CA – Draconian Rent Control Bill Heads to Senate

by Jack

MORE GOVERNMENT – LESS FREEDOM

In a vote along party lines, the Ca Assembly passed a rent control bill much to the chagrin of property owners.

“The state Assembly finally passed SF-based Assembly member David Chiu’s AB 1482—which will bar landlords from increasing rents more than five percent per year plus inflation—by a margin of 48-26 on Wednesday.”

The bill doesn’t stop at rent control, it also makes it even more difficult to evict bad tenants.  Currently landlords can expect to spend about $5000 and it takes about 3 months to evict, if you are lucky.  When this bill goes into effect that will look like the good old days.  Aren’t you glad you are not a landlord in CA?

By the way, in San Francisco I’ve heard it takes so long and is so expensive that its better for the landlord to pay $10-15,000 to get a bad tenant just to move out.

Never forget the Muslims that were blinded by hate, ignorance and stupidity that caused this, there’s a million more still out here.   I hope we never again show the apathy and lack of foresight that aided our enemies in this attack.

CA Wants to BAN RAT POISON?

Posted by Jack

From Townhall comes this….

California’s decades-long affair with liberal politics has brought disease—literally. Rats are overrunning parts of the state. It’s only amplified by the rising homelessness crisis. For a region of the country that is smug, wealthy, and condescending to no end about how great they are—they do have a lot of bums in the street, fecal matter in the street, and hypodermic needles in the street. San Francisco is covered in crap. And the solution is quite simple: clean up the damn cities. But that would mean be mean to homeless people or something.

Well, they’re ground zero for the rat infestation, which has brought back diseases we haven’t seen on such a daily basis since medieval times. Typhus has broken out. Police stations in Los Angeles were forced to pay fines that soared into the thousands of dollars due to the unsanitary conditions.

City hall is running wild with rats. And now the state EPA office in Sacramento was forced to close its outdoor playground due to their rat problem; they were worried about kids getting sick. And what is the state proposing now? Oh, they want to ban rat poison (via WSJ):

RATS, RATS and MORE RATS

by Jack

For a number of years hoards of rats have been showing up wherever our so-called homeless leave behind their trash. No longer limited to places like Los Angeles or San Francisco, the rat problem has found it’s way to Sacramento and not a moment too soon!

The city of Sacramento has started exterminating rats that have infested a vacant lot in Sacramento’s River District where the city plans to build a new fire station.  However, the lot is occupied by many homeless encampments and they don’t want to move.  This presents a problem.  The lot is located on Ahern Street between North A and North B streets, causing city officials to worry the rats could also cause a health crisis, but only if you consider bubonic plague a health crisis.

City Councilman Jeff Harris, who represents the River District, alerted city officials to the problem in late August, after hearing about it from a man who lives at Quinn Cottages across the street, he said.

“I was pretty shocked when I went out there,” Harris said. “It’s well known that rats can bear a lot of diseases, so they are a potential health hazard. The fact that there are people living on the street means there are food items on the street and those are definitely attractive to rats.”

Now if they could only exterminate the rats that occupy our state capitol…. hehehe

CA Prop 57 Disaster

by Jack

ARRESTS ARE DOWN – CRIME IS UP

In this land of unicorns and liberals, Proposition 47 passed with wide approval!  This legislation reduced many felony crimes to a simple misdemeanor.  While this was billed as a way to reduce prison overcrowding, it also helped keep repeat offenders out of jail – people who should be in jail.  Of course property crimes have soared in the years since Prop 47 became law.  Liberals never saw that one coming!

The report by the Public Policy Institute of California, released Monday, found that AB109, more commonly known as realignment, and Proposition 47, which reduced many property theft and drug crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, have combined to lower the overall arrest rate by nearly 20%!   But 20% here does not equal 20% less crime.  If wish it would, but no, it doesn’t work that way.   We got more crime – a lot more!  Consider that the average inmate in prison committed over 200 crimes, mostly felonies, before being sent to prison for the first time.  Now you do the math, what do you think 20% fewer arrests will do for us?  Yeah, a lot more crime is right.

