Taxes Left & Right

Taxes.jpgor as the song said, clowns to the left of me jokers to the righthere I am stuck in the middle again!

by Tina Grazier

In Sacramento today Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called for a temporary (1.5%) hike in sales tax saying that spending cuts alone would not stop the bleeding in a budget deficit that has grown to $11.2 billion. The state has seen a significant drop in revenues due to declines in the housing market (property taxes) and a sinking stock market (capital gains taxes). Personal budgets have been squeezed, people are tightening their belts and buying less so sales taxes have also decreased.

Will the sales tax plan work? Ahhh, that is the question! The answer falls on deaf ears but we keep trying

The Obama Watch Begins

by Jack Lee

As you know President elect Obama ran on many promises, and top among them was building bi-partisan support. Leery republicans had questioned Obama’s radical associations, but they were assured over and over that these were people who held no influence in his life. They were among thousands of other people that he only had the most distant contacts with, so not to worry! He was billed as a man of the people, out to build consensus..strong on bi-partisanship! Sounded good and you elected him.

Republicans are fond of saying, watch what they do, not what they say. So what did Obama do? Well, his first move was to appoint Rep. Rahm Emanuel to be his White House chief of staff. Emanuel is known by his colleagues as “Rahmbo” – a nickname reflecting his reputation as one of the most ferociously combative figures in Washington.

Stay tuned; I’m sure Obama’s actions will reveal his true agenda very soon, even to the most naive. The Obama Watch begins!

POLLSTERS GET EVALUATED – RESULTS SURPRISING

Posted by Jack Lee

A lot of people felt the election was manipulated or at the very least confused by contradicting poll reporting. McCain was closing the gap, McCain was falling behind and it was the same day? Give me a break! And this went on for almost 6 months. Well, in this day of technology you just had to know that someone would eventually evaluate the pollsters for accuracy and here is the list from Pollsters.com, the best to the worst in that order:

1T. Rasmussen (11/1-3)**
1T. Pew (10/29-11/1)**
3. YouGov/Polimetrix (10/18-11/1)
4. Harris Interactive (10/20-27)
5. GWU (Lake/Tarrance) (11/2-3)*

THE POLITICS OF PERSONAL DESTRUCTION

By Bruce Sessions

abruce.jpgIve never quite understood why political candidates have to resort to the politics of personal destruction in order to win an election. A candidate has to destroy the opponent by attacking character, morals, family lifeand on and on it goes. Im told Its the only way you can win.

Its sadbut its true! Unfortunately, the very nature of political campaigns keeps a lot of intelligent, and highly qualified people from throwing their hats into the political arena. Who in their right mind wants to run for an office knowing full well that an opponent will stop at nothing to destroy any and all other candidates vying for office?

Political campaigns can be likened to a food fight in a junior high school cafeteria. Why any intelligent person would want to dive into that garbage bin is beyond me.

On the plus side, though; I see where Chico has cleaned up its act. The race for city council this time, was the cleanest since I arrived here in 1985. It was a pleasure to watch when compared with the decade of the 90s. Thats when things got so bad, the citizens finally said Enough! An attack ad by a candidate could spell that candidates defeat.

All the candidates for Chico City Council, winners and losers, should feel proud. So, too.should the citizens of Chico.

CHICO CITY COUNCIL RACE – UPDATE

by Jack Lee

We’re still waiting for the last ballots to be counted and it won’t be done for another 28 days. Don’t ask me why, sure seems like we could get it done a lot faster, but this is the legal window they have to do it and it doesn’t appear it will happen any sooner. This is what I was told about 5 minutes ago from County Elections office.

At the current time our lone conservative in the race, Larry Wahl, is hanging on by a razor thin margin and only a few votes seperate him from the next runner up, Mark Sorensen.

ANN SCHWAB 14261 14.94%
ANDY HOLCOMBE 14235 14.92%
JIM WALKER 14047 14.72%
LARRY WAHL 13245 13.88%
MARK SORENSEN 12917 13.54%
JOE VALENTE 10862 11.38%
ALI SARSOUR 10056 10.54%
CYNTHIA VAN AUKEN 5592 5.86%
Write-in Votes 217 0.23%

ATTENTION ALL HANDS, NOW HEAR THIS…

by Jack Lee

bruce.JPGWe promised you a big surprise on Post Scripts and here it is! We have the very good fortune to talk Bruce Sessions (see photo) into posting his work on our blog.

Bruce has been most recently, and therefore probably best known, as the North State’s most popular radio talk show host, but did you know his roots are also in journalism?

Bruce didn’t want to make a big thing out of this, however, Tina and I are die-hard Bruce Session’s fan’s and it’s hard not too! His style is sometimes biting, sometimes humorous, but always informative and captivating. Let me sum it up like this, if you like conservative blog writers like J.D. Hayworth or Hugh Hewitt, you’re going to love Bruce! He’s a perfect fit on Post Script’s!

If you’re wondering about the “title”, I did it to honor Bruce, a shellback of the highest order, a retired Navy Chief Petty Officer! ( He really is a man of many talents) And I suppose if I could have a Boatswain’s Mate pipe him aboard I would have done that too! He’s certainly earned it.

On behalf of Tina, myself and all the Bruce Sessions fans out here, I would like to offer a big…welcome aboard Bruce!

WILL HISTORY REPEAT ITSELF?

by Bruce Session

abruce.jpgThe euphoria over the outcome of this election will slowly fade between now and january…but come inauguration day, it’ll swell up again. And rightly so, since history will be made with the swearing in of the first African-Arab-American-Socialist as President of the United States.

Democrats came very close to gaining a filibuster-proof Senate. Had they achieved that, it would’ve been the first time since the 95th Congress back in 1977. Democrats held 61 seats in the Senate, 292 in the House, and had President Jimmy Carter in the White House.

The Democrats controlled it all, and the country went to hell in a handbasket. Inflation became rampant, taxes were exorbitant and the unemployment rate went through the roof. The “misery” index was created. In the military, we had planes that couldn’t fly for lack of spare parts. We had ships that couldn’t get underway. The military had been neutered…..and Carter gave away the Panama Canal.

By 1980, the public was ready to run the dems outta’ town on a rail and they did, by voting Carter ouit of office, and elected Ronald Reagan as this country’s new president.

Today, it’s almost deja voux. Democrats control the House, the Senate and come January, the White House. It’ll be interesting to see how long it takes for the public to get angry as the recession deepens, the unemployment rate rises and new taxes are levied on citizens–thus sweeping aside all those campaign promises.

According to CBS News Online, Obama’s senior advisers have drawn up plans to lower expectations for his presidency amid concerns that many of his euphoric supporters are harboring unrealistic hops of what he can achieve. But who gave them those unrealistic hopes?

President Carter promised change, but over the term of his presidency, the voters discovered they didnt’ like the change they’d voted for. Voters corrected their mistake in 1980. Will we see history repeat itself? Things will get a lot worse in the coming years. Socialism will do that. Might the next four years give rise to another Ronald Reagan? We watch and wait.
