Is Someone In Your Family Thinking About Joining the Military?

by Jack Lee

aServices.jpg

Serving in the United States military is a privilaged obligation. Now let me explain that. It is a privilage because not everyone can be in the military nor should they be. It is an obligation because every citizen ought to serve their country in some form at some time in their life and a military obligation is the highest form of service.

For as long as we have been a nation, with our unique idealism and freedom somebody in uniform has had to defend it. Why should your son or daughter be any different than our sons and daughters? If they are merely thinking of joining that shows character and I would hope that caring parents would give them the encouragement to follow through on their desires. This is a tough thing to do because the world is a dangerous place and being in the military comes with a certain risk. But, life would a lot more risky without a strong military. Somebody has to do it.

Whether their enlistment lasts two years or twenty, what matters is they took that initial step forward to do their duty. And in exchange for that service their country will reward them with a first class education in what it means to be an American citizen. When they get out they’ll qualify for more rewards, like the G.I. bill for a home loan or education. But, this is not about benefits, its about patriotism.

A lot of people who have never served have this twisted idea that being in the military is like Hollywoods version of “Full Metal Jacket”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Yes, there is a certain amount of yelling and exhaustion that goes on in boot camp, but it’s all part of a program. Millions have gone through it and even boot camp just isn’t that bad today.

I’ve had a chance to observe our services evolve for many years and I’m convinced our military has never been better. Especially when you consider the educational opportunities…it really adds up fast to a good job. You can’t put a price on serving your country, but in terms of character building, military service pays dividends for a life time.

Check out the military pay table.

Interesting Times & The R Word

by Jack Lee

apictures.jpgIt’s been said we should all be lucky enough to live in interesting times….but, our times say you better be careful what you ask for! Boring sounds real good to me about now. We open the work week with the stock market down again. GM is burning through about $3.1 million an hour, or the price of a well-equipped Cadillac every minute. Ford and Chrysler are not far behind.

Something has to give,. . .

will it be the end of the Big Three? Will it be Chapt. 11 and restructuring or will it be a bailout? A lot of folks are expressing reservations about the bailout plan, but one thing is certain much depends on which path is taken…. in fact, 1.5 million jobs and the financial health of the nation depend on it!

Speaking of jobs. . .

did you hear Citigroup will cut up to 53,000 jobs from its Sept. 30 levels? Citi has lost more than 20 billion in the last year. Fidelity Investments announced they will eliminate 1,700 jobs in the next round of cuts which brings their layoffs to 3000. National Auto Radiator have reduced their unionized workforce to less than 1/5th the size from 20 years ago thanks to declining sales in American made cars and trucks. Tis the season…U.S. Steel is laying off 675 unionized workers, up to 250 local staff could lose their jobs as HP merges with IT services giant EDS, in this last case all is not lost because IBM is eyeing its opportunities to scoop up the staff.

The G-20 . . .

On the other side of the pond the much heralded G-20 summit on Saturday turned out to be mostly symbolic. What has been coined as the new “Countercyclical fiscal policy” revealed the details of an extensive work plan for regulators, but most of it was old policy and it’s likely this could have all been done without making a big show of it and raising expectations. Unfortunately, there’s no quick fix solution to be found, the key word here is cyclical and economies must go through cycles. When government steps in the cure is often worse than the disease.

As this recession deepens and spreads, employees everywhere, from Beijing to Boston, are bracing for a veritable explosion in layoffs that are soon to follow.

RED ALERT KPAY FANS

If youre an avid talk radio fan you need to read this article from our friends at American Thinker. Ive excerpted a portion but the article contains a number of useful links.

Obama Declares War on Conservative Talk Radio, by Jim Boulet, Jr.

