Now this is a whale of a tale that has left a woman with crippled yacht in South Africa. While sailing off South Africa's picturesque southwestern coast, she was surprised by a 33 foot Southern Right Whale that soared out of the water and landed upon her boat. Paloma Werner said Wednesday the whale breached just feet (meters) from their boat in Cape Town's waters on Sunday. When the whale jumped out of the water and whacked her yacht, it snapped the mast in two.
A local newspaper showed a photo that was taken by a passenger on a nearby boat. Thanks to them, Paloma Werner will have proof that her story of how her yacht was damaged, will not just be thought of as just another whale of a story by the insurance company. Neither Werner nor her companion were hurt, and a few moments after the collision they saw the whale swimming away. The two yachters can thank God the mast took the brunt of the blow.
Being the Winter Months in the Southern Hemisphere, the sea around that part of the world is usually teeming with whales and great white sharks. Many boaters from Cape Town and surrounding areas will sail out to enjoy some whale watching. On this day it seems like the couple of this yacht were given a closer look at a whale then they had expected.