Liberals think of Prop 47 as giving people a second chance to rethink their predatory ways, but in reality they’ve had many chances not to do crime and they flunked 200 times.   However, the worst part of Prop 47 is yet to be felt, this would be the migration effect.  The attraction of criminals to CA from other states.   Criminals are not stupid (like our legislature), they know their odds of being caught here are now much lower and their odds of going to jail lower still – so why not move to CA?

Hint:  If you are moving to CA, it’s best to move a sanctuary city.  You’ll soon get acclimated to all the rats and poop on the sidewalks.

CA Liberals are Killing Business Again

by Jack

MORE GOVERNMENT, LESS FREEDOM . . .

The classification of “independent contractor” is about to be changed to the status of a  regular employee.  That means they will be entitled to full benefits, salary and workers comp.  This will be the tipping point for  many employers that are currently just barely hanging on.  AB-5 is coming, get ready CA.

Assembly bill AB-5 reads in part, “It is also the intent of the Legislature in enacting this act to ensure workers who are currently exploited by being misclassified as independent contractors instead of recognized as employees have the basic rights and protections they deserve under the law, including a minimum wage, workers’ compensation if they are injured on the job, unemployment insurance, paid sick leave, and paid family leave. By codifying the California Supreme Court’s landmark, unanimous Dynamex decision, this act restores these important protections to potentially several million workers who have been denied these basic workplace rights that all employees are entitled to under the law.”

Sending the bill over to the Senate is just a formality.  Our socialist Governor said he is eager to sign it.  This bill will  put some people out of business, but it will make all of us pay more, including UBER, which has been a great money maker and money saver for many people.   CA is about to  fix that.

Shocker – Bolton Fired by Trump

by Jack

Another firing, what the heck is going on in the White House?  “President Trump announced Tuesday that John Bolton was no longer his national security adviser, saying in tweets that he “disagreed strongly with many of his suggestions” and that Bolton was no longer needed.

The two men offered differing accounts about whether Trump had forced Bolton out of the position or whether Bolton left voluntarily after repeated clashes with Trump.

“I informed John Bolton last night that his services are no longer needed at the White House,” Trump said on Twitter. “I asked John for his resignation, which was given to me this morning. I thank John very much for his service.”

Trump has had an astonishing number of people fired or pressured to resign from his inner circle.  This calls into question,  why have any advisors if you are going to ignore them or fire them every time they disagree with you?

However, the bigger question here is even more troubling, please read on until the end before you form an opinion.  That question surrounds  Trump’s mental health.   I keep falling back on, what is more important his  policy or his presentation?  I like his policies, mostly, but his presentations leave a lot to be desired and so do some of his snap decisions.

I worry that we’re seeing signs of a narcissistic personality disorder.   Apparently I am not alone either.  After doing some research I found that a number of healthcare professionals are similarly concerned, but they warn, non-professionals should not be too quick to judge.  This is a very complex area of psychiatry and even definition of NPD has been the subject of intense debate.

Psychology Today said, many psychiatrists are reluctant to say President Trump suffers from a personality disorder because of something called the Goldwater rule, they need him to be a client and they need an office visit, but even then they couldn’t go public.   However, the  DMS-5 (diagnostic reference book)  is quite clear what this disorder is, but that is still not enough for a credible diagnosis, so warn the professionals.

According to DSM-5, individuals with NPD have most (at least five) or all of the symptoms listed below (generally without commensurate qualities or accomplishments).

  1. Grandiosity with expectations of superior treatment by others.
  2. Fixated on fantasies of power, success, intelligence, attractiveness, etc.
  3. Self-perception of being unique, superior, and associated with high-status people and institutions.
  4. Needing constant admiration from others.
  5. Sense of entitlement to special treatment and to obedience from others.
  6. Exploitative of others to achieve personal gain.
  7. Unwilling to empathize with others’ feelings, wishes, or needs.
  8. Intensely jealous of others and the belief that others are equally jealous of them.
  9. Pompous and arrogant demeanor.

Now here’s the part where we (lay people) can get into trouble trying to diagnose this complex personality disorder:  Where do we separate persona from person?  The onest answer is, I don’t know, because I am not a mental health expert.   Sure, we can see how the above definition would fit Trump’s on-camera persona, but is it really Donald Trump the person?   In all fairness, that’s what we don’t know.

