Say Hello to My Little Friend, the New Retroactive Text Tax

by Jack

Hot off the wire… the new CA governor and his pals are preparing a new tax for 2019, a “text tax” on cell phones to be precise.

This tax is to be retroactive for 5 years and will fund cell phones for welfare recipients (including our newly arrived homeless and illegal immigrants).   Actually, we already do that, but that the program is too costly to sustain and besides, democrats want to broaden it…thus the “Text Tax”or the cell phone surcharge, as some call it.

But, Taxifornia is already the most taxed state in the union!  High taxes and overregulation have directly resulted in a record number of tax paying  employers and jobs fleeing the state.   Given this exodus, and the rising costs of state’s already lavish entitlements, shouldn’t the democrats be a little concerned about adding another tax and its impact to our economy?  (Pffft…I’m kidding of course)

The San Jose Mercury news reported today, “The California Public Utilities Commission has proposed a surcharge on text messaging to help cover its growing budget for programs that help make phone service accessible to the poor, with a vote scheduled for Jan. 10.”

However, the feds have dealt a little setback to this tax scam.   “On Wednesday, the Federal Communications Commission in a 3-1 decision declared that wireless Short Message Service (SMS) and Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) are “information services” similar to email under the Communications Act — and not a telecommunications service.” SJMN.

The tax and spend democrats admit the FCC decision will make the “Text Tax” more difficult to implement, but by no means impossible.  Remember… the feds told CA that sanctuary cities were illegal and unconstitutional and look where that got us.

Oooooh … you need to direct your attention closer to home, Dude. Because if it turns out to be true that some gun-toting fart-knocker started the Camp Fire … your favorite policy position (Guns for All!) is about to take one whopping PR hit.

    Bull.

And why are you getting your knickers in a twist over a proposal that’s unlikely to pass legal muster, anyway:

The CNN article you linked to begins, “California regulators want to tax text messages to increase funds for programs that bring connectivity to underserved residents.”

Regulators will impose the tax if they can overcome an FCC ruling texts are an “information service.”

IF it’s imposed, and if it’s then challenged in court, there’s no guarantee that a California court would strike it down, in fact, just the opposite will likely happen. A lengthy court battle will be expensive and take time…time when Californians will pay the tax. They may not care that it passes muster…they may just care about how much more of your money they can get, even if the scheme is short lived…it’s cash on hand in the moment.

This is like the behavior of a desperate man or woman who has badly mismanaged his finances and is now doing all kinds of crazy things to survive one more day.

    It’s known as Taxifornia for a reason . . . . . . .

If there are two things this state can never get enough of, it’s taxes and liberals.

  5. Joe says:

Well, you better get used to new taxes and increases on existing taxes pronto!

With this last election the Demorats have a super-majority in the legislature and believe you me they intend to use it! They are already talking about a lot of new spending that someone is going to have to pay for and that someone is you.

Also, Gabby Nuisance will make Brown look down right frugal. He made a lot of expensive campaign promises and most of the Demorats in the legislature will demand he spend even more.

Also, don’t forget that your city council and CARD want tax increases on the next ballot. They both have hired consultants on your dime to come up with a siren song for voters to make sure it passes.

It will cost even more to live in this monstrously expensive state. I absolutely guarantee it. I recommend you invest in a yellow vest.

But don’t worry, folks. Taxifornia will find something ELSE to tax!
