn’t know Trump was accused of saying that? Well, that’s a shame and I’m glad the reporter retracted it. However, my gripe with Trump is not with any one remark or tweet. Its the sum of them – way too many. This is troubling because it’s hurting him and in turn it hurts his legislative agenda. Trump may be a generous and compassionate guy, but too many embarrassing personal attacks on his foes has damaged the dignity of his office. From day one of his presidency I’ve had a problem with that and I still do. My greatest regret here is knowing that Trump could be so much more effective, if he just knew when to zip it.

          • Chris says:

Peggy, I assumed Jack was responding to what Trump actually said about Joe Biden, which was just as bad as the fake quote.

          • Peggy says:

Jack, I too cringe at some of his remarks and agree he shoots himself in the foot sometimes. I just watched his commencement speech where he again stepped on his own words.

My willingness to overlook some of his gafes probably comes from my working with so many students who had limited grasp of speaking. I had to learn to listen to what they were trying to say and not concentrate on every single word. I also worked with a PHd who couldn’t spell his way out of a paper bag, but could write computer programs like a genius. Too many imperfect men and women have given of themselves to make our country and world better for me to write of someone because I don’t like how they speak.

Trump is far from perfect, but thank God Hillary didn’t win. His willingness to take the daily and never ending attacks so no future president ever has to go through another attempted coup earns my highest admiration. A lesser man or woman would have given up long ago. Reminder Churchill was also hated for his brashness, crude manner of speech, forced out of parliament and later begged to return during WWll to save England.

With the recent disclosure of Obama administration’s abuse of our intelligence agencies going back now to 2012 and encompassing thousands of Americans meant we were just one election away from the end of our Republic. Trump is our Churchill IMHO.

The Obama Use of FISA-702 as a Domestic Political Surveillance Program….
Posted on April 23, 2019 by sundance

“Now that we have significant research files on the 2015 and 2016 political surveillance program; which includes the trail evident within the Weissmann/Mueller report; in combination with the Obama-era DOJ “secret research project” (their words, not mine); we are able to overlay the entire objective and gain a full understanding of how political surveillance was conducted over a period of approximately four to six years.

Working with a timeline, but also referencing origination material in 2015/2016 – CTH hopes to show how the program operated. This explains an evolution from The IRS Files in 2010 to the FISA Files in 2016.”

Trump is a native English speaker.

I also worked with a PHd who couldn’t spell his way out of a paper bag, but could write computer programs like a genius.

But Trump isn’t a genius. He is objectively stupid, in ways that go far beyond his speaking style. Your excuses for him are nonsense.

        • Peggy says:

More fake news to make Trump look bad.

Trump denies asking military to move USS John S. McCain ‘out of sight’:

“Meghan McCain, the late senator’s daughter, calls the president “a child,” saying her grief is “unbearable.”

The Defense Department also disputed parts of the Journal account.

“The name of USS John S. McCain was not obscured during the POTUS visit to Yokosuka on Memorial Day,” said Rear Adm. Charlie Brown, the Navy’s chief of information, using a common acronym for “president of the United States.”

“The Navy is proud of that ship, its crew, its namesake and its heritage,” he said.

          https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/trump-denies-asking-military-move-uss-john-s-mccain-out-n1011746

          • Chris says:

A denial does not prove that it was “fake news.” And Trump seemed to confirm that someone covered it up today:

“I was not a big fan of John McCain in any way, shape or form. He killed healthcare. I was never a fan, but I would never do anything like that. But someone did that, and they were well-meaning. But I would never do anything like that.”

Notice how he still needs to get a little dig in at a dead patriot whose service he disparaged constantly, even including a lie (McCain did not “kill healthcare,” he voted against a repeal of existing healthcare legislation because it was poorly thought out and would have been disastrous to the healthcare system).

The media doesn’t need to make Trump look bad. He does that all by himself.

The Navy has confirmed the WSJ’s original story.

Re: “The ultimate poll is the presidential election, and on that front we have you beat.”

Sometimes you just have to laugh. The demagoguery and denial is so thick you can cut it with a knife. The fat rats on both the left and right coasts think they should run the whole country and everyone else be damned. Not gonna happen.

  6. Chris says:

You live closer to the actual coast than I do. And I don’t think the coasts should “run the country,” I think the presidential election should be decided by the majority of Americans. That’s not a super controversial opinion. The fairness of the electoral college is a valid debate, not something you can just laugh off. But then that is all you know how to do these days, which is why you provided nothing to counter the facts I brought up, which is that if you judge by six out of the past seven popular votes as well as a number of polls, the majority of Americans do seem to be left-of-center. But keep laughing. Your feelings are definitely more important than facts.