We (supporters) have been giving him a pass on his theatrics and tweets, thinking this is just Trump’s persona, but in private we’re all hoping he really isn’t like that as a person, because if he is, the man has serious issues!  But, we just don’t know do we?

Remember the old saying, “We are 3 people?”   We are who we think we are.  We are who others think we are.  And finally we are… who we really are!  There’s the catch and I wish I could give a definitive answer on who Trump really is, but we just can’t know with the limited information we have.  We can only watch him closely and be prepared to step up if things go really wrong.   Couple that big concern to facing a stampede of far left democrats determined to unseat Trump.  Well, lets just say this is not the way I want to enter an important election year!   God help us.

Trump’s Secret Meeting With the Taliban

by Jack

“President Donald Trump said Saturday that Taliban leaders were to travel to the US for secret peace talks this weekend but that the meeting has been canceled and he’s called off peace talks with the militant group entirely.

Trump tweeted that he scrapped the meeting after the Taliban took credit for an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan, that killed a dozen people, including an American soldier.

Inviting Taliban leaders onto American soil is an unprecedented move and a significant development in America’s longest running war just days from the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.”

Surely there must have been better places where they could have accomplished the same thing and yet not be so controversial?

What’s your opinion, am I wrong or was this okay to invite the Taliban to America right before 9/11?    I’ve heard a lot of anger expressed over this move, but I really want to hear what you think.

Improving Your Life – A Must Read for Seniors

by Jack

Lesson 1 – A healthy brain

Dementia is part of the aging process.  As we age our brains shrink; we become more forgetful and our cognitive functions are impaired to some degree.  However, the upside is, our brain is a very resilient organism and there are ways we can easily moderate our inevitable age-related decline.   Challenging your brain to learn new things is a start.  By just reading this article you are exercising your brain and that’s going to help you!

There are about 100 billion neurons (or nerve cells)in a single human brain (see left) and many more neuroglia (or glial cells) that control such things as memory, emotion, pain response, reasoning, etc., but we only use a small portion of them, the rest are an untapped resource. By both protecting your existing network (brain wiring) that you’ve created over the years and also opening up new neurosynapes pathways, we can fight the ravages of age and even enhance our brain’s cognitive functions.

Think of a brain neuron like a memory chip in a computer and in our brain/computer, a single neuron may be connected to up to 10,000 other neurons, passing signals to each other via as many as 1,000 trillion synaptic connections.   This is equivalent, by some estimates, to a computer with a 1 trillion bit per second processor. This is an astounding feat unmatched by our most advanced computers.   To take this one step further, our brains have approximately 3,333 times more synaptic connections than there are stars in our galaxy. Pretty amazing isn’t it?

To summarize, a neurotransmitter is a specialized messenger chemical that transfers or sends information from one type of cell to another. Now you get a rough idea why these connections and distribution centers are so important to healthy brain function. In the case of Alzheimer’s, science strongly believes our neurosynaptic connections are being interrupted by the formation of beta amyloid plaque. This plaque blocks the transfer of data which is most visible to us as…. severe memory loss and cognitive impairment.   (See left)

Researchers are focusing on the prevention of plaque more than the cure because the neurosynapes may be so badly damaged  after plaque forms, it could be irreversible.  So, it’s far more practical to focus on prevention than a cure at this stage of medicine.  Think of this as, snuffing out a match before the forest is set ablaze.

What you can do to help yourself:  Of course diet and exercise play a key role. Walking briskly as little as 40 minutes a day times a week can really help.  Doctors suggest you start off slowly, then increase your time by 5 minutes a week until you reach your goal.

Next, diet.  A diet of red, green, yellow and orange foods is a good start. Think “rainbow” when shopping for fresh foods.  For example, the color yellow is associated with vitamin A, essential to good health. It has been helpful in many ways, such as:

  • yellow color food groupVitamin A activities (e.g. improve vision health)
  • Free radical scavengers (prevent diseases, slow down the process of aging and degeneration of brain cells)
  • Protect/Prevent/Repair DNA damage (suppress tumors)
  • Immune booster (protect against common cold, destroys foreign micro-organisms like bacteria, viruses, parasites)

You don’t have to eat much fresh foods to get the maximum benefit, usually an ounce or two is sufficient.   What you can fit in the palm of your hand is often enough, then use this as component with other foods or a garnish on salad.