* Obama is on record as saying he does not plan an exhumation of the now-dead “Fairness Doctrine”. Instead, Obama’s attack on free speech will be far less understood by the general public and accordingly, far more dangerous. *** The late community organizer Saul Alinsky taught his followers to strike hard from an unexpected direction, an approach known as Alinsky jujitsu. *** “Alinsky jujitsu” as applied to conservative talk radio means using vague rules already on the books to threaten any station which dares to air conservative programs with the loss of its valuable broadcast license. *** The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rule in question is called “localism.” Radio and television stations are required to serve the interests of their local community as a condition of keeping their broadcast licenses. *** Obama needs only three votes from the five-member FCC to define localism in such a way that no radio station would dare air any syndicated conservative programming. *** Localism is one of the rare issues on which Obama himself has been outspoken. On September 20, 2007, Obama submitted a pro-localism written statement to an FCC hearing held at the Chicago headquarters of Rev. Jesse Jackson Sr.’s Operation Push. *** Radio and television station owners need to become engaged in the localism issue and then take the time to educate their own Congressman and Senators about the dangers of the FCC’s proposals. *** If broadcasters get involved, it just may be possible to block implementation of any localism rules during the few months remaining of the Bush Administration. *** While President Obama will have the authority to name Commissioners as their terms end, these nominations must be confirmed by the Senate. *** A few pointed questions on localism to FCC nominees during their confirmation hearings would be useful. A filibuster of any and all pro-localism FCC nominees would be even better. *** Any Senator leading such a filibuster would earn the gratitude of millions of fans of talk radio as well as everyone who believes in free speech. *

Equality for All?

By Bruce Sessions

abruce.jpg

Man to Military Recruiter: How old does a person have to be to join?

Recruiter: At least eighteen.

Man: Good! I wanna join up. Im twenty one.

Recruiter: UhwellIm sorry, but you cant join.

Man: Why not. Im of age.

Recruiter: Welluh, for one thing youre only three and a half feet tall.

Man: Im a dwarf. What youd probably call a midget. I still wanna join.

Recruiter: but youre in a wheelchair!

Man: So?

Recruiter: Sorry. You cant join. We have rules, regulations, and laws.

Man: Those laws are discriminatory.

Recruiter: Maybe so, but laws are laws.

Man: Why are you so filled with hate?

Recruiter: I dont hate you, but you cant join any branch. The armys field packs are bigger than you. You cant join the navy because wheel chairs cant navigate the ladders aboard ships.

Man: Theres this thing called the Americans with Disability act. The ships will have to accommodate me.

Recruiter: Sorry pal. You cant join.

Man: But I was born this way. Youre discriminating against me. You let other people join, but you wont let me. Thats discrimination. The Constitution demands equality for all.

Recruiter: Well, Im sorry you feel that waybut we have laws.

Man: Your laws were made by a bunch of hate-mongers, bigots. The law is denying me of my basic civil rights. We must all have equal rights, and I demand my rights to join the military.

Recruiter: Sorry pal, cant let you do that.

Man: Okay, Ill get an attorney, and take this all the way to the California Supreme Court. They have four judges on that court which Im sure will determine your laws to be discriminatory and in violation of my basic civil rights. Look what they did for same-sex marriage.

FREEZING HEAT?

06103CS-U.jpegAnthony…you sly…observant fellow!

The world has never seen such freezing heat, by Christopher Booker – Telegraph (UK)

* A surreal scientific blunder last week raised a huge question mark about the temperature records that underpin the worldwide alarm over global warming. On Monday, Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), which is run by Al Gore’s chief scientific ally, Dr James Hansen, and is one of four bodies responsible for monitoring global temperatures, announced that last month was the hottest October on record. *** This was startling. Across the world there were reports of unseasonal snow and plummeting temperatures last month, from the American Great Plains to China, and from the Alps to New Zealand. China’s official news agency reported that Tibet had suffered its “worst snowstorm ever”. In the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration registered 63 local snowfall records and 115 lowest-ever temperatures for the month, and ranked it as only the 70th-warmest October in 114 years. So what explained the anomaly?

Fear, Oil and the Recession

By Bud Biddle, Chief of Police – CA, retired

Dan has suspicions about foreign involvement and/or intervention into our financial debacles, both here and abroad. And I agree…but not with a question; an answer.

The MAJOR economic issues are singular. Its oil prices////the oil prices spiking; gasoline following suit and a MAJOR climate of FEAR developing with numerous foreclosures on loans that should never have been made. The latter FEAR being mainly brought on by the USA AND Global Media, e.g; National fear has simply gutted our economy and our stock and real estate prices. It’s fallout has sent consumer spending downward into dismal, devalued loop worse than 9-11 created.
