In what I can only describe as being one of the most remarkable performances I have ever seen, two boys from the Catalunia Catholic Boy's choir sing the "Meow" song to classical music. You really must see this to believe it. After watching this video, I came away with a new found respect for the Catholic Boy's Choir. The official name of the choir is called "La Escolania", and they are associated with one of the oldest monasterys in Europe, the Monastery of Montserrat.

This monastery is the destination of some of the largest pilgrimages in all of Catholicism. Regardless of your personal feelings about the Catholic faith, you must admit that these boys have truly been blessed.  When I consider the talentless sounds coming from the radio in today's world, it is quite refreshing to hear these young boys present this classical song in such a professional. These boys not only deliver the song with amazing clarity and style, but they are also able to keep a straight face.  Truly makes one want to see them perform during their normal Sunday Mass. Incredible is all I can say, Bravo!

As great as these boys sound, it would seem that Europe's oldest and possibly finest boy's choir in the world, is finding it difficult to continue its old ways. The monastery that sits atop a steep limestone cliff some 25 miles northwest of Barcelona, is struggling to survive. A victim it would seem of its own traditions.

In today's world many parents are not so sure they want their 9 to 14 year old boys to be spending 11 months away from home as they have been required to do in the past. So one of the changes that they began in 2005 was to allow the boys to go home overnight and on weekends. They also lowered the age requirement to 8 years old, and then for the first time in its 800 year history they have allowed girls to join the choir also. Times are a changing ain't they?  Well if you like, you can read more about the boys choir in this article written by Branden Phillips at the NY Times web site.

When I get depressed, I always listen to this, it always brings a smile to my face and cheers me up. Those 2 young boys are so talented.

Thanks Ron,

This boys have truly been blessed, and I would love to one day sit in the audience and watch the choir perform.

If I remember correctly, this is a vocal exercise by Rossini. One cannot help smiling as they listen. Such lovely voices. I hope to see their performance at Montserrat one day.

i totally like the song "MEOW!" hahaha....me and my friends are laughing...by the way who's the kid sing that song??? cause they are really great...

Other than what I wrote in the article, I have no idea of who the boys are. But I agree he is good.

amazing, the dark hair boy is making the fun and the other boy is very serious, very wonderful!!!

I was looking for more work by the choir. Do they have any albums out or songs? I'd love to have them. Their voices are awesome.

Thanks

I believe there is some recordings of the choir, but how you would get them is beyond me. I would suggest a web search as your best avenue. I wish i could be of better help, but that is the best i can offer.

The boys certainly do sing beautifully.
I thought the funniest thing was the cat-calls-in-reply from the audience!

Wikipedia has this to say about the piece they sing:

While the piece is typically attributed to Gioachino Rossini, it was not actually written by him, but is instead a compilation written in 1825 that draws principally on his 1816 opera, Otello. The compiler was likely the English composer Robert Lucas de Pearsall, who for this purpose used the pseudonym "G. Berthold".

I've confirmed that Grove Online (http://www.oxfordmusiconline.com/subscriber/article_works/grove/music/23901pg8#S23901.9.10) lists it as "spurious".

I love these Boys, their Director, and the Music.
I would like to have a A CD of the Meow song
And other pieces by the boys Chior @ Catalunia
Spain . Would Be a Good fund raiser for the school.

I like your suggestion. I think a CD of their music would be a great fundraiser for them.

About Me: I am a born again Christian who enjoys talking religion and politics. I have always believed that it is the Christian's obligation to understand the workings of our government as well as they do the precepts of God. Jesus tells us to be "wise as serpents and harmless as doves". (Mark 10:16) So it is with this understanding that I approach life. I was born in the Midwest, and while I may have grown up in Northern Minnesota, I have earned my degree in knowledge and understanding from the many regions of America and Europe that I have either lived in or visited as an adult.