But, can’t taking a daily vitamin accomplish the same thing as eating fresh foods?  The verdict on taking a daily vitamin is still out, but what we do know for a fact is, taking some vitamin pills can be counter-productive.  For example, vitamin E, an essential vitamin and a fantastic antioxidant for fighting plaque, however when it’s taken in pill form this large single dose can block up to 7 other types of vitamin E found in fresh foods. You need all 8 types of vitamin E to get the best results.

Life-long learning: Brain wiring (function) can be improved by challenging yourself to learn new things, as I said at the beginning of this article.   But, what should I learn, you may wonder?  It doesn’t matter, just do it.  Take a sewing class, learn Italian, read more, do crossword puzzles, but engage your brain and do things that are challenging. The results can be nothing short of spectacular, depending of course on how much effort you are willing to put forth.  Just like anything else, the more you do, the better you get, right?

This short article is by no means all you need to make aging as trouble free as possible, but it’s a step in the right direction.  I hope it’s motivated you to do the rest on your own.   Good luck, now get going!

Shooting Hysteria – Sorting out the Facts

by Jack

Distracted driving is more likely to get you than a guy with an AR-15.   The following is an example of where we could greatly improve on public safety without compromising our civil liberties or confiscating firearms.  Each of these violations represents a far greater chance of death, injury and/or property loss than from the so-called assault rifle aka AR-15:

Talking on cell phones while driving

Texting while driving

Adjusting radio/climate controls while driving

From 2010-2014, driver’s who were distracted while driving caused nearly 4.5 million car crashes!!!!   Common sense says we should be fixing this stuff long before we worry about banning a rifle owned legally by millions of Americans.   Gun deaths get the headlines, but car crashes involve far more deaths, injuries and property loss.

ASSAULT WEAPONS FACTS -  Most gun experts will tell you that the term “assault rifle” refers to a very specific set of weapons:  Those that are fed ammunition from a detachable magazine, and can switch between semiautomatic and fully automatic fire, a capability known as “select fire.” By that narrow standard, the number of assault rifles in private hands is very small.

The National Firearms Act of 1934 required owners of fully automatic guns to register the weapons with the federal government. Since 1986, Congress has forbidden gunmakers from producing fully automatic weapons for the civilian market, leaving machine gun aficionados to collect older models, and then register them. According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, there are roughly 638,000 machine guns in circulation in the United States, a number that includes both assault rifles like the M16 and more novel products, like the Uzi submachine gun.  There have been no homicides caused by a legally owned machine gun in the last 75 years.

But most laws titled under “assault weapons” use a broader definition that some experts say is overly broad. For example, California, Washington, D.C., New York, and five other states have regulations that typically apply to any magazine-fed, semiautomatic rifle that incorporates other design features, but the accessories are mostly just for aesthetics, to evoke a “tactical” look, they do not make the rifle more lethal.

National Shooting Sports Foundation, the gun industry’s largest trade group. The NSSF does not use the term “assault rifle,” but tracks the production of “modern sporting rifles,” which typically refers to semiautomatic rifles like the AR-15.

  • According to a 2015 report by the trade group, roughly one in 10 guns produced each year is a modern sporting rifle. In raw numbers, American gunmakers produced and imported 8.5 million such rifles between 1990 and 2012, and about one and two million annually every year since. This works out to between 15 and 20 million so-called assault weapons aka modern sporting rifles now in circulation. (An important note: The NSSF report includes weapons produced for law enforcement.)
  • There were 5,738 homicides in 2017. The population of the United States in 2017 was 325.98 million.
  • The highest per capita homicides rates were in States with the strictest gun control laws. Do the math and you will find that assault weapons barely register on the radar, despite the millions that are in public control.

CONCLUSION: If we were to somehow remove all so-called [assault weapons] from the population, it would have no discernible statistical impact on homicides.  To push for such a ban is at best misguided and at worst, purely for political advantage.   We would save more lives by not texting while driving.
